Thanks Mercenary The basement would be good if it was something like a tornado. I tend to think worse case scenario when I hear things like that,
like an air raid or nuclear attack. As far as finding out what my town does to alert the people who lives here, I would have to find a website that
goes into detail about that. Any idea on where I would find that? Maybe on the city website? I'm going to check that now..

They will be able to help you. good luck!

It was probably a tornado system test.
If it was sunny out and the siren went off then they are just testing. If it is rainy out then you might have a problem.
Just because a siren sounds doesn't mean that a tornado is on top of you. It means that a tornado was spotted in your County. So depending where it
was spotted at, you probably have a good 15 minutes to get yourself together.
I'm in Kansas and we have 2 sirens. The first is a regular siren that lets you know one is in our County. Depending on the sky, that warning usually
lets us know to turn on our local channels. The other is a voice alarm that says "This is a Tornado Warning, take shelter immediatley". When the
second goes off then we know it is time to get in the ground.

I just found this article from 2007. It says that most of Wilkes Barre doesn't have an air siren, but they were looking into making a county wide
alert.. Weird. I have to find out if they ever did this and if not, if the siren is near my house..

No, that was an unmistakable noise.. I am home alone, but there was no way to confuse that with anything else. It was long, loud, and had a faint echo
to it. It sounded like what you would hear in a war movie, just a lot louder and deeper.

What time was it "broadcast"? Day or Night?
Any inclement weather in the area?
In my community they "test" the sirens on the 1st of the month at 12 noon...
Just a thought...

Well, if there ever is a need to go somewhere for shelter, then buildings designated as fallout shelters are good places to go. Pay close attention to
the public buildings you go to. I don't know what other places might be shelters, but our local library has the fallout shelter icon on the door, and
on the front of the building. Anyone know what other buildings are common for fallout shelters?

Heck when we would hear those go off in Central Texas years ago that was like an alert to tell the tornado chasers to get in their pick-ups. By
tornado chasers I mean tree cutters looking for some fallen trees to make a buck off of cutting up and getting off of someone's lawn or roof.
Those sirens would be their call to work.

Are you sure that is an Air Raid Siren, it sounds more like a Notification Siren used in a plant, mill, or a mine. An Air Raid siren is pretty darn
distinct, a very eerie wailing sound, and you will not forget once you hear one go off. I have only ever heard one once, and I will never forget what
it sounded like, especially considering that when it went off, I was nowhere near any kind of safe cover. You immediately feel pretty darn helpless in
that situation, I am sure that is the same way that the OP felt.
