These people, and the people who support them are unwittingly destroying the reputation of the blacks. The media loves showing minority empowerment like a monkey loves its crack.

The media is run by a bunch of feminists who sympathize with the blacks because of their similar 'struggle' for equality throughout history. What they don't realize is that the human race cannot be equal. We need leaders... Now, this may anger about 90% of you, but the truth must be spoken and defended. The white male is better suited for leadership in this world, deal with it!

Empowerment has always been a promotion of laziness.

It is sad to see that the US which is the most industrious and intelligent country on the planet has succumbed to such things. The US has been forged through hard work and not through free lunch.

Man are all you people overreacting!

As an analogy, think about bopping someone in the nose. Of course that is a bad thing. On the other hand, if that someone was being aggressive towards you, bopping them on the nose might be just the right thing to do.

Segregation and racism is bad - no doubt. But, if you have been the subject of it for years and years, such as blacks have been in the US, then might a little of the same not be a legitimate counter measure? Fire can b e destructive, but fighting fire with fire is a common practice.

These people are attempting to right a long standing wrong:

"We have the real power to do something, to use the money we spend every day to solve our problems," Maggie Anderson said
They are trying to do something constructive -- good for them!

Its not the same as a racial group that is in a majority position using that racial difference as a clout against the minority. This is a minority attempting to use some self empowerment to overcome a prejudice that has been exercised against them for so long.

That they seek to help their own racial minority is in no way a threat to the comfortable racial majority. Get a grip already.

I agree. I think it is a GREAT idea and hope it catches on! It would be wonderful if blacks decided to only patronize black businesses. They can develop their own shopping malls, their own grocery stores, etc....

I support this movement 100% and hope it catches on in my area very very soon! In fact I would hope the government would support this "affirmative action" program and encourage malls of this sort with tax breaks or other affirmative action incentives.

MLK was talking about a color blind society. Focusing on our differences only further divides us. People are people why is this so hard to understand?

This couple would better serve themselves and their community if they would just "Buy Local" rather than exclusively "buy Black".

I make every effort to patronize my local shops whenever possible. Sometimes, I pay a little more but it is worth it. Unfortunately, restaurants, pubs, law and medical offices are about the only thing left in town.

The image of the classic downtown is disappearing at an alarming rate all across the nation. Vintage vacant storefronts now litter most old downtown areas. I long for a time when I could just walk downtown to pick up everything that I need. Above all, I miss my old Hardware Store. The sounds and images of creaky wooden floors and shelves stuffed to the ceiling are imprinted in my childhood memories. The owner hung an old bison head over the wooden cash register and you could still buy bulk hardware stored in wooden bins by the pound. I really miss that. Now, I am stuck with Lowe's and Home Depot.

It is no longer supporting your community if you have to drive 14 MILES to the nearest "black owned" grocery store. That becomes a point of contention towards racism albeit reverse racism. If it were for minority owned purposes only, then go to a woman owned store, go to a Pakistani owned store, go to an American Indian owned store - all of these are considered MINORITY OWNED BUSINESSES.

So yes the couple is practicing segration and reverse racism by the very definition of the word.

Wikipedia

Although the term 'racism' usually denotes race-based prejudice, violence, discrimination, or oppression, the term can also have varying and hotly contested definitions. Racialism is a related term, sometimes intended to avoid these negative meanings. According to the Oxford English Dictionary, racism is a belief or ideology that all members of each racial group possess characteristics or abilities specific to that race, especially to distinguish it as being either superior or inferior to another racial group or racial groups. The Merriam-Webster's Dictionary defines racism as a belief that race is the primary determinant of human traits and capacities and that racial differences produce an inherent superiority of a particular racial group, and that it is also the prejudice based on such a belief. The Macquarie Dictionary defines racism as: "the belief that human races have distinctive characteristics which determine their respective cultures, usually involving the idea that one's own race is superior and has the right to rule or dominate others."

Note the following from the above:

"According to the Oxford English Dictionary, racism is a belief or ideology that all members of each racial group possess characteristics or abilities specific to that race, especially to distinguish it as being either superior or inferior to another racial group or racial groups. "

If this were taken into context with the article, then it would seem to suggest either they believe that black minority is either superior or inferior to OTHER minority owned.

