Portage County UFO Chase

One of the most dramatic encounters by police officers with an apparently structured, low-level UFO occurred in the early morning of April 17, 1966. Officers of the Portage County, Ohio, Sheriff's Department first saw the object rise up from near ground level, bathing them in light, near Ravenna, Ohio, about 5:00 A.M.

Ordered by the sergeant to pursue the object, they chased it for eighty-five miles across the border into Pennsylvania, as it seemed to play a cat-and-mouse game with them. Along the route, police officers from other jurisdictions saw the object and joined in the chase.

Deputy Sheriff Dale Spaur and Mounted Deputy Wilbur 'Barney’ Neff had left their scout car to investigate an apparently abandoned automobile on Route 224. Spaur described the sighting in these words:

“I always look behind me so no one can come up behind me. And when I looked in this wooded area behind us, I saw this thing. At this time it was coming up . . . to about tree top level. I'd say about one hundred feet. it started moving toward us...

The investigation by Major Quintanilla actually consisted in a two minutes and a half phone call to the sole Dale Spaur, starting with this question: "tell me about this mirage you saw." Then a second one minute and a half phone was passed again only to Dale Spaur. According to a written and signed testimony by Spaur, Quintanilla wanted him to sign a text specifying that the sighting lasted only a few minutes. When Spaur protested that it was at least a 60 miles car chase covering two states, Quintanilla put an end to the conversation. It required Congressional pressures to have Quintanilla make his way to Ravenna to meet and interview Spaur and Neff. This time, Weitzel was there because Spaur asked him to tape his interview with Quintanilla. A partial transcription of the tape reproduced in Dr. J. Allen Hynek's first book "The UFO Experience," is very telling of the ways and manner of Quintanilla when he interrogated UFO witnesses.

Police chief Gerald Buchert was on duty in Mantua when he heard over his radio that strange lights were headed east in his direction. He raced home for his camera, and with his wife at his side, took a single photograph of the object glowing in the sky. Buchert quickly developed his film and contacted the FBI, who referred him to Wright-Patterson Air Force Base. Major Hector Quintanilla, head of the UFO debunking Project Blue Book, asked Buchert to send the negatives to him. Later, Quintanilla issued a press release stating that his film was “severely fogged” and claimed that the UFO was a processing defect. He went on to say that the officers involved had chased the planet Venus.

Police Chief Gerald Buchert of Mantua photographed the object from in front of his home. The Air Force told him not to release the photo, but The Cleveland Plain Dealer reported that the photo showed an object that was like two saucers put together, with a light upper saucer upside down over a dark lower saucer. The picture was only seen by a reporter and Mr. Weitzel, NICAP investigator, who was not convinced, but it was never available for analysis.

The sheriff’s office codenamed the UFO Floyd, Spaur’s middle name, to not tip off civilians listening to police bands. In June, while driving down I-80, Spaur saw it again. “Floyd’s here with me,” he radioed. He waited 10 to 15 minutes in the car, his head down, not wanting to see. When he finally looked up, Floyd was gone.

The men who were involved in this incident suffered for it. They were hounded by the media and ridiculed by others. Buchert and Neff stopped talking about the incident to anyone. Panzenella received so many phone calls about the incident that he finally had his phone disconnected. Huston quit the police department and moved to Seattle, Washington, where he became a bus driver, changing his preferred name from Wayne to Harold. Spaur's life was ruined. He was hounded even worse than the others. He began to have personal problems that culminated in his arrest for the assault and battery of his wife. He turned in his badge and made a meager living as a painter. His wife divorced him.

Spaur said:

"If I could change all that I have done in my life, I would change just one thing. And that would be the night we chased that damn thing. That saucer."

Former Ohio Police officer Michael Nelson reveals New information on this case in this video presentation hosted by Mufon. Nelson say's he was sent to a facility that was closing down to clean up some old files and found a file on this case wich contained a piece of aluminum type metal that was highly radioactive (Gamma Scale) he sent it in for examination but they would not return it to him and would only send him the results of the tests. other new information was bricks melting and electrical parts in a car melting and peoples skin being burned as the UFO flew over them. it's a very interesting video. not sure how true it is yet, still checking.

Have a look at what happened in the area 10 days earlier...

