SYDNEY: Australia raised the swine flu alert level in the worst hit state of Victoria on Wednesday and warned more areas would follow as the
national total topped 500.
Health Minister Nicola Roxon said Victoria, which accounts for about 80 percent of cases, needed greater protection but stopped short of cancelling sports events.
"I've been advised by the chief medical officer that it's appropriate to move Victoria to a modified 'sustain' phase," she said.
"I've provided that advice to the prime minister, who has agreed that is the appropriate action to take. The rest of the country will remain at 'contain.'"
Roxon said Australia, the most badly affected Asia-Pacific country, now had 502 cases including 395 in Victoria. The vast majority of infections have been reported in the past week.
(NaturalNews) Dr. Paul Offit of the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) received at least $29 million from his share of royalties for Merck's Rotateq vaccine after using his position with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to ensure that childhood vaccination with the vaccine became compulsory.
Between 1998 and 2003, Offit sat on the U.S. government's Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP). His involvement with development of Rotateq began before and ended after these dates.
While a member of the ACIP, Offit consistently voted in favor of making vaccination against rotavirus part of the compulsory U.S. childhood immunization schedule. He also voted to rescind recommendation of Wyeth's competing vaccine RotaShield, while aggressively advocating for the idea that other rotavirus vaccines would be less dangerous.
The Tasmanian Government is warning that a swine flu outbreak could strain the state's health system to breaking point.
Health authorities are predicting 200,000 Tasmanians could catch the virus in the next three months and about 4,000 of them could need hospitalisation.

ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. -- Health agents said that the death of an Ocoee High School student may have been caused by the Neisseria Meningitidis bacteria.
Officials at the Orange County Health Department said that preliminary lab results indicate that the bacterium is responsible.
The department is working to identify those the student had close contact with to make sure they can get a prophylactic medication.
“Meningococcal disease is a severe infection of the bloodstream and/or meninges (thin membrane covering the brain and spinal cord) caused by the bacteria Neisseria meningitidis. This infection is a contagious disease, but not spread by casual contact. Only very close contacts of the infected student need to receive preventive medications,” said Dr. Kevin M. Sherin, Director of the Orange County Health Department.
The agency said that meningococcal disease is rare and usually happens during an isolated incident.
The symptoms from the bacterium may appear two to 10 days after exposure, but usually occur within five days. Those symptoms include fever, headache, vomiting, stiff neck and/or a rash.
People who are experiencing symptoms should seek medical attention and call the department at 407-858-1420.
June 3 (Bloomberg) -- Swine flu, becoming entrenched in Australia and Chile, will prompt the World Health Organization to declare the first influenza pandemic in 41 years, said three people familiar with the agency’s plans.
Margaret Chan, the WHO’s director-general, will make the announcement sometime in the next 10 days, said the people, who spoke on condition of anonymity because the deliberations are private. The agency, having spent the past five years alerting the world to the dangers of a pandemic, is now looking for a way to declare one without causing panic.
Chan has to navigate a delicate path between raising alarm about a virus that in most cases causes little more than a fever and a cough, and underestimating a bug that could kill millions. Moving to the top of WHO’s six-step pandemic scale may spur some countries to restrict travel, ban public events and adopt other measures that aren’t needed for mild flu, worsening the deepest economic slump since the Great Depression.

This announcement I just heard on the MSM. I have not heard one word on TV in over a week, so I would expect this level change soon. As you can see it will not be the highest level as they now have a severity index. I predict that will come next fall/winter.
