I understand that many of you are very concerned over this disease thats flooding the news as of late... But maybe some of us are buying into the hype too quickly?

The board has come to resemble a spooked flock with all the running about screaming "Oh em GEEZ!! We're all gonna get the pig disease and DIE!!"

Yes it's scary. But theres no need for such excessive concern... Remember SARS, anthrax, the avian flu, etc? We all freaked out then, and while this time it seems a little closer to home for some, others have been in the same situation and those countries havent fallen down dead yet.

If you're gonna get it, you'll get it. At that point, it doesn't matter if it came from Mexico, Obama, or space, or if its manmade or a biowarfare op, or whatever. A new thread about the swine flu seems to be popping up every ten minutes, half of which are basically saying the same exact things! I know theres been some effort on the moderator's end to clean some of this up by adding a swine flu section for threads, but we, the members posting an infinite mess of swineflu scare threads, have to do our part as well and allow other threads about different topics to gain some footing.

For example, the recent posts page, which is a useful way to stay up to speed on the latest discussions on a variety of subjects, is right now nearly 75% saturated with swine flu threads. Is that the only thing happening in the world right now!?

There are many worthy issues out there that deserve as much or more of our attention!

If you have something relevent to say about the swine flu, must you make a new thread about it every time?

I realize I can view threads by topic and what not, but why should I or anyone have to change established forum-browsing habits merely because people are freaking out about a disease that hasnt had a fatal case in the US yet?

Enough with the swine flu! What about the recent meningitis outbreak in Miami?

It's called collective panic, and it's great for a media cycle that was coming down from a high off the back of the financial crisis.

So, now we have pig flu to worry about instead. And you're right, don't agree so much with the title and this thread will probably be culled, but everyone needs to calm down.

After all, it's just a bunch of germs. Germs! The world's already overpopulated, and if it does turn pandemic, it's just nature evening the numbers out a bit.

That's the key thing - it's not *even* a pandemic yet, however, if one or two people are taken into quarantine, as a precaution, it's lauded as a new "outbreak".

Maybe I should change the thread title if someone complains. Its kinda eye catching at least lol though may be a bit misleading... I don't think we should kill all the pigs in the world or anything! Not the animal kind anyway.......

One problem with that, this strain of the flu while its named swine flu, shows signs of being able to spread two types of birds as well as us. So killing the pigs creates a glut of pork followed by a dearth of pork without really slowing this stuff down.

I heard on here, not once case of H1N1 was found in a pig.... Interesting.

Of course not, because it's a mutated virus and it's part pig, part bird, and part human.

okay.... I'm guessing you didnt read my original post but obviously a change of the title is in order...

CRAP!! hadnt heard about that... something else to stress over!! Thats what americans LIVE FOR!!!!

Very true, though the population culling part scares me a bit... I know theres a crap-ton of us and the world's resources are running thin, but I think the problem is a combination of irresponsibility, ignorance, and greed on the part of our ancestors (and us admittedly, though we are more aware of it now.) This planet has more than enough resources for the lot of us. That does not mean socialism is the answer however. It would require self discipline on a level unnachievable by lower lifeforms such as we are...

But it bothers me how people are jumping overboard from the sound of the alarm, regardless of there being a fire or not

Hm... perhaps but creating a disease merely to use it as a diversionary tool seems a bit much dont you think? I don't discount the possibilty of it being man-made but I think there would have to be a more tangible reason than distraction. They can do that without any real threat simply thru media manipulation.

Ok (poster below), but admit it, the amount of swine flu threads are too many. Every new thread has some twist but it is basically the same message, pandemic, panic, who did it, where did it start and some threads pushing for webstores selling biosuits, surgical masks and gasmasks.

Cheers

Reported for trolling, I would ask anyone else taking this pandemic seriously to please report this person for trolling. Swine flu isnt the end of the world but its basically on its own board, if you dont want to read it look at another board you are clearly here looking for an arguement. And I take great offense to that seeing how a family member of mine could die from this pandemic.

an interesting angle, for me, is that despite the media hysteria attached to this flu outbreak it isn't all that serious at this point, relatively speaking.

the media is creating panic about this disease, it created panic about SARS, avian flu and anthrax to, could we be getting conditioned to take the attitude that "if we get it, we get it" when the big one eventually does hit?

i don't know if this is on topic or not, exactly, but it strikes me that this thread pretty much sums up the point in producing these scary "we're all gonna die, it's a new plague" stories.

if the conspiracy theory nuts are sick of the hype the straight public don't care a jot.

I didn't get SARS, bird flu, TB, VD, HIV, or A-I-D so I will just keep on doing what I am doing in regards to the swine flu.

I will continue to wash my hands like I always do anyway.