April 7, 1966; Mansfield, OH Time not reported. Two sheriffs deputies while on patrol chased a bright round object at high speed, seeing it or a similar object five times. The UFO alternately hovered and sped up, the last time departing vertically upward. (NICAP notes.) [Compare to April 17, 1966, Ravenna, Ohio, sheriffs deputies case.]

It seems there were more witnesses than those already mentioned too. I'm not sure if it's part of the Mod's snip, but I didn't see the part about planes being scrambled? According to this account three jets were scrambled to investigate/ intercept the UFO (or Floyd!)...

They lost sight of object at Brady Run Park regained it in Bridgeport, Penna. At about this time officers Lonnie Johnson and Ray Esterly in Salem, Ohio, saw 3 jet fighters attempting to intercept a bright object at about 10,000-20,000 ft about 25° elevation to the E for about 2 mins. In Conway, Penna., at 6 a.m. they met with officer Frank Panzarella who had been watching the object for 10 mins to the E or SE which he described as 25­35 ft half-football-shaped object at about 1,000 ft height (or 1,500-2,000 ft according to the others), when it stopped in the NE towards Harmony, Pennsylvania, then rose. They watched as the object climbed to about 3,500 ft to the left of and level with the quarter moon in the ESE (which was at about azimuth 116° elevation 14° and 11 % illuminated at 6:00 a.m.) and Venus (at 122° azimuth 22° elevation) and it passed near a 707 airliner taking off from Pittsburgh Airport and disappeared shooting up vertically at about 6:10. He just stood there with his mouth open for a minute, as bright as it was, and he looked down. And I started looking down and I looked at my hands and my clothes weren't burning or anything, when it stopped right over on top of us.The only thing, the only sound in the whole area was a hum...like a transformer being loaded or an overloaded transformer when it changes....

I was petrified, and, uh, so I moved my right foot, and everything seemed to work all right. And evidently he made the same decision I did, to get something between me and it, or us and it, or whatever you would say. So we both went for the car, we got in the car and we sat there...."

As they watched, the UFO moved toward the east, and then stopped again. Spaur reported the movement to the dispatcher. The UFO was now about 250 feet away, and was brilliantly lighting up the area ("It was very bright; it'd make your eyes water," Spaur said.) Sergeant Schoenfelt, off duty at the station, told them to follow it and keep it under observation while they tried to get a photo unit to the scene.

Spear and Neff turned south on Route 183, then back east on Route 224, which placed the object to their right. "At this time," said Spaur. "it came straight south, just one motion, buddy, just a smooth glide..." and began moving east with them pacing it, just to their right at an estimated altitude of 300-500 feet, illuminating the ground beneath it. Once more the UFO darted to the north, now left of the car, when they had to speed up to over 100 mph to keep pace with it.

Police Officer Wayne Huston of East Palestine, Ohio, situated near the Pennsylvania border, had been monitoring the radio broadcasts and was parked at an intersection he knew the Portage County officers would be passing soon. Shortly afterward he saw the UFO pass by with the sheriff's cruiser in hot pursuit. He swung out and joined the chase. At Conway, Pennsylvania, Spaur spotted another parked police car and stopped to enlist his aid, since their Cruiser was almost out of gas. The Pennsylvania officer called his dispatcher.

According to Spaur, as the four officers stood and watched the UFO, which had stopped and was hovering, there was traffic on the radio about jets being scrambled to chase the UFO, and "...we could see these planes coming in...When they started talking about fighter planes, it was just as if that thing heard every word that was said; it went PSSSSSHHEW, straight up; and I mean when it went up, friend, it didn't play no games; it went straight up."

Condon report wilfully ignores case:

The Air Force "identified" the UFO as a satellite, seen part of the time, and confused with the planet Venus. Under pressure from Ohio officials, Major Hector Quintanilla, chief of Project Blue Book, had an intense confrontations with witnesses and refused to change the identification, although it was pointed out to him that they had seen the UFO in addition to Venus and the moon at the conclusion of the observation. Major Quintanilla also denied that any jets had been scrambled.

