Because they had mixed religion and sciences together. That's the Aztec btw, if you're talking about apocalypto.. lol. Anyway, they were into
sacrifices and stuff because that was their religion and their sciences came down from high priests etc so religion and science meshed for them. The
calendar could be anything, we will just have to wait and find out. Personally I think they used the calendars to track several things, comets or
annual changes etc. Basically the same thing we use ours for. Full moon this night this night and etc. It's hard to say why the calendar ended at
that date or what "change" they were talking about but one cannot brush it off as nonsense. These people no matter how barbaric we think they are
had a vast understanding of what universe around them they could see. Much earlier than we did. To simply brush off the calendar as nonsense could
mean putting away evidence of a possible cataclysmic event. This is just an example. Perhaps the calendar in some way was a tracking device for the
time that butt loads of cosmic dust from the center of the milky way would make its way to earth and perhaps alter humans in some way. This is just
another example.
Surely it would be more ignorant to deny something that is ancient simply because we do not fully understand it, then it is to spend more time
attempting to understand it. But maybe that's just me.