So, again it is a blatant show of racism. If it were supporting minority owned businesses, then it would not be about white/black. It would be about being a minority - which the last time I checked - is more than the black population.

Why is that the "black community" is the only community that needs "empowering"?

Every "race" has suffered atrocities at the hands of another. What about the Chinese building the rail roads? Those immigrant workers surely went through hell. What about the Jews? Having been persecuted through history?

I am sorry to say this (well I am not) but this "empowerment" crap really annoys me. It is time to grow up. Yes, what happened was bad, but get over it, the rest of the world has gotten over the atrocities that their antecedents suffered in history.

Martin Luther King did not dream this. So why did the "black community" ever bother supporting him if they decided that his dream was a waste and that segregation was the way forward?

This is the motivation for the "stick together" mentality...

"I believe in the brotherhood of man, all men, but I don't believe in brotherhood with anybody who doesn't want brotherhood with me. I believe in treating people right, but I'm not going to waste my time trying to treat somebody right who doesn't know how to return the treatment." - Malcolm X

If black people decided to buy only from whites, in an effort to support the poorer white communities, why would this be bad?

I agree that it shouldn't be "us and them," but calling this racist is hyperbolic. It's not racist to help a demographic that needs the help.

Ok, here is where your logic is flawed. No one should need our assistance in keeping their store open no matter theirrace. If they have a superior product or customer service and good business logic, then it will survive. If they don't, I would rather spend my money at a company that does have superior product or customer service and good business logic so that that tax revenue can be utilized for the community.

Also, to reiterate again... if it were for minority owned stores only - then they should be going to woman owned, American Indian owned, Pakastani Owned, Asian Owned, Mexican Owned, etc... (get the drift).

So by default their very effort to shop only back is being exclusive of all the "other" minority.

If you are stupid and white I do not want to assist your business. If you are black and stupid - still do not want to assist in your business. If you are whatever minority race - I STILL DO NOT WANT TO ASSIST IN YOUR BUSINESS.

That is called equality. If you have a superior product I could care less what the color of your skin is. You are promoting racism and stupidity NOT equality.

You want equality? Owning a business is a risk. If it fails there are many factors to that and the least of those is the race of the owner. It is more likely the business sense, money management, location, customer service, product quality/quantity, etc.

If a white person goes into a business with the same knowledge as a black man going into that same type business- why should the black man get a handout or favoritism over the white man? He shouldn't - it should be about customer service and product.

Edit for spelling correction.

I know that sarcasm is a lost art on the internet, and I certainly hope your entire post was sarcasm. Assuming it was, well done!

There is no such thing as the "black community" any more than there is a "white community". By implying that there is a black community you're advocating segregation.

Folks, we all belong to one community: the American one. If we start shunning local businesses because they are run by people with different skin colors than us, how is that not racist?

If I walked into a restaurant, and saw that it was run by a black family, or an Asian family, or a latino family, and I refused to eat there because they weren't white, everyone would call me a racist. Black people who fought so hard for equality shouldn't be looking for any opportunity to throw it away. The woman in the article says she is suffering because of her decisions. Why would you suffer to exclude whites and other groups' businesses from your life?

It's new-age racism, and as long as black people do it, its A-OK.

I 100% agree with you...

The problem I have with this article at all is that for some reason, its news. Why is that? I live in the Dallas area and I get around the metroplex often. My experience, it is largely that way anyhow. Asians predominately go to Asian owned businesses. Indians to Indian stores. Hispanics to Hispanic shops, and so on. No one seems to feel the need to jump up and make some sort of article about it. Like someone in this thread already mentioned, is it because of the website mentioned at the bottom? Notice, on their website there is a spot where you can go and "DONATE" to the cause.

Heh, these guys are trying to sucker anyone out there to just give them money! All for the cause, of course.

Pretty ballsy, play the race card and ask for money while you do it.

Wow, see you have given PROOF that idiocy is known in all races and both sexes. What a blatantly sexist remark.

