Eton shuts as boy gets swine flu
Eton College
Eton College had been due to re-open on Sunday after half-term

"Public school Eton will close for a week after a pupil tested positive for swine flu, a school spokesman has said.

The Berkshire boys school, which was attended by Princes William and Harry, was informed on Wednesday that a 13-year-old boy had tested positive."

I find this interesting. Anyone know if the Obama children are still attending school throughout all of this? The ed. institution where I am at had staff and some others-- go on a national trip about 2 weeks ago. I told the staff member--great--you will bring the flu here--guess what--they did.

Kansas Stops Testing for Swine Flu in Certain Areas

"Beyond this, we have stopped testing specimens from a number of places in Kansas where it is already clear that the virus is circulating," Dr. Eberhart-Phillips said. "Capacity for testing at the state public health laboratory is limited and has to be restricted primarily to identifying cases in counties not currently known to have widespread viral transmission," he added.

I think they stoped tests because, right now, nearly all flu circulating in the US is H1N1. So, almost everybody infected with influenza virus is actually infected with the "swine flu" virus.
Health Ministry in Chile already made a statement today saying 90% of all flu virus circulating in the country is H1N1.

Less than one hour ago Columbus health officials confirm another case of swine flu. City now has 10 confirmed cases; state has 19 as reported on the local news as of 1:41 PM EST

Columbus health officials confirmed another case of the swine flu this afternoon.

The latest case of the new, deadly flu involves an adult male, according to Columbus Public Health

This brings the total number of swine flu cases in Columbus and Franklin County to 10. In Ohio, there have been 19 confirmed cases of the swine flu, also known as the H1N1 virus.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says there are almost 8,000 confirmed and probable cases of this flu that has killed 11 people across the United States.

Another local report indicates more than 13,000 cases worldwide with 8,000 in the US and 11 reported deaths.

OSU Campus residents seem to be the most affected in the city.

Fairbanks woman contracts swine flu

The first case of swine flu in Alaska has been confirmed by state health officials.
The case involves a middle-aged woman from the Fairbanks area whose flu-like symptoms started about two weeks ago, said the state Department of Health and Social Services.
State epidemiologists are investigating where and how she might have gotten the H1N1 virus and to learn who she might have been in contact with while she was contagious.

P arents sick over swine flu absences don masks outside PS 96 in Queens to demand school be closed

Parents rallied at a Queens elementary school Thursday to demand the city close and sanitize the building after scores of students - and the school nurse - called in sick.
"These are four and five-year-olds coming down with 102-degree fevers and infecting their siblings," said Monica Hendricks, 46, one of 15 parents protesting outside Public School 96 in South Ozone Park.
"There is no logical explanation why our school is not closed."
Parents said more than 80 of the school's approximately 300 students were out sick - along with several teachers and the school nurse.
City health officials said the threat of swine flu could be overblown.

Ok I just talked to the guy at the emergency response hotline and he admitted that this flu is very similar to the 1918 strain in fact they noticed this from day one! Wow finally a public health offical admitting that! In order to protect yourself from this flu which is either man made from the 1918 strain or because the samples in the vault might have some how been realeased please investigate the 1918-1919 pandemic. This information will help you understand what could happen. History repeats itself. History in fact is repeating itself in a quicker speed than back in the 20th century. Also do some research on the mayan calenders to help understand what I am talking about. We have had a recession/depression., a war, terrorist attacks, and now a possible flu pandemic. In the 20th century major events were spread apart by a decade or so.

A local school where I live announced the first case of swine flu in an elementary student. They said the case was mild and he/she went back to school - no precautions taken.

I am confused as to why they were able to confirm this as a case of swine flu since it was a mild case - I thought they were saying that they are only confirming cases where the case requires hospitalization. We already had a couple of cases in the area so it wasn't like it was the first possible case either. Are only certain areas testing?

I am also amazed by how many people have commented on this and other local stories about how they feel it is the media overreacting and it isn't anything to be concerned about.

Dr. Anne Schuchat, the C.D.C.’s interim deputy director for science and public health, said that in the United States, 507 people have been hospitalized because of swine flu. She noted that people over 55 account for only 1 percent of cases, and 62 percent of the people getting sick are from 5 to 24 years old.

In children, warning signs to seek medical attention include:

* Fast or troubled breathing.
* Skin turning bluish or gray.
* Persistent or severe vomiting.
* Not drinking enough fluids.
* Being unusually hard to wake up or not interacting.
* Being so irritable that the child doesn’t want to be held
* Flu-like symptoms improve but then return with fever and worse cough

In adults, serious warning signs include:

* Difficulty breathing or shortness of breath.
* Pain or pressure in the chest or abdomen.
* Persistent vomiting.
* Sudden dizziness.
* Confusion.
* Flu-like symptoms improve but then return with fever and worse cough

I believe it was predicted by another poster on another thread that the virus may return after a lag time. Seems he was right. Nice to see the CDC state this now.

The child's parents may have requested testing or the child was brought into ER with breathing difficulties and they decided to test--which was my daughter's case. Recall--mild is any condition other than a ventillator. In my vicinity, a man with swine flu, in a press report, stated that he had a "mild" case because he did not have a "other" serious illness. He was home for 7 days and described his breathing as difficult.

Antmar's official stats are highly valued for what they can tell us, but we may need to multiply them at some factors (the multiplication factor would probably vary depending on the integrity of reporting in any particular state, country, or region) and hope WHO and CDC don't stop the official tallies. If anything they should be trying to catch up with the actual figures and increase testing or at least increase the sample sizes.

To be honest, every day I study those number and it makes me sick knowing they are so far off!!!

Not only are these numbers so outrageous wrong, but they are used whenever the media does general write-up stories. So, no wonder so many people are nonchalant over this, thinking its no worse than a "mild" snivell. If I wasn't watching this thing so intensely I'd not even know there was any problem at all either.

But I continue with recording the numbers thinking that at least the pattern would be helpful....

But now I question that too because some aren't even recording their numbers AT ALL. What a crock.

Meanwhile, the general public, understandably, doesn't realise that a potentially fatal risk is here and they should be educating themselves on the hazard, protecting themselves by hygenie etc, and preparing themselves by having some basics at home, just in case.

Grrrrr
