"It turns out we were looking in the wrong place for weapons of mass destruction,'' said the New York Post on Wednesday in a sarcastic comment on the invasion of Iraq in search of Saddam Hussein's non-existent deadly arsenal. "They were not in Iraq. They were in Lehman Brothers' portfolio."
-New York Post

Nuclear proliferation is a dirty word and the Western governments have continually stressed on this, lashing out at North Korea, Iran and Pakistan for proliferation of the worst kind.

But the US Government was blind to the fact that the infamous Lehman Brothers were also involved, up to their gills, in the nuclear trade right in its backyard! What happened to the much vaunted CIA, FBI and other three letter clubs? Were some of the best intelligence agencies in the world taken for a ride by these sleaze balls? Or were they asked to shut their eyes to this clandestine nuclear trade that was going on right under their noses? Or is free trade in yellow cake not nuclear proliferation?

Yellowcake can be purified and enriched to fuel nuclear reactors or, weapons of mass destruction - nukes. A lively financial market in uranium trading has developed in recent years. Was Pakistan's AQ khan who was recently released from house arrest and wanted by the US government for indulging in the worst kind of nuclear proliferation mixed up in this nuclear trade as well?

NEW YORK 17th Apr 09:

Failed investment bank Lehman Brothers sits not only on toxic sub-prime mortgage loans but also toxic nuclear stockpile. According to reports, the bankrupt bank holds up to 450,000 pounds of uranium — called yellow cake — which can be upgraded to run nuclear plants and make nuclear weapons.

After bankruptcy, it managed to sell its brokerage business to Barclays, leaving it saddled with $200 billion worth of sub-prime loans and yellowcake worth $20 million.

Liquidators have been trying to offload the stuff for months, but the price of uranium has fallen from $65 to $40 per pound because of the global recession, leaving Lehman's yellowcake languishing in a variety of secure storage facilities, some of which are in Canada.

So what the heck was Lehman Brothers doing with nuclear material inside America? How were they allowed to trade in a potentially dangerous substance that could be used for the production of WMDs right inside America? Were they authorized by the Government of the United states to indulge in this kind of hazardous trade?

Forget about Iran and North Korea and Afghanistan. The enemy is within!

probably b/c they are an institution that has been approved and licensed to.. if this was important, believe me you prob. wouldnt hear about it

EDIT : In the OP it said the market dropped in price.. meaning there is a market for this security/commodity.. think of it like soybeans

Hmmm...The early bird catches the worm, what?

OK, seriously, this needs to be investigated unless the govt of the US of A had authorized Lehman to have the yellow cake and eat it too! I mean how can some private company be allowed to trade in highly restricted and potentially dangerous material? Were there any checks and balances? Doesn't seem so! And that sucks! You could be having terrorists sitting on a couple of nukes in some basement right now, for crying out loud!

So what the heck's going on?

Exactly my thought, it could very well be that perhaps with all of this yellow cake all 450,000 lbs. of it just a little bit refined and wired to a few pounds of C4 would make a nuclear device.
A few years ago during the Bush years a warehouse in Iowa was reported to have had C4 explosives go missing or otherwise stolen.
And then our old buddy Richard Cheney said a few times that the detonation of a nuclear bomb in an American city is not a matter of if but a matter of when.
Connect the dots anyone, perhaps?

ummm..

ok hey guys.. this is pretty simple

I like a good conspiracy too but...

You can purchase it too!!

This makes sense.. with countries using this for electricity etc...

You should hedge your bets with some hog and wheat though, maybe go long some GS LOL

Its going for about 160 spot US Dollars right now, have fun

I heard about this earlier: What they have isn't enough to make a nuclear weapon and is very impure. It's several (very hard, even for a country who actually knows what it's doing) steps away from being weapons grade and even if it were, as stated earlier, there isn't enough of it to fuel a nuclear weapon. This is just industrial grade stuff that lehman bros. bought to sell to a legitimate power company when the going rate rose above the original purchasing price.