Feminists WISH they were the media owners!! Can you prove that one major newspaper is owned by a woman? WHEN you can give that information on which newspapers are owned by feminists (i.e. - women), then by all means - show us the conspiracy. I can find a few minority hispanic newspapers but not NBC, CNN, FOX, etc...

Where's your proof, brudda?

Today I have noticed that a Many of the Black People Actually LIKE being called Niggers, etc.. They LOVE Racism.. Why?

Without Racism they would have to face the truth, and actually realize that everyone has to live in the REAL WORLD, and to be EQUAL means that we all take Sh*t sometimes, and so far all I hear is that Blacks have been mis-treated....

It doesn't matter if there were White/Asian/Mexican/Arab, etc.. slaves, and slave children who got F*cked, and beaten - oh! no - everyone except the blacks had it all good.... Oh! the poor blacks...hmmmm

So today's year is 2122, and still with all the technology the blacks are mis-treated...

Year 8990 - Oh! my - we are still being racist toward the blacks, even tho they now have all the political seats, etc... oh! wait except one...

Year 22345 - There is one WHITE man on earth - He says, and I quote "Don't whip me oh! Black Master, for I have been a good slave" - Oh! my this one WHITE man is a racist because He called His Master Black...

Anywhoo - according to the Many Blacks today - in History there were NO white slaves, even white children slaves in the world, and everyone lived a happy life by just happily beating, and whipping, and molesting the black folks day in, and day out....

.........................

Now for anyone suggesting - I put MANY in there because NOT EVERY black does these things, and understands the struggles of life, etc..., and of these, they do NOT call RACISM on every lil comment, etc.. made... IE: These other blacks, etc.. know that life is life, and what went on in the early days is NOT the fault of the modern whites, etc... Heck I feel sad for the holocaust folks, but I was NOT even born then - so I couldn't of done anything...
....

In other words - to these MANY other blacks - life is life, and would actually agree, and fight for TRUTH, and JUSTICE in the end than use the racism card for every word that they didn't like made toward them, etc...

Your not African American, and all those hyphenated names, you pay the same taxes us white people pay.

Being from the UK this has always humoured and puzzled me, Irish-Americans being the worst of all with their skewed (and untruthful) perceptions of Ireland, St. Patrick's day and hypocrisy when it comes to terrorism (only Muslims can be, you know - the IRA are freedom fighters)! "I'm oirish" they'd have you believe, but after 100+ years of living there you most certainly are not - you are an American, plain and simple.

As for the couple in question, segregation is never a good thing. It only brings mistrust and hate.

You guys on here have no idea what you are talking about because you have not been in their shoes or can relate to anything they are talking about. If this country was free and equal like it was suppose to be then this would not even be talked about but the point is when there was forced segregation then there was not choice but for blacks to stick together and have their own things like stores and things but once segregation ended blacks went from being owners to consumers. Instead of one certain area which blacks owned stores and things to spend money in their area everyone spread out and started going to and buying other items from other people. It is not a point of being racist but the truth is in this country almost all the weath go to one set of people that stole this land from one set of people and killed them off then enslaved another set of people and that whole time once the weath was made and passed down from generation to generation none of the wealth was ever passed on to people that really owned this land or worked for free as slaves. So by people now trying to stick together to spend their money by people like themselves how is that wrong. I could care less if you guys wanted to stick together and spend your money on white owned stores because blacks and other races always support white owned places but when is the last time you have gone to a place that is black owned and you know it and spent your money?

So this couple lives in a white area? If they care so much about their own why dont they move into the black area? Sounds like they are having a little "white guilt" reverse feelings. Its worse though, its black guilt on people that have forgotten their race/ guilt based white wanna be living with the white man has done made them forget where they came from/guilt in limbo/not really white and not really black yet has black skin/racial uncertainty guilt.

Sounds as well like this effort is to get blacks with money to come spend it in the black areas. Putting a little guilt trip on their brothers?

Anyway for me this is economic/black on black/racial identity reverse racism/class based race guilt reverse guilt tripping.
