I blame the Colonials, personally

They spell things wrongly (Labor rather than Labour, Humor rather than Humour etc) and when they do spell things properly (Herb), they can't pronounce it ('Erb)

I should hope so, or I'd have to send the Laughing kitten to disrupt the proceedings

Hmmm, I personally type up my replies in word before posting just to be sure that everything is spelled correctly.

I think Micro$oft is trying to slowly dumb down society; All through high school and most of college so far I have been required to type my papers, and I notice that my spelling in hand-written correspondence has deteriorated. And its not just stupid mistakes, either. Some words that I use frequently I never knew I was spelling wrong because of that damn auto-correction feature.

Really is spelling that improtant when the message is pure and original'?

I look at the content of each post I read, not the way it is written.

Some of the best posts here are among the worst spelling and/or grammar...lol

The issue is implied credibility. Since the only means we have is the written word on this board, those who spend more effort ensuring their words are written properly communicate that they care. We've all made typos and gaffs of syntax here... but some show a more persistent lack of awareness of grammar and spelling. We make judgments, like it or not, based on that. Of course, the worst offense is using IM-speak shortcuts and 733+ speak (pr0n, teh, etc.) in a message post.

Sorry to say this but you spelled gauge and definitely wrong.

[Edited on 24-4-2004 by kinglizard]

Most of the time I'm a great speller, but "definately" always gets me. Who nows why....

Despite that I tend to be a huge grammar nazi. Spelling is excusable due to typos, but confusing "your" with "you're", or "their" with "they're".... SACRILEGE!

Blame the Colonials' weird language choices for their being mostly from the west country. The southern US twang is linguistically descended from the wess vinglun!

Folks in Kentucky get stung by wopses, too

One of the things I have issues with is when people mistake "should have / should've" or "could have / could've" with "should of" and could of".

"should OF" and "could OF" are wrong wrong wrong...
go back to grammar school.

A lote of the problem is people having dyslexia. I have it, and untill now it has kept me from posting on chat sites because people get annoyed when things are mispelled.
Some people don't understand how difficult it is to struggle with. Besides, my husband is a teacher and he tells me that educational studies have shown that dyslexics have a higher average intelligence than the regular population, therefore your theory that spelling correctly is a sign of overall intelligence goes out the window, and he, who is not dyslexic, won two spelling bees as a student.

It would be nice if we had a spell check. Mine was done by my husband.

Eh, because my brother has dyslexia I know spelling has nothing to do with intelligence.
My brothers' kindergarten teacher told my mom he was retarded.
My brother is 32 years old today and makes more money that that bitch ever did, and he still cant hold an f ing pencil right.

Uh...that is not what I said. LOOK at the line, it says: "Why is the spelling so bad?". So according to you, it should read: Why is the spelling so badly? I'm not too sure what you are trying to say there.

i wasnt talking about the thread title, i was talking about the post you made, fifth from the top.

the mispelling that bugs me the most is "eye" instead of "I". why go through the effort of pressing two extra buttons to make it harder to read for everyone else?

What a bloody boring thread! It only got interesting when it got the original inventors of the English language got mentioned, then informed that because we're not from the US we know it as a 2nd language. Yes, Americans, you speak English, it comes from ENGLAND. (Sorry, it's my pet peeve, when American's treat it as their language), it's colour, not color god dammit you lazy people. And why do you insist in prounouncing so many words as if they have 'ass' in the middle of them??

Oh and back on the original topic, I do get annoyed when people talk like this : I woz l8 n he said that e woz, but yeh but no but yeh, I dint steal no ka!
*Echem* you're not sending a text message from a MOBILE phone. But little things are fine.

P.s - I've probably made a million and one grammical errors in this, so excuse me and my typos. I also have no problem with Americans and am racist in no way, shape or form.

So I'm lazy because I type color instead of colour? This is the way my school taught me to spell the word. How would I have know otherwise? As for the pronunciation of words, again, that too is learned in school along with the fact that there are many different dialects in the US. I don't think my Aunt (originally from Japan is being insist because she says Herro instead of Hello. Personally, I find it an endearing and enjoy the variance.
