1The fifth angel sounded his trumpet, and I saw a star that had fallen from the sky to the earth. The star was given the key to the shaft of the Abyss. 2When he opened the Abyss, smoke rose from it like the smoke from a gigantic furnace. The sun and sky were darkened by the smoke from the Abyss. 3And out of the smoke locusts came down upon the earth and were given power like that of scorpions of the earth. 4They were told not to harm the grass of the earth or any plant or tree, but only those people who did not have the seal of God on their foreheads. 5They were not given power to kill them, but only to torture them for five months. And the agony they suffered was like that of the sting of a scorpion when it strikes a man. 6During those days men will seek death, but will not find it; they will long to die, but death will elude them.

7The locusts looked like horses prepared for battle. On their heads they wore something like crowns of gold, and their faces resembled human faces. 8Their hair was like women's hair, and their teeth were like lions' teeth. 9They had breastplates like breastplates of iron, and the sound of their wings was like the thundering of many horses and chariots rushing into battle. 10They had tails and stings like scorpions, and in their tails they had power to torment people for five months. 11They had as king over them the angel of the Abyss, whose name in Hebrew is Abaddon, and in Greek, Apollyon.

Abaddon (Hebrew: אֲבַדּוֹן‎, 'Ǎḇaddōn, Greek: Apollyon, Latin: Exterminans, Coptic: Abbaton, meaning "A place of destruction", "The Destroyer", "Depths of Hell") in the Revelation of St. John, is the King of tormenting locusts and the angel of the bottomless pit. (KJV, Rev. 9:1-11). The exact nature of Abaddon is debated.

In the lore of the Coptic Church, Abbaton is the name given to the angel of death. He is given particularly important roles in two sources, a homily entitled The Enthronment of Abbaton by Timothy of Alexandria, and the Apocalyspe of Bartholomew. [3] In the homily by Timothy, Abbaton was first named Muriel, and had been given the task by God of collecting the earth which would be used in the creation of Adam. Upon completion of this task, the angel was then named to be guardian. Everybody, including the angels, demons, and corporeal entities, felt fear of him. Abbaton engaged in prayer and ultimately obtained the promise that any men who venerated him during their lifetime stood the chance of being saved. Abbaton is also said to have a prominent role in the Last Judgement, as the one who will take the souls to the Valley of Josaphat.[3] He is described in the Apocalypse of Bartholomew as being present in the Tomb of Jesus at the moment of his resurrection.

The symbolism of Revelation 9:11 leaves the exact identification of Abaddon open for interpretation. Some bible scholars believe him to be the antichrist[4] or Satan.[5][6][7]
Jehovah's witnesses believe that Abaddon is Jesus. [8](However, original Jehovah's Witness doctrine stated that Abaddon was Satan.)[9]

Some also believe Abaddon to be just an angel. Concerning the angel holding the key to the bottomless pit from Revelation 9 and 20, Gustav Davidson, in A Dictionary of Angels, Including the Fallen Angels, writes:

Anybody think there could be a possible connection here? 9-11 & Abaddon & the Anti Christ?

Has the fifth Angel sounded it's trumpet?

Simply put, Abbadon is the leader of the creatures that are released from the bottomless pit. In Revelation, Antichrist is known as the beast. He is also seen coming when the first of the seven seals is opened.

No, the fifth trumpet hasn't sounded yet. Nor have the seven seals been opened. This will all happen once the Antichrist has risen to power--which many feel could be soon.

analysis:
1. a 'star' falling from the sky to the Earth
(a 'star' often means 'angel'...except Angels like Satan fell from 'Heaven' not the sky...so Abaddon, king of Abyss is not Jesus or Satan, but another entity)

4. the 'Locusts' of/from the Abyss, (AKA; the 'waters of the deep')
are instructed not to destroy the flora or biosphere, but to only torment with pain all those who had not the 'mark of God' (the previously Sealed 144,000) but also commanded not to cause death but only to inflict 5 months of severe pain on the rest of the populations on Earth.

conclusion: A king of the 'Abyss' [Abyss is synomous with deep-space/cosmos... which is AKA; waters-of-the-deep],
brings a hoarde of alien creatures from the 'sky' to planet Earth.
(the aliens appearance is bug-like= see verses 5-10 above).
All earthlings except the 'sealed' 144,000 & the two end-time witnesses are subject to the biological attack which targets human genes & nothing else, the attack lasts for 5 months, 150 days & nights....

the purpose of the 5 month attack which spares the environment seems to be to destroy any resistance from humans, so the alien campaign of colonization or resource exploitation can be realized...
that is why a Genocide is not pursued... As the alien attackers may require
a food source, or slave labor, or ready specimens for experiments...

The question of who Abaddon is has already been answered, but...

...What is so significant about 9-11 that there should be a biblical reference to it?

I realise that some Americans don't realise that there is actually a world outside of the States (not pointing the finger at you specifically, mate) but the events of 9-11 really aren't that important in the greater scheme of things when compared to, say, World War 2, the invention of the silicon chip, or suffrage for women.

No, I don't think there is a connection. St John of Patmos certainly didn't have 9-11 in mind when he wrote his Revelation, and the medieval religious authorities that canonised the bible and divided it up into chapters and verses certainly didn't either.

Cheers.

If one lines up the other trumpets with secular history, just before this text, you will have seen the fall of a significant portion of the Roman Empire.

This text, and all the symbols therein, point to the spread by conquest, of Islam.

The five months, with one day of prophecy being one year, is exactly to the year from the time the Arab horsemen burst forth in conquest until Baghdad was the City of Peace, and the ruler was on good terms with European rulers.

I'm doing this off the top of my head, but I believe the next trumpet sounds, describing the invasion of the Turks. Three powers, three grandsons, and the rank within the Turkish forces was defined by their decoration with a horse's tail.

A Pasha of three tails was a great military leader.

Secular history.

Just think about it. For prophecies to be true, especially a sequence such as what we read with the blowing of the trumpets, you don't get to pull out one and make something of it that doesn't fit the other trumpets, and in sequence.

Common sense says it doesn't work that way.
