Let me get this straight.... you have a problem with people encouraging children to go out, volunteer and help out the community? Why in the world is that a bad thing?

Is it ok to encourage your kids to do it, as long as it is you and no one else? How do you figure?

I just don't get why it is bad to encourage children to go out and volunteer. I did it as a kid. I volunteered for the SPCA , local homeless shelters etc.... I am all the better for it too, I am glad I was encouraged to do so, because it taught me alot of valuable lessons, about the treatment of other people and animals etc...

I am sorry, well no I am not, I just do not understand why any of you are against people encouraging children to go out and volunteer. It is not like they are being forced to volunteer. If that was the case I would be against it, but it is not the case luckily.

They are showing that volunteering is a good thing, and let's be honest, anyone who has volunteered will no doubt agree that it is a great learning experience.

The kids are not being forced to do this, and kids are alot more capable of making their own decisions than most adults give them credit for. If they want to volunteer, LET THEM! Don't let your own political problems get in the way of your childs potential learning experiences.

Volunteering is not bad, it is not evil, it is not, a liberal ploy to create a sort of obama youth. It is just volunteering. That is it! Nothing more nothing less.

FORCED "volunteer" work is NOT volunteer work at all it's called SLAVE work. Are you so thick headed you can't comprehend that simple fact?

I'm guessing Civil War 2. It makes me more aware , as to why all the states are declaring Sovereignty.

It wont be the states fighting each other but the government.

This could end up like the division of the Soviet Union though, if we went that route.

I have kids, as well and wont allow this mantatory servitude.

I have a better idea. How about ACORN, since they have a lot of time on their hands and no regular jobs, how about converting ACORN and all welfare recipients into his service corps?

WHAT people have a problem with is that this is not VOLUNTEER work.

In case people do not know what VOLUNTEER means, here ya go:

Nowhere does the meaning of VOLUNTEER say "forced to do" or "mandatory" which is what this sounds like.

I actually already VOLUNTEER my time, energy and money. I do it on my own merit with no strings attached to it. Nobody makes me do it. Nobody coerces me or manipulates me. I CHOOSE TO VOLUNTEER at my leisure and where I want and how I want.

THIS is how it should be in the UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. THAT is volunteerism.

The word volunteer being used by Mr. Obama and Company is manipulative and deceptive. It is wrong.

What they SHOULD do is FORCE all welfare recipients to do this "volunteer" work. Make them work for their pay and in turn help others. Those should be the first put into Obama's work camp.

You're right. Volunteering is a good thing and more people should be willing to do it. However, when it's government mandated it is no longer volunteering. Doing what you're told to do isn't volunteering to do it.

Working at a homeless shelter because you want to = volunteering
Working at a homeless shelter because you are told to = mandated service

You do the same work either way, but the first everyone agrees to and does on their own. The second is no better than enslavement.

Volunteering is not bad, servitude is. And the government can cram it's "service to the state" up it's ass. Neither you, congress, or lord Obama tell me what to do with my kids. Do you understand? The Government, and the idiots that support it need to back the #$%^ off. Children are not wards of the state.

If this program "become a sucess" that I doubt it, what we will have is a new generation of servants to the state that will do as the state tells them to do, they will be indoctrinated into believing that the only way to be somebody is through servitude.

Who are to benefit, corporate America that wants free labor and the government that wants servitude from the population.

I wonder if the children will be "forced" to wear uniform during the servitude time

Thank you my friend, sometimes people doesn't' get see the magnitude of forced obligation to any body in a nation of the free.

Everything that is done by corrupted governments to the way that our nation has become has a hidden agenda behind it.

And I am glad that I have not children at home that I will have to fight for against this completely disregard for my children Constitution and civil rights.

Mandatory community service is what prisoners have to do when they are probated back into society... With this program from Obama its basically cutting out the jail time and sticking kids into indentured servitude for the Feds.

Any one who thinks this is a good idea should research Soviet labor camps. And do i even need to mention the Nazis... again? Too late i just did.

I really hope the sheeple wake up soon.

This sounds like a job corp kind of thing aimed at the lower classes.
It may help a few kids find a direction and succeed in life, but for the most part it is just a futile attempt to help the losers who will simply keep on losing.
Not everybody can win. Life just doesn't work that way.

The whole point is this. Yeah maybe it wouldn't be such a bad idea to get kids involved in their community. God knows they aren't going to do it on their own. But what people who defend this are forgetting is that this is the same government that has been robbing us blind via the federal reserve. This is the same government that has continually fought a war against an enemy they created. This is the same government that day after day continues to jerk one right after another from us. BUT I'M SURE THEY ONLY WANT WHAT'S BEST THIS TIME RIGHT? They have a horrible track record that goes back for decades and history is starting to repeat itself. STOP DEFENDING THEM. They don't give a rat's a** about you or your kids except for their own agenda.

I'm against children being used to fulfill some politicians agenda. I would go into the differences between mandated service and volunteer work, but other posters have covered it for you.
