I don't really know the back story on this (if, indeed, there is one beyond pure art) but somebody has created an imaginary currency called the "Lunar" supposedly from the "Moon Republic." Pretty cool artwork, check it out:

cripes! try google image search for moon money, moon currency, or moon republic.