William B. Weitzel conducted an exhaustive investigation on behalf of the National Investigations Committee On Aerial Phenomena (NICAP), obtaining taped interviews, signed statements, sketches, and all pertinent data which was assembled into a massive report that was made available to congressional investigators. When the University Of Colorado Ufo Project was initiated in 1966, a copy of Weitzel’s report was hand-delivered to the director, Dr. Edward U. Condon, for his consideration.
The Condon Report, published two years later, does not mention the case.

Other incidents in Ohio:

Recent reports of UFOs spotted in Ohio's skies may remind us of past incidents over the years in that state.

For example, the 35th anniversary of the so-called "Coyne incident" over Mansfield, in central-northeastern Ohio, recently passed without much notice.

In that Oct. 18, 1973, case, four members of the Army Reserve were in their military helicopter flying from Columbus to Cleveland when a UFO flew in very close proximity to their chopper.

At one critical point, the pilot, fearing a collision, quickly positioned the chopper's controls for a quick descent. Interestingly, the chopper's altimeter showed that it was actually gaining altitude.

This is a very well-documented case and crew members actually completed a formal report for the Army Reserve.

The crew included pilot and aircraft commander Capt. Lawrence J. Coyne, a 19-year veteran of the Army Reserve. The co-pilot was Lt. Arrigo Jezzi. The others onboard were crew chief Specialist 5 Robert Yanacek and flight medic Sgt. John Healey.

The "Trumbull County incident" occurred Dec. 14, 1994, in northeastern Ohio. In that case, peace officers from multiple regional law enforcement and public safety agencies pursued a large object that intermittently emitted bright lights of various colors.

This case was made into a TV documentary segment and police radio transmissions have provided good documentation of the incident.

An earlier northeast Ohio UFO case gained public attention in the movies. It has been reported that the police chase of UFOs in the 1977 movie CLOSE ENCOUNTERS OF THE THIRD KIND was based on an incident on April 17, 1966, in Portage County. In this pursuit, officers from various police agencies followed a UFO into Pennsylvania.

Totally fascinating and amazing case, which has had my attention for some time.

It astounds me that more people do not know about this case. I talk regularly to people about UFO cases, and very few ever know about this one.

This should certainly be "required reading" for all would-be UFOlogists.

What a shame this experience had such a devastating effect on the witnesses lives, to the point of them wishing they had never seen it. Makes you think. We have so many people here longing to have such sightings and even to be abducted etc. Maybe it's a case of "be careful what you wish for..."

Is the change of name for the Major in relation to this case ? or perhaps I have interpreted it wrong, seems like an odd thing for an Intelligence officer to do without a good reason?

Can you shed any light on this?

Great UFO case. I have only read this is passing and never really read up on it. I will look at your links and watch the videos when I can view them on a computer with sound.
If it wasnt a UFO and just planet Venus (which made me laugh) or some other explained object then why would they tell him NOT to publish it??? Fishy to me!

thanks karl 12 and i agree this is a fascinating ufo case. i believe this is smoking gun evidence that the goverment does in fact cover up certain ufo incidents. why would they leave it out of the condon report ? perhaps to give it less notoriety. out of site out of mind.

that answer is kinda obvious to me. they didn't want anyone to see it because this was a real ufo case and since many Police officers witnessed this, they had to suppress any evidence they could.

it's also obvious that the investigation by Quintanilla was approached with intent to cover it up by distorting the facts.

something i noticed was the fact that the ufo was over or near an Airport and shot straight up into the sky just like what was described in the Chicago O'Hare sighting.

"At 5:20 A.M. stopped at Conway Hotel and had a cup of coffee. I then left the hotel coming down Second Avenue to 11th Street and made a left turn on 11th Street preceeded up the hill. Looked to my right and saw a shining object. I thought it was a reflection off of a plane. I got to Mickey's Lounge on the top of the hill and I looked back and it wasn't moving so I turned the police car around and came back down 11th Street and went to Adamowski Service Station on 10th Street and Route 65. I then got out of the police car and looked at the object again. I rubbed my eyes 3 or 4 times but didn't say anything to anyone for the time being. I saw 2 other patrol cars pull up and the officers got out of the car and asked me if I saw it. I replyed SAW WHAT! They pointed to the object and I told them I had been watching it for the last 10 minutes. The object was the shape of a half of football, was very bright and about 25 to 35 feet in diameter. The object then moved out towards Harmony Township approximately a 1,000 feet high, then it stopped then went straight up real fast to about 3,500 feet. I then called the base station told the radio operator to notify the Pittsburgh airport. He asked me if I was sick. I told him if I was sick so were the other 3 patrolmen. The operator got the airport on the line and told them what happened, he told them to hold the line and in the meantime we kept watching the object and at that time a passenger plane passed to the left about 1,000 feet below the object. We relayed the message to the operator and he relayed it to the airport. The object continued to go upward until it got as small as a ballpoint pen.