Associate....do you know (or anyone for that matter know) if 'yellow cake' in it's raw, impure form, is radioactive?

What I mean to ask is: Would it be viable as a 'dirty bomb', or does it need more refinement first? I ask this to (hopefully) dispel the 'fear' aspect that is usually used as such an effective impetus to rile people up so that they behave irrationally (see: "tea parties").

You know, i was alwasys undr the impression it was highly illegal for anyone except governemnt to actuall OWN uranium..and one of the big wall street thieves< ah i mean offices, has craploads of it>? I can only tink of 2 things...either it was some kinda financial fall back on colalteral, or it was intende to be sold to enemy countrys, aka Iran or afghansitan or pakistan, for example. Well not enemy countrys, but countrys the US governemnt dosnt want them to have.
The other thing tha mkes me think, is..the first atomic bomb, was Uranium, its knida rare, and is earth made element, I saw a documentary on history channel many tmes about it, U 236 has to be refined many many times, before it can achive critical mass the chain reaction of one of its atioms set off, going faster and faster colliding into eachothr until BOOM, yuo get yuor mushroom cloud and radiation. PLutonium, was what the 2nd atomic boy was made of, manmade element, more radioactive than uranium, and much stroger. SO! Todays warheads use plutonium, as its easier to make in a lab. As for nuclear power plants, i dont know if they still use uranium rods or not. If plutonium is the favorite world reknown element of mass destruction, what were they doing with Uranium then?
I do know the nais were wroking on an atomic bomb, but they dint know how to furher refine the uranium. I read german sceintst got sick, becaue they ddint quite understand at that time, what radiation really was, rather its effets on humans.

A supply of 500,000 pounds of yellowcake is just “slightly” less than the amount needed to make one bomb, or fuel one nuclear power reactor for a year, if the latest enrichment technologies are used, said Gennady Pshakin, an Obninsk, Russia-based nonproliferation expert.

So, not enough to make a bomb.

As for a 'dirty bomb': no idea, and i don't plan on looking up the instructions, i'm sure i'm on enough government watch lists as it is.

It would take a little bit more that "a little" refined. Yellowcake is still nowhere near what it would take to be a weapon. Think in terms of percentages of purity: single digits for yellowcake, 80+ for weapons. And C4 could not do much to help, as an implosion device would only work with plutonium.

It is radioactive, but not nearly as much as the media would like you to think. "About as bad as having an exit sign explode on you" does not make an attention grabbing headline. Yes it could make a dirty bomb, but I'd be more worried about the explosion itself.

Spelling sucks today.

What I mean to ask is: Would it be viable as a 'dirty bomb', or does it need more refinement first?

Yellow cake, which is typically composed of 70 to 90 per cent triuranium octaoxide (U3O8) is converted into uranium hexafluoride gas (UF6) ahead of enrichment.

The uranium hexafluoride gas is then spun at high speed. The rotation causes a centrifugal force that leaves the heavier U-238 isotopes at the outside of the cylinder, while the lighter U-235 isotopes are left at the centre.

The process is repeated many times over through a cascade of centrifuges to create uranium of the desired level of enrichment for fuel for civil nuclear reactors. For nuclear weapons, the uranium has to be enriched to more than 90 per cent.

In 2004, Iran told the U.N. nuclear watchdog it planned to convert 37 tonnes of yellow cake into UF6 for a civil enrichment program. That, experts said, was enough to make several atomic bombs!

While yellow cake is not very radioactive, it is nasty and must be kept in air tight containers. If Uranium Hexafluoride gets in contact with water, it forms poisonous and corrosive gasses. And some mixed with the city's water supply would...Well, nuff said!

In other words terrorists wouldn't need to build a 'dirty' bomb, as the UF6 could well be used as an equally destructive agent in conjunction with water. You'll be screwed just as bad!

Cheers and have a nice day. And oh yes, do check your water! You never know what the fanatic fringe will do next!
