"This can't be laughed off.We have over three hundred reports which haven't been publicized in the papers from very competent personnel,in many instances.
...We are running down every report.I can't tell you how much we would give to have one of those crash in an area so that we could recover whatever they are".

Air Force Scientific Advisory Board meeting at the Pentagon.

You are right that the quotes do not prove anything except that the people saying them are no more knowledgeable about the subject of UFOs than the average Joe on the street. Even the pilots who are the best witnesses while they're piloting(!) make unnecessary claims such as what they're witnessing being extraterrestrial, etc. They make the unnecessary jump of faith.

Oh I don't know Ed - the actual content of this statement made by
Dr James Mcdonald makes quite an important point:

"As a result of several trips to project Bluebook,I´ve had an opportunity to examine quite carefully and in detail the types of reports that are made by Bluebook personnel. In most cases,I have found that theres almost no correlation between so-called "evaluations and explanations" that are made by Bluebook and the facts of the case...
There are hundreds of good cases in the Air Force files that should have led to top-level scientific scrutiny of this problem, years ago,yet these cases have been swept under the rug in a most disturbing way by Project Bluebook investigators and their consultants."

Dr James McDonald -Senior physicist at the Institute for Atmospheric Physics and professor in the Department of Meteorology at the University of Arizona

Perhaps thats why the USAF panels had to resort to 'absurdly erroneous' explanations such as these to get the 'actual unknown ' figures down:

Funny you should mention that as there are quite a number of pilot UFO incidents which remain completely unexplained (cases like the Coyne incident, the Minot incident, the Tehran incident, the Little Rissington incident etc.. really are puzzling ones).

As for the ETH, EDH or CTH - theres a good definition of a UFO below:

"The reported perception of an object or light seen in the sky or upon the land the appearance, trajectory, and general dynamic and luminescent behavior of which do not suggest a logical, conventional explanation and which is not only mystifying to the original percipients but remains unidentified after close scrutiny of all available evidence by persons who are technically capable of making a common sense identification, if one is possible."
The UFO Experience: A Scientific Inquiry by J. Allen Hynek, Henry Regnery, Chicago, 1972, p. 10.

Firemoon, that certainly is an interesting statement mate (from a very prominent individual).

Also found it interesting that the French organisation SEPRA (formerly GEPAN) conducted a pretty extensive scientific study on the UFO subject, their conclusion being:

"..there are now sufficient material evidences that some ufos are flying machines driven by an intelligence and having flight characteristics that today's human technology is far from reaching".

Interesting comment by Richard M Dolan:

As a result, the easiest thing to do with UFO evidence is to ignore it, which is what most people do. Much harder is to confront it honestly, whether this means accepting or debunking it. That is, accepting into one's worldview something as "far out" as extraterrestrials is not easy for many people, especially when one's official culture finds little more than ridicule in the subject.
But honest debunking is very, very difficult, considering the compelling nature of so many UFO cases. Personally, I am close to the position that it is impossible to do this honestly, but will leave the benefit of the doubt to some exceptional, as yet unfound, individual.

The problem with nearly all skeptical arguments against alien visitation is that, quite simply, they fail to look at the UFO evidence. They all sound great in theory, but fall apart when presented with a few good reports. In the end, skeptics are forced to fall back upon their most often-used weapon: claiming a UFO event was a hoax.

Hey bud - glad you did and good to see you too.

Gen Lionel Max Chassin,Commanding General of the French Air Forces, makes an interesting observation on UFO debunkers:

[atsimg]http://files.abovetopsecret.com/images/member/1d4212c6efd5.gif[/atsimg]

"Obsessed with the notion of his own omniscience, it enrages him to be confronted by phenomena that do not agree with this conviction. Finding in his limited armoury no explanation that satisfies him, he chooses to doubt rather than himself, and rejects the most obvious facts in order to avoid putting his faith to the test.
The mistaken pride and anthropocentrism that supposedly went out with Copernicus and Galileo make him a peril to science, as history abundantly proves. …
That strange things have been seen is now beyond question, and the “psychological” explanations seem to have misfired. The number of thoughtful, intelligent, educated people in full possession of their faculties who have “seen something” and described it grows every day. Doubting Thomases among astronomers, engineers and officials who used to laugh at “saucers” have seen and repented. To reject out of hand testimony such as theirs becomes more and more presumptuous."

Commanding general of the French Air Forces
and Air Defense Coordinator of NATO Allied Forces

"All over the world credible witnesses are reporting experiences similar to mine. Holding these people up to ridicule does not alter the existing facts. The time is long overdue for accepting the presence of these things, whatever they are and dealing with them and the public on a basis of realism."

Captain Ed Ruppelt (1956):

After the Fort Monmouth, NJ, radar sightings (which started on Sept 10, 1951), the Air Force held a meeting at the Pentagon. General Cabell presided over the meeting, and it was attended by his entire staff plus Lieutenant Cummings, Lieutenant Colonel Rosengarten, and a special representative from Republic Aircraft Corporation. The man from Republic supposedly represented a group of top U.S. industrialists and scientists who thought that there should be a lot more sensible answers coming from the Air Force regarding UFOs.

"Every word of the two-hour meeting was recorded on a wire recorder. The recording was so hot that it was later destroyed, but not before I had heard it several times......it didn't exactly follow the tone of the official Air Force releases--many of the people present at the meeting weren't as convinced that the 'hoax, hallucination, and misidentification' answer was quite as positive as the Grudge Report and subsequent press releases made out."

U.S. Government Statements

The involvement of the American government in the UFO mystery has long offered its own set of questions.
Known investigations have produced ambiguous results, and explanations offered for specific cases have frequently been at odds with scientific reasoning.
Sometimes, little-publicized official statements have supported the position that UFOs are real and unexplained:

July 30, 1947: "This 'flying saucer' situation is not all imaginary or seeing too much in some natural phenomena. Something is really flying around."

Sept. 23, 1947: "The phenomenon reported is something real and not visionary or fictitious."

Oct. 28, 1947: "It is the considered opinion of some elements that the object may in fact represent an interplanetary craft of some kind."

Dec. 10, 1948: "It must be accepted that some type of flying objects have been observed, although their identification and origin are not discernible."

"We use the best equipment to detect objects in our skies...even strange ones, with great results. We can distinguish between a commercial plane or other objects with our modern equipment.
