Was wondering when most of the people that are on ATS first started using the internet. By using I mean at least 2 hours or so daily.

I started using the internet daily back in 1998.

I started using the internet on an almost daily basis in 1996. I've had a computer in my house since the 80's. I had my own Atari in elementary school.

I finally got on the internet about 3 or 4 months ago. This is a very narcotic place. Maybe I only think so because I now live in the mountains with nohwere to go, and nothing else to do, but I dare guess that if I was in the city again I'd still be here typing.

1994 - using the newsgroups...
If I did it from home it would be $15 per hour on 2600bps. Luckily I didn't have to I had it free

1994 when Mindspring got underway. But, I had been using dialup BBSs for years before that, and Compuserve even earlier. My first modem was a 300bps acoustic coupler. Rockin'!

Woow 1994, I don't think I knew that something like this excisted back then, lol.

I think I started knowing about the Internet about 1996 using it in my public library.

I've been using the internet for about 6 years now, but it seems wayyyyy longer than that. Right???

'87-ish thereabouts.
Early early days of what we take for granted now, basically a community dialup BBS.
Cleveland FreeNet was, some believe, the first means for the general public to access the internet.
This then-11-year-old computer geekette was one of the first people to sign up. Just look where it got me.

First contact was in 1994 at friend's house. I got serious with the Net my freshman year of college in 1995. Ah, the good old days of Netscape and Mosaic on Solaris-based SunSparcs. Mmmm, we had a fat T3 pipe even back then (upgraded to OC3 a few years later). Been hooked ever since.

Compuserve and prodigy didn't have access to the net back then (1990) so I guess I started with true internet access via AOL probably in 1994 or so. I could try to dig up credit card bills to be more exact. I remember those days. Argh. It was a big deal when you figured out how to use PPP over an AOL connection to circumvent their software and use your own tools. I was a cable modem pioneer in Tampa for roadrunner in 1998 and have been a customer ever since.

Anyone remember the big deal it was to have the newest PPI or USR modems when they came out? 1200 to 2400 to 9600 to finally 14400?

I first logged on around '92 or '93. Compuserve on my then impressive Mac Lc475! (still have it somewhere here)

It was too expensive then. AOL and Compuserve used to charge by the minute! So I only used to use it for short periods.

Did you play any of the online games? IE RPG, where YOU wrote the story with all the other members of the BBS? We had some really awesome stories. It was amazing how you could get people all to adopt a main theme and interact BETTER than they do in real life when writing a story.
Rember how excited you got when a sysop dropped you in to chat? Good times!!! ---Not saying ATS isn't just a different time and world back then.
