I think most of us can agree that US government spending is out of control. I have an idea, and I want to test it on you guys.

Since we cant seem to trust democrats or republicans to control spending even though we are 10 -50 TRILLION dollars in debt (depending on whether or not you factor in Social Security and Medicare), the citizens need to gain an upper hand in this spending game.

So I propose we create an Amendment to the Constitution of the USA. This amendment will limit the overall percent of our income that can be taxed by all taxing authorities (fed, state, local, sales, etc.). This amendment should also force the government to not spend more than it takes in over a given year. This amendment should also force a set percent of yearly government income be committed to paying off the principle on the national debt, until it is completely paid off.

I would like any input on how to word this or make it better, or whether its even a good idea.

Thanks

There have been so many attempts to do just this, and all have failed in the long run. Rather than repeat what is already history, I submit this link, which will give you a good rundown of all of the hows, whys and why-nots:

it would be awesome if we could do this ... but we'd have to make some pretty big 'contribution's' to most of Congress's 'campaign' funds in order for it to even be imaginable imho....

Ok this is something I am not knowledgable about. Do we have to have congress put the amendment up for vote, or can we just put the amendment up for vote as long as there is enough citizen support for it?

well i'm pretty sure that you have to have someone in Congress actually introduce the amendment ... the people can't do this, i think, if we could Congress would be inundated with amendments/bills/etc.

You're welcome. BTW, the balanced budget amendment is an excellent idea. The short reason it would never pass is that there are too many Congressional members that want their favorite program passed, and they make deals with others that also want their programs passed, but of course, no one wants to face re-election having to tell their constituents that they just raised their taxes, so the amendment never makes it out of the house.

Won't ever happen unfortunately. The next step for us is crumbling, just as every great empire does.

Honestly, tech has to be erased first. Tech is the problem to every great empire. It makes people lazy and when they get lazy it is an opportunity to take and the smart ones do.

Think about it. You have to buy land from someone who never owned the land, because no one can own anything...we all die. Everything you own will be an a landfill someday even the most precious things. Nothing lasts, it's just reborn with a memory lapse.

Until people can govern themselves and live together being a law to themselves, you will never see the nation you are hoping for.

Sorry, that is reality.

Peace

Say hello to VAT.

You can amend the constitution as much as you want as bush said 'its just a piece of paper' and the patriot act is making sure that 'its just a piece of paper', cap the taxation on income, thats a fairly reasonable statement but say hello to the stealth tax, we've been privy to that here in the UK for quite some time, we get taxed on quite literaly everything and itd be fair to assume that i will have to pay tax on the air i breath soon, back to point, you can limit the tax on your income but you will still pay it in VAT as is being proposed now in your country.

What you actually need to do is audit the FED, shut it down, reinstate a true central bank with a propper green back, backed by something other than nothing (as is the feds current operation), sell the feds assets right down to the lawn on their land (yes their land, as they are a private corporate entity, not a federal entity) and you may well be on the road to no national debt. Well maybe after a centuary or two!
