Maybe he didn't want to live in a world where the powers that be decide what you smoke or ingest so he would rather be dead than to live as a slave under the jackboots of the king's law.
I'm surprised this doesn't happen more often, though it will probably in the future.
Napier gunman dead, siege over
The man at the centre of the Napier siege has been found dead inside a bedroom of his Chaucer Road property.
Police located his body in the master bedroom, one of several rooms they had been unable to view or have access to until around midday today.
Police are unable to say how the man died.
Superintendent Sam Hoyle, Eastern District Commander, said the house is still considered dangerous and has to be cleared by specialist staff. This could take some time.
No further details are available at this stage.
Cordons remain in place but they will be reviewed during the afternoon.
A media conference will be held at the Eastern Police District HQ, corner of Vautier and Dalton Streets at 2pm today.

It's true. Kiwis and Aussies have flung sheep jokes across the ditch at each other since the beginning of time, although we kiwis also throw prison colony jokes as well.

That's our stupid bloody policies for you. There have been numerous cop deaths just this year, it's just insane. If they carried guns, they wouldn't be getting shot so much.
Do you honestly think cops carrying guns will reduce gun shootings? I know if I was a cop I'd like the security, but I think it's unlikely that it will reduce cop shootings. If anything, I think it will increase the likelihood of getting shot. Serious criminals will arm themselves appropriately if they know any cop will be armed themselves. Also, a person with a gun is going to feel much more threatened when confronted by an armed police officer, making them less able to use rational thought, and more likely to make a bad decision (shooting at the officer).
I'm not saying that cops shouldn't be armed, I just don't think it would reduce cop shootings, but could in fact, have undesired consequences.
I'd also like to point out that I agree with milesp and LoneGunMan that legalization would be a logical solution to the needless expenses in cannabis operations, drug busts and court costs when there are much bigger fish to fry. ie the P epidemic and alchol related violence.

If I needed help, the police would be the last people I called. Now, if I needed someone to make criminals of the poor/infringe rights/bring undue violence to a situation I know just who to call......
Shoot E.M.S. workers? How did that come into the equation?
Hmmm, sounds like cop logic. What's that smell???