"It was Sunday A.M. April 17, 1966 when over the Police Radios I heard the Summit County and Portage County radio operators advising there Patrol Cars of a report of a flying object reported by a woman. Later the Portage Patrol Cars reported to his office that he had seen the object and was following it. He was following it east and towards Columbiana County. As he came through Columbiana Ohio I went to Route #14 and waited. At 5:30 A.M. the object went over me at what I thought was around 800'. The object appeared to look like a large Ice Cream cone with point down. The pointed part didn't look like a solid looked more like light beams. At that time I pulled out and caught up with the Portage County Car and followed behind him on into Pennor. The object was traveling at speeds 85 to 105 ground speed. At the entrance to Brady Run Park we lost sight of it. We went on into Bridgeport and then we saw it again. We followed it on into Conway, Penns where a Conway Police Officer had his office to call the Greater Pitt. Airport. At that time I returned back to East Palestine, Ohio."

I live incredibly close to Portage County here in Ohio, so I want to ask around a bit and some family members who've been around a bit longer than I have about this. Would be interesting to see how known this case was around the area!

I've heard about this for some though, I remember seeing a video on it a couple years back, although I do not recall the name of it or where I found it.

Very obvious cover-up occuring here, hopefully this will shed a bit more light on the community!!

thanks Kandinsky for your post and for pointing that out. i did notice it prior to posting and had not looked into it yet, but now that i have done some searching, i am finding nothing else so far confirming that report and when i search for "Mansfield UFO" ...all of the results seem to be directed to the same case about the Ravenna/ Portage county incident.

so i don't know what to make of it yet, but it almost seems as if it's the same report only with the wrong date on it ? ..not sure

it got snipped and Yes according to Michael Nelson (the presenter in the video) the newly discovered Police files supposedly contain information that indicates there was over a hundred civilian witnesses and over 14 Police officer witnesses. so yea, many people seen this UFO and one lady called the Police station to report it.

In Summit County, Ohio, on April 17, 1966, a woman has called the police to report a UFO sighting. Patrol cars in the nearby counties have received the notification through the radio and laughed about it.

After covering the history of UFOs from 1947 onward, McDonald speaks about one of the cases that he felt literally dragged him into the whole controversy; Portage County, Ravenna Ohio, April 17th, 1966, (Spaur-Neff case).

This case of April 17th, 1966 is a beautiful illustration of how the percentage of unidentified shall be reduced to a minimum.

This one was explained in the 1st instance, in the 2nd instance and at present, by Project Blue Book as Echo Satellite and Venus, in the following (manner) sequence.

Air Force Explanation

The officers saw a satellite go overhead, transferred their attention to Venus which was rising in the East, and followed Venus.

McDonald: These men wore out their tires, got two other police officers involved in the chase; at times the object was only 200 ft. above them and they estimated it to be about 40-50 ft. in diameter. One of the officers, Wayne Huston, a police officer in East Palistine, heard the transmissions of the first car. They were coming down Route 14. He realized they weren’t far away. He went out and parked. Sure enough, down the highway came a high-speed car. It had two officers in it. Above it was an unidentified flying object. It was a luminous object that looked vaguely like an ice-cream cone upside down, and this officer sped up, caught up with them, and now there were _two_ patrol cars going down (the highway) and they passed out of Ohio into Pennsylvania.

The chase continued across the state line into Pennsylvania, and as Spaur's vehicle got low on gas, he pulled over to enlist the aid of a Conway, Pennsylvania officer. When Spaur stopped, so did the object. They phoned the Air Force from Conway, and minutes later over the radio they heard that jet fighters were being scrambled to intercept the object. The object had other plans, however, and it suddenly shot straight up and vanished.

so Yes the Police officers did report seeing fighter Jets but as you can see , it was denied by Quintanilla.... not surprising is it ?

also states here that nothing was picked up on Radar but i seriously doubt that if it was ,they would have admitted it. Quintanilla went out of his way to discredit this case and if there was any Radar evidence i would bet he put a Gag order on it.

he Federal Aviation Agency's Air Traffic Control Centers at Oberlin and Pittsburgh said they spotted no unknown objects on their radar early yesterday.

