Shortly after midday on 16 January 1958, a series of photographs were taken from a ship anchored off Trindade Island, about 650 miles from the coast of Brazil. The photographer, a Brazilian named Almiro Barauna, claimed to have seen a dark grey ‘object’ approach the island, fly behind a mountain peak and then turn around and head back the way it came, disappearing at high speed over the horizon.
The object glittered and was surrounded by a green mist, and it displayed an undulating motion, changing to a ‘tilted position’ as it passed over the island. On board the ship with Barauna were some 300 other crew, and around 50 of them are claimed to have seen the object.

The photographs have been examined by numerous organisations over the years, and nearly all of them have concluded that the photographs were not faked.

Other separately located witnessess:

In October 1957 the Brazilian Navy set up a small scientific base on the unoccupied island, where oceanographic and meteorological research would be conducted in connection with the International Geophysical Year. Starting early the next month, instrument-bearing weather balloons were launched daily.
They were designed to explode in the upper atmosphere, releasing the instrument packages which would parachute to earth to be retrieved by the researchers.By the end of the month base personnel were reporting silvery UFOs which seemed to be monitoring the balloons’ movements.

On January 1,1958, at 7:50 A.M., the passage of a bright point of light, like a mirror reflecting sunlight, was observed by the entire garrison.
The next evening a round object with an orange glow circled the Navy tow ship Triunfo traveling off the Bahian coast 400 miles from Trindade. As the crew watched, the UFO executed sudden right-angle turns and at other times hovered near the ship. The sighting lasted for 10 minutes.

The most fantastic event occurred on the sixth. The base’s chief officer, Cmdr. Carlos A. Bacellar, had just overseen the launching of a weather balloon into a morning sky clear of everything but a single large cumulus cloud at 14,000 feet. Inside the radio cabin Bacellar listened to the signals the balloon emitted as it ascended. Suddenly those signals inexplicably diminished, then went dead.

When Bacellar went outside to investigate, he saw nothing out of the ordinary, at least at first. The balloon was ascending normally—until it came directly below the cloud, at which point it seemed to be sucked abruptly upward. For the next 10 minutes it remained out of sight and inside the cloud. Finally, when it reappeared, it was above the cloud and devoid of the instrument package.

Soon a silvery object emerged from behind the cloud. As it moved slowly from the southwest to the east, a technician gazing through a theodolite spotted it and alerted the commander, who viewed it briefly through binoculars, then through a sextant.Crescent-shaped and bright white in color, the object reversed course at one point and remained in sight for some time before it entered a cloud bank .

The photographs:

Later [16JAN58], at 12:15 P.M., as the Almirante Saldanha sat anchored off the south coast of Trindade and prepared for a return trip to Rio de Janeiro,48 crew members and passengers spotted an object approaching the island. Among the witnesses was Almiro Barauna, a civilian who had been brought along because of his skill in underwater photography. Barauna gave this account to João Martins of the magazine 0 Cruzeiro:

I had my Rolleiflex 2.8-model E, which was kept inside an aluminum box for protection against the corrosive effects of water and salt. I had left my Leica with a telephoto lens in my cabin a few minutes before. The deck was full of sailors and officers. Suddenly Mr. Amilar Vieira and [retired Air Force] Capt. [José Teobaldo] Viegas called to me, pointing to a certain spot in the sky and yelling about a bright object which was approaching the island.

At this same moment, when I was still trying to see what it was, Lt. Homero [Ribeiro] — the ship’s dentist—came from the bow toward us, running, pointing to the sky and also yelling about an object he was sighting. He was so disturbed and excited that he almost fell down after colliding with a cable. Then I was finally able to locate the object, by the flash it emitted. It was already close to the island.

It glittered at certain moments, perhaps reflecting the sunlight, perhaps changing its own light — I don’t know. It was coming over the sea, moving toward the point called the Galo Crest. I had lost 30 seconds looking for the object, but the camera was already in my hands, ready, when I sighted it clearly silhouetted against the clouds. I shot two photos before it disappeared behind Desejado Peak. My camera was set at speed 125, with the aperture at f/8, and this was the cause of an overexposure error, as I discovered later.

