Israel Must Give Up the West Bank Settlements

www.washingtonpost.com

Previously, we had thought it was Palestinian intransigence that prevented a two-state solution. A look at the settlements demolishes this explanation. The settlements and the maze of Israelis-only roads and military checkpoints to sustain them makes clear that successive Israeli governments -- Labor and Likud alike, as Mr. Abrams noted -- have actively pursued policies aimed at colonizing the West Bank.

That prevents the establishment of a viable and contiguous Palestinian state

The article speaks of an article called the settlement freeze
But I am unable to access it because I am not a member.

Does anyone have access to this page that perhaps they can give us a link to, or at least a snapshot.

This is a good article for those that believe that the two-state solution will never happen because of Palestine. Because that is far from being the case.

Israeli "settlements" is a funny euphemism for Military Outpost.

That's what they're designed for, to house large numbers of reservists and their families and IDF material/equipment to be quickly mobilised in the event of war.

All this nonsense about Kibbutzs being collective "farming communities" is a fanciful cover for their real purpose, to keep an eye on bordering Palestinian communities and provide ideal staging grounds for the IDF to mobilise within right within sight of the West Bank/Gazan borders.

There are additional 100 or so unrecognized settlements, referred to in the media as “outposts.” The 16 settlements built in the Gaza Strip and three settlements in the northern West Bank were dismantled in 2005 during implementation of the "disengagement plan."

As part of the regime, Israel has stolen thousands of dunams of land from the Palestinians. On this land, Israel has established dozens of settlements in which hundreds of thousands of Israeli civilians now live. Israel forbids Palestinians to enter and use these lands and uses the settlements to justify numerous violations of Palestinian rights, such as the right to housing, to earn a living, and freedom of movement. The sharp changes Israel made to the map of the West Bank make a viable Palestinian state impossible as part of the right of the Palestinian people to self-determination.

The settlers, on the other hand, benefit from all rights given to citizens of Israel who live inside the Green Line, and in some instances, even additional rights. The great effort Israel has expended in the settlement enterprise – financially, legally, and bureaucratically – has turned the settlements into civilian enclaves within an area under military rule and has given the settlers a preferred status. To perpetuate this unlawful situation, Israel has continuously violated the Palestinians’ human rights.

There are currently 121 Israeli settlements and approximately 102 Israeli outposts built illegally on Palestinian land occupied by Israel in 1967. All of these settlements and outposts are illegal under international law and have been condemned by numerous United Nations Security Council resolutions. Israeli outposts are considered illegal under Israeli law.

These are the obstacles to true peace.

Until every settlement is dismantled you can forget about anything remotely resembling a two-state solution.

You can't have a two-state entity that's filled with miniature Israel "state-within-a-state" enclaves all over Palestinian land. It just defies the purpose of setting up clear borders and exclusions of Israeli/Palestinian land because Israelis will still be sitting illegally within Palestinian territory.

Yes, that was 3... of the more than 100 Israeli settlements sitting within PNA territory.

That's one small step for Israel, one token step for peace.