1966 - Police officer Dale Spaur and three other officers chased a 40-foot diameter glowing disc or football shaped object from Ravenna, Ohio to Atwater, Pennsylvania in the pre-dawn hours of this morning. The UFO played cat-and-mouse with them in the pursuit: approaching, waiting for them to catch up, then moving away. It beamed an intense light onto the road. It was last seen shooting straight up into the sky and out of sight. At about the same time and in roughly the same vicinity, a man named George Buchert took a photograph of a double-saucer shaped object in Mantua, Ohio.

The photograph showed an object with a very dark

Mrs Everett Steward was talking on the telephone when she smelled a foul odor in the room. She went to her bedroom, where she had a feeling of being watched. Looking out the window, she saw an oval shaped object with portholes & red, green, & white lights revolving around it. It was 75 ft in diameter & 100 ft up. She woke her husband, who also saw it, and called her married daughter, Mrs Janet Emery, a mile away; the Emerys also saw it, and a neighbor with binoculars could see that it had square windows glowing yellow. Janet went outdoors & saw the UFO eject a red ball, which maneuvered while the first UFO took off southward. The red ball flew 75-100 ft over Jane's head; it was oval, and its underside was shiny like aluminum foil; it was "bigger than my cottage and yard combined." She also smelled the garbage like odor. Mrs Steward went to bed, the odor still in the house. After some time, the room was filled for an instant with brilliant white light; then this vanished, and a globe of light about 21" in diameter appeared at the foot of her bed. Inside this globe were 5 "non-human, hairless heads" with oval, sunken eyes. "Instead of noses, there were slits, and they had no mouths." Telepathically, they repeated several times "We have made contact." Mrs Steward screamed, and the globe disappeared. She was so disquieted by the experience that she was under psychiatric care for the next 2 years.

This incident is a remarkable UFO situation happening in 1994 near Youngstown, Ohio. The case involved the pursuit of a low-flying object by numerous police officials from a wide area. One officer approached the object at close range, saying it 'lit up the ground as if daylight,' and also declared that the electronic/radio instrumentation of his patrol cruiser was "shut down" by the object.

Did find this police radio transcript from 'another' police UFO sighting over Ohio though - seems theres been quite a few.

I cant speak for this case but do know that representatives of the government were intimidating witnesses in the late 60s. May have always done this and and still doing it.

I know having seen and heard it with my eyes and ears. "You didn't see anything and if you keep talking about it we will take everything you have away from you. House, job, children and wife".

Civilian Witnesses

Several civilians claimed to have seen the same or a similar object on the day of the UFO chase. Most of these claims were reported in local newspapers. NICAP members interviewed some of them, but none of the witnesses were known to have been interviewed by U.S. Air Force investigators.

* In Benton Harbor in extreme southwestern Michigan, in the early morning hours of April 17, three garbage men making their daily rounds reported seeing an unusual object hovering over a hotel and emitting a light so bright that they insisted they "couldn't look straight at it." (Clark, 457) They notified police, who arrived in time to see the object shortly before it flew away.

* Sometime between 5.00 and 5.30 a.m., two couples together in a car driving near New Castle, Pennsylvania reported seeing a bright light moving in the sky. Initially thinking that it was a reflection from an airplane, they stopped the car to get a better look. The object stopped when their car stopped. They quickly became convinced that it was no normal aircraft, due to its shape, which one witness described as resembling an "ice cream cone" (though another witness thought it looked more like a "hamburger" (Clark, 457). The object began to move again, and the witnesses followed it in their car for a few minutes before the object accelerated out of view. This account received very sketchy reportage, with the witnesses unsure of the precise time they saw the object. Clark noted that some interpreted this encounter as a second UFO in the same area, though he also notes that, without a firmly established timeline, this interpretation is speculative.

