Canadian Navy Saves Norwegian Tanker. Forced To Release Pirates.

edition.cnn.com

Pirates attempted to capture the MV Front Ardennes at 6 p.m. Saturday and were apprehended seven hours later, Commander Chris Davies told CNN.

A NATO-supported Canadian navy ship, the HMCS Winnipeg, was returning from escorting a World Food Program vessel in the gulf when it saw the Norwegian ship under attack, Davies said.

How frustrating is this? First the American navy seal snipers have the captors of Captain Phillips in their sights and are not given the command to fire... for three god damned days.

www.norwaypost.no...

www.theglobeandmail.com...

And now, pirates attack an unarmed Norwegian tanker unaware that a Canadian navy ship was in the area. The Canadians bore down on the pirates who quickly surrendered when they became convinced the Canadians weren't foolin' around. The 'Winnipeg' bristles with firepower (relatively speaking... it's a Canadian ship) and the Canucks didn't really have a lot of time to waste waiting for orders from above. The captain just attacked. The pirates were even brazen enough to ignore warning shots from a helicopter gunship. So the Canadians turned the lights off their ship, snuck up on the pirates under the cover of darkness, simply jumped on board the pirates skiff and stuck some guns in their faces. How in hell do ya pull that one off?

www.monstersandcritics.com...

Captured and securely in the hands of the crew of the HMCS Winnipeg, the pirates had nothing to worry about, because NATO has rules that forbid the Canadians from doing anything once they had all the pirates captured. Up until now, these dangerous pirates have been able to do anything they damn well pleased in those waters. So do you think the Canadian sailors who laid a rare smackdown on the pirates were happy about this? No, they weren't!

"There have been a lot of comments in the media about how much easier it was a couple hundred years ago, when we could just hang them from the yard arm," Canadian Rear Admiral Bob Davidson said in an interview with CTV's Question Period yesterday.

The Canucks capture all the pirates in this particular attack, and are forced to release them all. How insane is this?

The US allowed to prosecute pirates but Norway isn't? Just because the piracy was thwarted and the lives of the crew members on the ship were spared, the pirates are allowed to go free? Or is it that Norway just doesn't have piracy laws so there was no where to take them? This whole piracy issue makes my blood boil.

Apparently the rules are decided by NATO. So Norway really had nothing to do with the action at sea. Canada is a member of NATO so had to obey the rules that basically didn't allow the Canucks to shoot to kill. Oh man... when the pirates find this out it's just gonna get worse.

You hit the nail on the head with that. So the reason there hasn't been a large scale international response to the piracy is because no one is really allowed to do anything. Awesome.

tenth... I hadn't even heard about the jet being hijacked. I was working on some stock market stuff all weekend so maybe I just wasn't listening to the news. Thanks for the link.

Hey! I found out what's goin' on here. NATO rules would only allow the Canadians to have blown them out of the water if it had been a Canadian tanker. The Dutch marines on Saturday saved a Greek tanker and they were in the same unfortunate position the Canadians were... because it wasn't a Dutch tanker that the Dutch marines saved. This is just nuts.

In the American case, it was an American captain so the Americans seals had the green light... once Obama got off his ass and made a decision. Yes, Obama had to green light that one. That's the only reason the pirates were in the sights of the seal snipers for 3 full days before they pulled their triggers.

GOOD job!

To our Canadian cousins up north on a job well done.
I think it was pretty lame that they had to let them go

There is currently no formal procedure for NATO personnel to follow once they have apprehended pirates,

NATO has no procedure for handling Pirates so their answer is to let them go

What would have happened if Canada had of blown them out of the water ? Would we then see the Pirates bring Canada up on charges at some NATO court ?

if they want to send a message LOUD AND CLEAR to the pirates any nation with a warship should just blow them out of the water.
that might help to prove a point.
and people might think canadians are all "where's the beer eh?" but they have some great special forces. maybe not a military power but don't mess with what they do have. same as australia.
and the un needs to do something also (yeah i know that is a joke)like let the pirates get killed and warn them that this WILL happen if they don't stop piracy. period. and as someone else said if they go free all the time they will just get bolder and bolder so just kill all of them when you catch them and show we aren't f###ing around
oh wait can't because then human rights people will be up in arms

That is the best question I've read today. I truly wonder what would happen. Had it been a Canadian tanker, then the warship would have had an automatic green light and more than likely the pirates would all be playin' harps right now.

Why does this sound like NATO is protecting the pirates? I mean, is NATO affiliated or priated themselves? Their must be a reason. ITs international water too, so what right/law does NATO have? I mean, the canadians should have put the pirates on trial ASAP bfore any kind fo law or sanctions would try n stop it...
Your honor, we the navy, the defense of canada, caught these priates RED handed, attmetping to steel property of value, and possible kidnapping and murder... and NATO wants them set free? SO! I can kill someone off coastal waters, get set free next day, then countersue with a multi mmillion dollar offense..
sick world our leaders descisions are making.

I think the US and Canadian Navy should have authority in killing people attacking their respective ships.

But we have to keep in mind that the pirates started as an unofficial coast guard to keep commercial fishers and industrial waste dumpers out of waters the people of Somalia need to survive.

There is no easy answer to this situation.

And guns blazing is not any where near a solution.

I wholeheartedly disagree. The less violent thugs in the world, the better. I think they should be apprehended if possible and given a fair trial, but if there is imminent danger to innocent life, then the military forces should shoot to kill.

I agree with you 100%. I've only come to realize recently that the Somali pirates aren't only after money. More importantly they're trying to draw attention to illegal fishing in their waters and dumping of horrible toxic wastes in the ocean near their shores. Thanks to the MSM, that information has been withheld from me and the rest of the world.

I'm totally in favor of addressing those issues rather than just painting them all as thugs and ramping up the war machine against them.

I bet those pirates would be overjoyed if they were prosecuted in Canada , they would get amnesty a slap on the wrist and in a few short years full Canadian citizenship .