I will cover my mouth with my arm (not my hand) like I always do.

And I will go off on people when they cough on me (like I usually do).

I live in Houston. My biggest concern this morning is the 8 inches of rain we got in the last few hours.

The media has been begging for a European black plague type thing for years. This is NOT going to be it.

There are a few billion people on earth and only a nano fraction of them have died by this. Likely, their health care is near level zero.

And only a few thousand have been diagnosed (but I can't verify that so it may be higher).

I have not heard of any swines being killed because they had swine flu.

I did have a minor flu last week and what ever type it was, it passed like all the flues previous. I obviously did not die.

I didn't go to the doctor or take a single medication for it. It just ran it's course and went away.

But if you want to wear a mask, tape your windows and doors, and lock yourself inside until who knows when, knock yourself out.

Just remember, when you get fired, the job market is very tough right now.

PEACE!

My simple opinion. It has killed 80 (or about that) in Mexico, of which most have a terrible diet, and very little medicine available for the poor. I know americans eat like crap, but they get lots of it (for the most part) and their bodies can fight it.

I think I have heard of 14 cases so far in the United States. If this was the horrible ailment most of you have been crying about, there would be countless cases already. My freaking boss (a certified genius) was dwelling on the fact that he has congestion and his daughter threw up the night before. Truth is, he always has freaking allergies, he gets shots for it. His daughter is an early teen and she is going to catch crap.

This is all a giant reacharound to distract you from what they are about to stick you with. A broke country. Socialism. You name it.

Write on ATSers, write on.

Why are you complaining? These threads are on their own board. i.e. completely avoidable. If you are complaining because people are panicing unnecessarily, perhaps a well-reasoned, logical, reseached post would serve better than "OMG this is STUPID STOP POSTING!" blather grrr snarl etc.

But of all places, I don't know why you are surprised that HERE, people are overreacting. This is Grand Central Station of overreaction. Honestly, what did you expect? There are people that live for this stuff, and get giggle-fits whenever something like this occurs.

I don't think extra caution is out of the question at any rate.

so questioning things is trolling? bringing to light the fact that people are being gullible and easily manipulated into FREAKING OUT!? Please if anyone at all was trolling in this thread its you... and even that would be a stretch to say the least! But I'm not looking for arguments or to offend people. I'm simply attempting to get people to think for themselves on the matter...

I'm sorry if I've offended you by going against the grain, and I feel for your family member thats going thru this. I pray that they come out of it okay, and I have faith that they will, provided they have better than 3rd world healthcare where they are.

Im sorry, "Extra caution"? Im thinking maybe youre UNDERstating the fear-induced clogging of this board with swine flu threads a bit... And did you even read my post, or just the thread title? Are you one of the people posting all the swineflu threads? What about my post wasn't well reasoned or logical? In my post I made it clear that I'm aware of my ability to avoid the topic. My only use of OMG was in characterizing the people who are over-panicking. And what type of research do I need to do to critique the general reaction of the board on any subject? I can think for myself thankyou!

Also I'd like to make my position clearer on this subject:

I fully understand the reason that people are scared. I dont want anyone in my family to die, and I dont want to die either. I dont want ANYONE to have to deal with this disease or ANY situation where either you or a loved one could perish.

It's a terrible situation, then, when the mere prospect of a pandemic or terrorist action or WHATEVER sits so uncomfortably with people that they are reduced to base and irrational behavior. I blame the media for the most part, but people don't realize that they are joining in on the fear-mongering, and playing the same game as the media without realizing it when they themselves sensationalize the subject.

Pretty soon, the media won't have to report on it as much, it'll be drilled into our skulls so deep that they'll say "SWINE FLU" and we'll line up to get our shots like good little zombies... Is that how it should be? Or should we stop, take a step back, and deliberate first?

We need to be PREPARED, not SCARED!!

What we're seeing is no different than previous times of intense crisis, concern, fear, and alarm. Throughout ATS's history, there's been many examples of when one particular has consumed the entire site for days, or more.

The number of threads and posts is to be expected when a significant news event such as this is happening... and this is significant. I've seen conflicting reports where some people are concerned that many are spending too much time on the story... while health experts are equally concerned not enough time is being spent. There's a real danger of this new strain mutating into something much more deadly as it spreads as freely as it is.

We've been getting some very nice compliments on how well we're responding here, by quickly compartmentalizing the topic, and giving those who are concerned, the tools they need to follow new topics and research the various angles of the problem.

However, that being said, you probably didn't notice the new link on the Recent Posts page that provides an inoculated look at the recent posts list. The link is...
today @ ATS w/flu inoculation
Just use that if you prefer to view recent ATS posts without the swine flu infection.
