The final Level, Level 6 is characterist of another community in another

country reaching Human to Human spread. At this stage , Level 5 , the jump to

Level 6 is usually a formallity of time.

what happens during level 6

It depends on where you live

there are 4 reported cases where I live , atm

so Level 6 to me means ...Holiday

If I am lucky, finals will be postponed =)

I haven't heard of any cases in my area though. I'm not too worried right now.

I'm sure a college student looks at this as a vacation. Others of us, though, have families, kids. We won't be partying "extra hard" because finals are postponed.

If you want to be realistic, finals could be postponed FOREVER.

At level 5, quarantines are authorized. The wheels are already in motion, and the HHS press conference this afternoon confirmed it. Maybe you caught it in between bong hits and "studying"... If not, here's a blurb for you...

I was told today that a child in my kids school and their entire family have "flu-like" symptoms and are awaiting test results. If it's positive, the school will be required to close. It hasn't made the news yet, but will likely be announced tomorrow.

There are 100 schools closed now, I suspect the number will be 500 before next Monday.

My concerns are not with the actual illness, but the economic impact of business and government closures. This will guarantee a stop of all international travel, closing borders and isolating nations.

Panic is a disaster in itself.

If you read the meaning of the phases . . .

Phase 1: No animal influenza viruses circulating among animals have been reported to cause infection in animals.

Phase 2: An animal influenza virus circulating in domesticated or wild animals is known to have caused infection in humans and is therefore considered a specific potential pandemic threat.

Phase 3: An animal or human-animal influenza virus has caused sporadic cases or small clusters of disease in people, but has not resulted in human-to-human transmission sufficient to sustain community-level outbreaks.

During the first three phases, the WHO advises countries to “prepare the health system to scale up”.

Phase 4: Human-to-human transmission of an animal or human-animal influenza virus able to sustain community-level outbreaks has been verified. Countries are advised to “activate contingency plans”.

Phase 5: The same identified virus has caused sustained community-level outbreaks in two or more countries in one WHO region. A pandemic is officially under way.

Phase 6: In addition to the criteria defined in Phase 5, the same virus has caused sustained community level outbreaks in at least one other country in another WHO region.

During phases five and six, countries are advised to “implement contingency plans for health systems at all levels”.

. . . you see that there is not much difference between Phase 5 and Phase 6. Morever, the recommendations for both top phases are broadly worded and it's up to each country to consider what kind of contigency plans to put in effect.
