Pirates fire at U.S. Navy ship off Somalia

wire.antiwar.com

MANAMA, May 7 (Reuters) - Pirates have fired small arms weapons at a U.S. Navy supply ship off the coast of Eastern Somalia, the first attack of this kind since last year's surge in pirate attacks, the U.S. Navy said on Thursday.

The USNS Lewis and Clark was chased for about an hour on Wednesday morning by two pirates skiffs, but neither came closer than about one nautical mile to the U.S. vessel, the U.S. Navy's Fifth Fleet said in a statement.

Small arms fire against US Navy?
What a joke... - these "pirates" seems to have no brains in their actions.

Maybe this was the long waited revenge?

I hope no country gets an idea to supply any missiles to these guys, who seems to not respect their lifes at all... I mean - look at the talibans now - who gave SAMs to them in past?

Did we seriously just let them shoot at us and we ran away?!?!

What a perfect time to engage/detain everyone on those boats and parade it on international tv to show the rest of them, their fun is over!

But instead we run away while they shoot at us...

Do you think that would have happened anywhere else in the world?

Do you think another country would have stood their ground, and of all war loving countries, WHY DID THE USA RUN AWAY FROM A FIGHT!

You've got a group of former fisherman. Do you really expect them to be the brightest bulbs in the pack?

USNS Lewis and Clark

Is this ship even armed? If not I can understand their actions, but if they are armed they should have completely obliterated these guys...

They should have called in the Super Hornets and been done with it...

That's a cargo ship.

They are known to have a disproportionate amount of female sailors as apposed to other types of vessels. Still they should have at least come about and ran them over.

With all respect, because we had a good discussion yesterday.

You have got to be kidding. As much antiwar posts as you have made on this site and now you pick at the military for not killing them. What is it that you want exactly? It seems like you are not so much antiwar as you are anti USA.

Really I guess I am respectfully asking where do you stand?

Do you Run Away from a gnat, when you keep walking and leave it behind?

The U.S Ship maintained it's course.

They simply had no interest in an unnecessary confrontation.

The gunfire fell a mile short of the ship.

By the time they can contact DC and get the president who might be out strolling with his wife and get permission to fire on the pirates, the pirates are gone. Its that simple!!

Because if they had opened fire and obliterated the pirates, it would have then been "Oh, the poor pirates! They're just poor, misguided souls!"

Now we're pansies for leaving them alone.

Can we win? Seems not.

Anti war and anti pirates, anything wrong?

The war is not justified and so many innocent civilians were killed.

And I thought that only happens in space combat simulation games... The ship must've been armed somewhat...