The object remained out of sight for a few seconds— behind the peak— reappearing bigger in size and flying in the opposite direction, but lower and closer than before, and moving at a higher speed. I shot the third photo. The fourth and fifth ones were lost, not only because of the speed the saucer was moving, but also for another reason: in the confusion produced as a result of the sighting, I was being pulled and pushed by other persons also trying to spot the object and, as a consequence, photographed the sea and the island only—not the object. It was moving again toward the sea, in the direction from which it had come, and it appeared to stop in mid-air for a brief time. At that moment I shot my last photo (the last on the film). After about 10 seconds, the object continued to increase its distance from the ship, gradually diminishing in size and finally disappearing into the horizon.

The object was gray, metallic, and solid-looking, though surrounded by a greenish haze or mist. With a ring running through its midsection, it resembled a flattened version of the planet Saturn.

No sign of hoax:

In 1978 an Arizona-based group, Ground Saucer Watch (GSW), which specialized in analysis of purported UFO photographs (and which had rejected most as phony), subjected good-quality prints to a computer-processing technique, focusing on edge enhancement, color-contouring, picture-cell distortion, and digitizing. GSW’s specialists came to these conclusions:

The UFO image is over 50 feet in diameter. The UFO image in each case reveals a vast distance from the photographer/camera. The photographs show no signs of hoax (i.e., a hand-thrown or suspended model). The UFO image is reflecting light and passed all computer tests for an image with substance. The image represents no known type of aircraft or experimental balloon. Digital densitometry reveals a metallic reflection. We are of the unanimous opinion that the Brazilian photos are authentic and represent an extraordinary flying object of unknown origin.

Nice post! S+F for you.

Very interesting read, I didn't know about the events of the 6th, when the balloon has been "kidnapped" and removed his instruments! That's very interesting!!

Great work S & F

I love it when people say there is no good evidence. Here you have good testimony and good photographic proof. This was back in the day when people did not have photshop and most of the "experts" cant thoroughly debunk it.

From the photos presented it does look like a working vehicle unlike others that just show a smooth outer hull this one shows some openings that maybe some sort of intake system or who knows what the darker spots are for.

What I think people who are serious in this field should do is try and find similar craft that were photographed miles and years apart. To see if they can be shown to be identical from completely different sources maybe that way we can prove that in those cases they are from a specific race of beings.

Faking photographs has been done for a very, very long time. It's interesting that Almiro Barauna, the professional photographer of the Trinidad UFO, is known to have engaged in just such activities.

I have to say that regardless of the testimony, I've not liked this particular case. The photos just scream "fake" to me, not that I have some special insight or anything, I just can't get past the pics.

Interesting post! However, after seeing a video on a guy who made some ufo photos on his own and they were also taken to specialists who could find no tampering I just find pictures, especially ones done nowadays, to be impossible to be fully believed.

clipmarks.com...

www.ufo.se...

I just find it hard to believe anything anymore that has to do with photos or video evidence. Just look at the Billy Meier photos... just about any serious UFOologist agrees they are fake, but are uncertain as to how he fakes them.

So now I take every photo with a grain of salt and look at them much like I look at Bigfoot and Lochness photos... just as entertainment. What other choice do I have?

Unfortunately there is NO GOOD EVIDENCE. Never will be. Since all photos and vids can be tampered with. (see my previous post above). Just because they didn't have photoshop doesn't mean that these photos couldn't be faked. You can't, and shouldn't, have blind faith when it comes to UFO photos. I'm not trying to dog you, I also felt the same way as you before... my biggest belief was in the Trent photos. Photo analysis showed no trickery for 50 years and now people are saying they were faked.
Again, please watch this video and you may understand better how I was disillusioned by it all.

Fake or not - looks like some kind of Northrop Stealth Bomber type thing to me - just shot at an odd angle - maybe some kind of blended wing prototype?

And the green smoke - well - maybe a mirage - or fata morgana - from the change in air temperature caused by the engine emissions. Maybe refracting the colour of the ocean or greenery from the island itself.

