What is this?

Proof of God's existence?

A trick of perspective?

Any way you want to interpret this, it is still a beautiful and amazing photograph.

article and photo

The universe is truly diverse and amazing enough that even if just by chance, it still produces something "recognizable" to humans.

It's a nebula......it says in the link

Human brains are amazing at spotting patterns, that's all it is, a pattern. From another angle it probably looks like a bunny haha.

Reminds me of the Helix Nebula or better known as "God's Eye". I'm sure if they take enough pictures from enough angles in space they'll be able to create a whole P/person out of Nebulas.

True about human brains and patterns. However, who's to say how God would appear in space if he/she chose to appear.

It also reminds me of one of the original Star Trek episodes about the Greek god Apollo capturing the Enterprise out in space by forming a "giant hand" to grab the ship.

Excellent photo.

Perspectively based it looks like a hand. Now, at least its not giving us the finger!
That would certainly raise some questions for me?

I'm loving ATS today, toolbar is better, and everyone is all gungho over astronomy, my absolute favorite subject.

Stars must be aligned or something.

Edit- After further observance of the "hand'' it looks like it has two thumbs and three fingers. The appropriate five, but a cool way if our hands were like that!!

WOW,what an amazing picture,it just shows how truly beautiful the Universe is.The expanses of the Universe is such that probability is high of numerous patterns emerging.

This is ridiculous... a huge hand emitting what I believe is known as a "Ha-duken".

A very cool image indeed!

I have another one I've had for some time. I did a cross animation to show just how close it is to the image of a Grey.

Tell me this doesn't spook you too!

It's a real nebula called the Alien Head Nebula by some. No one has seen this yet. I'm a space science geek in recovery
but had to share this.

I've been painting such objects in space for years. All coming true!

Here is one.

And here is a hand or two.

And one more that was one of the first of this I ever did.

Thanks for letting me show these. Usually no one sees them, but this was sort of a dead ringer for the concept. Enjoy, and see you in space!

Truely awesomely spectacular!!!! I don't think this can be put into words, it's absolutely beautiful! However, I doubt it's anything more than that. But you never know, right?

The key here is that most nebulas usually represent something familiar to us. Many times they are even named for what they resemble. Some examples..

"The Cat's Eye Nebula"
"The Horsehead Nebula"
"The Crab Nebula"

It is completely normal for the human brain to make an attempt at pulling out familiar-looking patterns in random chaos. In psychological terms, it is also called pareidolia or Simulacrum. In astronomy, the familiar patterns and shapes almost give heavenly objects a kind of personality. Thus, they sometimes name them after what they resemble (or at least what we think they seem to resemble).
