I was surprised when Hugo Chavez held up a copy of Noam Chomsky's Hegemony or Survival at the United Nations.

I've read a lot of stuff by Chomsky and it's some of the most honest history you will ever read. His books are meticulously cited and it really is your loss if you choose not to read any of his work.

Literature aside, Chavez has plenty of reason to distrust US foreign policy. The Bush administration decided to pick one from their cold war play book when they supported a coup attempt by Venezuela's corporate elite in 2002.