* Thelma James of Newton Falls, Ohio claimed to have seen an unusual aerial object. She had woken at about 3:50 a.m., and unable to sleep, looked out her bedroom window. She saw a bright light slowly ascending in the sky. Clark notes that this was almost certainly the planet Venus, which, from James's perspective, would have risen above the horizon at 3:35 a.m. However, at about 5:15 a.m., Jones noted that a second light, much brighter than the first, had also appeared in the sky, but closer to the horizon, and to the southeast of Venus. This second light seemed to be crescent shaped, and was a very bright yellow color. It continued moving through the sky and was lost to Jones's view at about 5:30 a.m. James's observations match some of the observations made by the police officers in the UFO chase. Clark writes, "...it is unfortunate that none of the investigators interviewed this witness, who saw both Venus and the UFO--in defiance of those who would soon insist that the two were one." (Clark, 458; emphasis his) On the other hand, the rise of Venus and a crescent moon that morning, and the subsequent glare of sunrise, neatly account for these observations.

S&F for you, easynow, a very good post and subject matter. the movie was great, wasn't it? I drove with some friends to a city some 50 miles from home, my friend had this 1964 Mercedes car that was really neat. I have to believe these real incidents are because of Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, and Project Serpio.

Aliens/UFOs held at Wright Patterson Air Field, Ohio ?

Captain Edward Ruppelt while head of the U.S. Air Force's Air Technical Intelligence Center (ATIC) "Project Bluebook", was stationed at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base. - Some believe Wright-Patterson to be a 24 hour Top Secret UFO monitoring and research station. - After the July 2, 1947 crash of a UFO at Roswell, New Mexico, the wreckage of the craft was loaded onto a B-29 and shipped directly to Wright-Patterson AFB in Dayton, Ohio. - Wright Field (as it was formerly known) was the headquarters for the Air Materiel Command (AMC). General Nathan Twining was the Commanding General of the AMC back in 1947.

He is also implicated as being one of the original "MJ-12" members. - Gun camera film taken from F-86A Sabre jets in 1953-54 was later taken to Wright-Patterson AFB for evaluation. - Colonel John Burnett was the Air Attache to the Foreign Technology Division at Wright-Pat in 1965 and met with a Captain Bruce Cathie, a New Zealand airline pilot who related to Burnett that he had discovered evidence for a "worldwide grid system used by UFOs". Burnett revealed to Cathie that intensive UFO research was going on there.

In Cathie's second book he says the following..."The scientific laboratory there, set up for the purpose, was described as a complex of buildings covering a large area and staffed by many of the world's top scientists. Experimental work was carried out twenty-four hours a day, 365 days a year. - The crash of a 100ft in diameter saucer with 16 dead aliens aboard near Aztec, New Mexico in 1948, had its remains sent to Wright-Pat shortly thereafter. - In a book by Jean-Charles Fumoux in 1981 entitled "Preuves Scientifiques OVNI", the author relates how Leon B. Visse, an alleged expert on histons (elements connected with cellular genetic material) was invited in 1959 to a military compound at Wright-Patterson AFB, where he was asked to perform an experiment on the histonic weight of particular cells.

Visse was later taken into a special room where he viewed two humanoid corpses. - Leonard Stringfield contacted a former Navy test pilot known as "P.J.", who related the story of him and several other Navy pilots coming across a saucer-shaped aircraft which was being guarded at Wright-Patterson AFB back in April/1962. He was puzzled by the seeming lack of security since the object was not located in the test facility of the AFB. - Tommy Blann, a researcher, interviewed a Colonel "X" who said, "In the earlier years they had taken some bodies to this base, but later it depended on where they were found.

They had a hell of a time setting up procedures for this operation, as well as getting craft out of the area without it being observed. Usually this was done at nighttime." Colonel "X" also told Blann that he believed that in more recent years the bodies were flown outside the U.S. to a secret naval installation on an island in the Pacific. - Senator Barry Goldwater was denied access into a building at Wright Patterson AFB because it was classified above Top Secret. Goldwater did say that he understood that a plan was underway to release all or part of this material sometime in the future...although he didn't know what it was, he did say that he was aware of the rumours.

Its also interesting that Dr Condon wilfully ignored this case (and many other credible incidents) when compiling his now infamous 'Condon report' - I guess he already had his 'conclusions' drawn up well before he started.
