From what I understand is a more modern commune, instead of living like the Amish basically, is where you have your own community, but it is not necessarily appliance free or there is no one interacting with the outside. It is still kinda like a neighborhood. The difference being is that there is a commitment from everyone living there to help each other, live together.
You have the people who work who can buy the stoves, but all the people who don't work get together and prepare a meal for everyone to eat together.
That is the best way to describe it. They all take turns babysitting. They all work in teh gardens. Houses are open to everyone to come and go.

I think what it basically boils down to is village life.

I lived in a commune as a child, and I visited or spent time in several other communes in the hippy period of the 60's and early 70's. In the 80's I gravitated more to the cults, but it was just about the same.

I entered this thread with some trepidation, but ask anything.
Pose a specific question and I'll answer it from personal experience.

But I guess the question would be kinda how far would you go to shield them from outside pressures??? Would they inevitably be influenced by the materialistic lifestyle that they would encounter away from the commune ???

Heya! Scarlett's back from a manic weekend!

Aanywhoo, you talk about sheltering the kids from the outside? I dunno, would you? Like why not just show pros n cons?

It;s like, you got this gorgeous life of freedom n simple pleasures where you're soooo happy, and then out there is a life of rat racing dollar chasing!

What would you choose? Easy really!

Hey Scarlett

Wow, manic weekend sounds cool !!
I've kinda been ill, think it was an allergic reaction to all the # they put in stuff.....Aaaaaargh !!!

Lot to be said for organic produce, makes that commune sound VERY inviting at the mo !!

And yeah, children are influenced by what they're taught.....you're right babes, no contest really between happiness in a loving, hippy environment, compared to the dog-eat-dog world that awaits outside !!

peace n love xx

Hey there baby

Ok---was living in the 60s the dream we envisage it to have been ???

Aaaaaw hon you've been ill? Sure hope you're alive n kicking again!

Yes yes yes to organics! Oooh, we've just started sellin like soaps, balms perfumes n things all made of good natural stuff!

Beeswax and essential oils are heavenly...

I so want to learn how to do that! Wow, I could start a lil company off it!

Oh, back to the kiddies again, how kinda strange would it be to live this everyday life if commune life was your normality? Growing up with that frame of mind must be soo interesting!

Peace n loadsa love right back at ya hon! xx
