ScienceDaily (May 2, 2009) — A team of genetics experts in Southampton is working against the clock to produce the world's first DNA test for the Mexican strain of swine flu. University of Southampton spin-out company PrimerDesign specialises in producing high-tech DNA detection kits. The technology detects results faster and more accurately than traditional diagnosis techniques. The company was founded by University of Southampton scientists and is part of the University's SETsquared Business Incubation programme. Staff at the PrimerDesign laboratories realised they were ideally positioned to create the first DNA swine flu test when the US Centre for Disease Control published the genetic data for the killer virus this week. Coordinator of the swine flu DNA project, Dr Rob Powell said, "With the release of the unique genetic code for this dangerous virus strain we're able to develop the ultimate diagnosis tool within the next few days. "At PrimerDesign we're able to produce synthetic DNA that matches the virus exactly, without ever having to come into contact with the flu itself. The test can identify the presence of swine flu within two hours." The high-tech production methods of the kits mean that the Southampton team could very quickly produce enough test kits for hospitals across Europe if needed. The kits will be fully developed and ready to go within two weeks. PrimerDesign Ltd already produces genetic detection kits for numerous other viruses and conditions; it is possible that this could be the first DNA diagnosis for the Mexican swine flu anywhere in the world.

I'm not sure if anyone else is concerned about this. While I'm glad they can develop a test this quickly...I guess I'm worried about false positives. What do you guys think?

hmmmm and would this test show the owner of the kit the results or would they have to send the kit somewhere else?
If you have to send it somewhere else, is it the governments way of collecting your DNA for other purposes???

I think its very good news, i just read an article about how CDC can not handle the testing, they can only do 100 tests per day in their lab. This way more poeople can be tested but the question is how. Will they force a test on everyone or will people be able to do the test at home, if so, can we trust people that they report in if the test is positive ? Lots of questions and problems arise.

These are the same questions I had...with a test like this martial law would almost be mandatory. And I doubt they would let you leave your home without first submitting for a test.

"And that no man might buy or sell, save he that had the mark, or the name of the beast, or the number of his name."

Below is a PDF concerning the test. According to the document it appears to have a 95% accuracy. Also for the conspiracy theorists please note the company logo.

Oh yeah, you didn't completely blow this out of proportion.

Now a flu kit is the mark of the beast?

Thank God (Seriously). Sorry about my reaction.. I just see so many over blown prophecy interpretations on ATS.. That I over re-act.. A lot.

On topic the kits would make an easy time if they did try to quarantine some areas.

What do you mean when you say the logo? i've looked at it a few times and I can't make it out.

I don't disagree with you, i'd just like to see what you can see.