It looks like the images are taken from different angles.
The side view kinda reminds me of a wraith dart from stargate atlantis.

That's definitely a ship of some sort. Could be an experimental craft from the US.

Of course! Its the SR-71 predecessor, according to Fox news today, and a couple of ex area-51 employees, that's what all the UFO sightings were... this 'oxcart' ? SR-71 prototype...I mean, that's JUST what this looks like to me! lol

I apologize if it seems a little OT..but it just kills me, people are trying to do legitimate research, and despite all the evidence (good or bad) FOX comes up with crap like they did today. And frankly, I think (at fox/msm).. How obvious can you be at perpetrating disinformation.

s&f - ty for the pictures and info, always enjoy the efforts and opinions from this thread

Alienmojo So now I take every photo with a grain of salt and look at them much like I look at Bigfoot and Lochness photos... just as entertainment. What other choice do I have?

Exactly...
The first thing I started to do with my first ever copy of Photoshop a long time ago...was putting 'flying saucers' in landscape pictures...I always dreamed of doing this when I had my own computer.

None of the results ever pleased me enough, but I guess a lot of people also did this and their results are being studied as we speak.

So ever since 'ordinary people' are able to have PC-Power at home I look at photos with in mind that it could be faked.

Scary...but true. What is real and what isn't? When it comes to photography...

After talking with a skilled member on ATS these are the highest rez pics available to knowledge....www.ceticismoaberto.com...

Also it is pretty much up in the air on this one,the questionable past of the photographer is a major drawback obviously.

Thanks for the link, yes i saw it: eh analog imageering is not for me: Jeff Ritzmann is the man when it comes to analog imageering. All i know for sure is that they are controversial mostly because of the author's background, more than because of some technical reason: besides, an analog image could have been faked in several different very hard to spot ways:
Here you will find the best scans available on the web (as far as i know)
[Linked above]

It is literally plenty of analysis all over the web, and no conclusions seem to have been reached: but i guess that Jeff, for example, consers them "compelling".
The fact that Almiro Barauna faked, before the alleged sighting, ufo photos is not very positive, but proves nothing: the take of many researchers are positive, including hyneck
www.cohenufo.org...

Here are the first print scans...www.ceticismoaberto.com...

There has to be also a rebuttal to the claims that there were no witnesses, if I'll find it i will send you a link.

It's a controversial case, but i would be unable to add anything to what has already been made.

Well I fear this is one of those that is truly 'unsolvable' and must be jotted down as 'unexplained'IMO.

Well I hope this helps,take care all!~JKrog

Phage, thanks for the reply-it addresses this point at the link below:

At the time of the event, Barauna had had a previous involvement with the subject of UFOs. In 1953, he did refute the authenticity of the alleged UFO photographs taken by Ed Keffel at a place known as Barra da Tijuca.
In so doing he had prepared photographs which demonstrated how such a hoax could be perpetrated. The well known die hard but unsuccessful debunker, scientist Dr. Menzel, has used Barauna’s debunking article to cast dispersions on Barauna, presenting him as a professional hoaxer. Barauna, he said, had first photographed a model UFO in his home and later double-exposed the same roll of film with pictures of the open sky. However, a 1978 examination by an independent laboratory using digital photo analysis ruled out such tampering. Not only did this rethoric convert Barauna's status from debunker to hoaxer, but of course it fails to address the 40 some visual witness. It is precisely the credibility of the 47 crew members of the Brazilian naval vessel Almirante Saldanha that makes the Trindade photographs so important.

"It was not a balloon, nor something operated by remote contol, the object that appeared in the island of Trinidad".
Statement by Commandant Paulo Moreira Da Silva

Careful studies have been made for the Navy - The team of technicians of the Aerophotogrametric Service of "Cruzeiro do Sol" signed a declaration that they found the negative of the flying saucer to be normal, with no evidence of any fraud - the study and the conclusion will be sent to the National Security Council

PROOF OF THE "FLYING SAUCER" - With the testimony of all the crew of the school-ship Admiral Saldanha, the photographer Almiro Barauna obtained four photographs of the "flying saucer," when it flew above the island of Trindade. In the photo, not showing double exposure, a strange device can be seen evolving around Desejado Peak.

