Former major-league pitcher Mark (The Bird) Fidrych has died in an apparent accident at his farm in Northborough, Mass. He was 54. Worcester County district attorney Joseph D. Early Jr. confirmed Monday that a family friend found Fidrych at about 2:30 p.m. ET beneath a pickup truck. It looked like Fidrych was repairing the truck, the prosecutor said.

This is sad. I grew up watching Bird and his amazing antics on the mound. This guy could pitch and would have been a shoe-in for the Hall if he could have avoided the injuries. It was characters like Bird and Spaceman Bill Lee that made baseball fun and interesting to watch in those days.

Everyone make sure you are safe when you get under your vehicles.