Rio De Janeiro, Feb. 25 -—The Brazilian Navy Ministry vouched today for the authenticity of the photographs of a "flying saucer" taken recently aboard the Navy survey ship Almirante Saldanha.

A Navy Ministry statement said the pictures were made by photographer Almiro Barauna in the presence of a large number of seamen while the ship was cursing off Trinidade Island, 700 miles off the port of Vitoria, Espirito Santo State.

Navy Minister Admiral Antonio Alves Camara said after meeting with President Juscelino Kubitschek in the summer Presidential Palace at Petropolis, that he also vouched personally for the authenticity of the pictures.

"The navy has a great secret which it cannot divulge because it cannot be explained," the Minister said.

On the January 16, the Brazilian War Navy photographed a flying disc on the Island of Trinidade. In a news article effort, Correio da Manhã is printing here some of the photos harvested in the occasion, on board of the school-ship "Admiral Saldanda," who was on duty for the Direction of the Hydrography of the Navy there, in cooperation with the works of the Internation Geophysical Year.
They are the first photographs of a flying disc that appear with official seal. The photographs were taken by cameraman Almiro Baraúna, who was under contract with the Military Navy.
In all the copies, the disc is seen clearly, as it settled on the top of Trindade, having elevated itself at an incredible speed and having carried out maneuvers during some minutes.
Officers and sailors have distinguished the disk with their naked eyes, and were able to verify the existence of two protuberances on it, one on the superior part and another one in the bottom part. As for the calculations, which were done using the distance between the ship and the island, the different photographic sequences and the displacement of the disc in relation to the rocks, it was concluded that its speed would be at the very least of twenty thousand to forty thousand kilometers per hour. At this speed, any device manufactured with materials known here so far would suffer immediate combustion due to the friction with the air, something that did not happen to the photographed object.
It is strange to note that the Navy kept absolute secrecy on the case; exactly now, they seem pledged in keeping silent, refusing to state anything officially and refusing to even confirm the photos and the testimonies of the crew of the "Admiral Saldanda."

Excerpt from link:

There are enough UFO cases who have resisted all the attacks of the self-appointed debunkers. Interstingly enough, this kind of sightings are rarely mentioned in modern literature and in the mass media, and are not mentioned anymore by debunkers once the debunking has failed.

Although the Trindade Island photographs are some of the most famous in the world among serious ufologists, they are still not considered to provide any kind of proof about the UFO phenomenon by the skeptics.
Despite their potential probatory value for the reality of the UFO phenomenon, despite the richness of information of the case, despite the lack of strings, tampering with the negatice, depsite the context of some 40 visual witness, they are being forgotten.

Given the number and the quality of witnesses, given the results of photo analysis, both military and civilian, and given the poor result of the debunkers in offering anything better than absolute nonsense to explain the incident, it seems totally unlikely that these photograph show anything else than a real craft of non terrestrial origin.

www.ufologie.net...

Other UFOs sighted in area:

Federal Deputy Sergio Magalhaes sent a note to the Ministry of the Navy on February 27, protesting the Navy's failure to secure sworn statements from witnesses.
"For the first time in flying saucer history, the phenomenon was attended by large numbers of persons belonging to a military force, which gives these photographs an official stamp. Threats to national security require greater official attention and action," said the deputy.
In the middle of all the publicity, other sighting reports came to light, including one by a naval officer who saw a UFO a month before the sighting from the Almirante Saldanha, off the coast of Espirito Santo. The commanding officer and crew of the Ata Tridente had seen a UFO several days before the Saldanha episode, but had kept the information secret.

Simple questions... Have you ever seen what an ET craft looks like?

Do you know what a creature not of this world would be driving around?

Have you ever been outside this planet?

Have you ever been to another solar system?

Have you ever been contacted abducted and given a tour?

If no:

How do you know it's fake then?
