A Tennessee police officer has been suspended without pay for a single day over delaying a motorist whose mother was dying in the back seat, according to published reports.

Deputy Micah McNinch pulled over Wayne Ables on March 12 after 2 a.m. as he raced his infirmed mother to a hospital just a mile from the site of the stop. McNinch pulled Ables over for expired tags and, as evidenced in new video released to news agencies, kept the pair there while an ambulance and fire truck were en route.

After 11 minutes, the emergency vehicles arrived. The driver had pleaded with the officer to escort them to the hospital a mere five minutes away.

Truly crazy. This mans mother was dying in the back seat from breathing problems and a cop stops them a mile away from the hospital.

The cop calls makes them wait 11 minutes for an ambulance as the driver pleaded for an escort to the hospital that was less than a minute away.

Talk about a power trip! Then the mother dies while waiting for the ambulance and the cop only gets 1 days suspension! How angry would you be if that was your poor mother. Ego FTL.

if it was my mother that cop had better watch his back... some cops are so up there own ass that they cant see whats happening...

This is sick and it had better receive main stream media attention.

After all they covered the story of football player Ryan Moats not being able to see his mother in law one last time. That prevented a man from seeing his mother in law, this cop killed a woman with his ignorance or his ego.

If it had been my mother that cop would be going to the hospital in the ambulance he called. It is ridiculous that cops get away with this kind of crap. Where the hell is the accountability? The asshole was INSTRUMENTAL in this woman's death and he gets a day off?

QFT if it were my mother i would never have stopped in the first place.But obviously this man did not think a cop would be so pig/thick headed and now someone is dead over a speeding infringement.

This case could go either way if he weren't getting away with it already.

That really pisses me off... That cop better hide, I'm sure that guy will be back to at least beat him within an inch of his life... probably worse.

I work in a rural hospital. Several years ago, the hospital pharmacist recieved a call from his mother about nine pm, She was having chest pain and difficulty breathing. Since he lived nearby, he put her in his car, turned on his flashers and started driving her to the hospital. It was about 15 miles to the hospital so he was hitting speeds of 90 to 100 miles an hour. Of course as state trooper got behind him. Instead of bowing to TPTB, he just kept going.
When he got to the hospital, the trooper started yelling at him about not stopping. He just said, "My mother is having chest pain, and I'm not stopping for you, or anyone else. Now go ahead and write the ticket. You can bring it in to me when your done. I'm going to check on her."
Needless to say, he paid on hell of a fine, even though he did go to court and plead his case. But he said he would do it again.
So the answer is just don't stop. And when you get there, tell the cop he's just going to have to come in with you if he wants to write the ticket. You have to take care of family first. If the cops don't appreciate that, the hell with them.

No need. The guy is about to become very wealthy. So hopefully he can have a nice funeral for his mother, and he can get on with his life.

I hope this cop is destroyed from the inside out by his actions. I am not biased against cops. I have many friends who are in uniform and I respect what they do. But there are bad cops out there, and they should be rooted out.

I also believe that police should have training in the Constitution and how it applies to their job...Cops seem to think it is their job to manipulate people into giving up their rights for an arrest quota, in fact, cops are their to help PROTECT your rights.

He shouldnt of stopped. The cops would have cleared the road for him for the pursuit.

Drive right down to the Emergency Room doors and run in if you can or just shout and yell to get some doctors down there while the cops taze, tackle, shoot you.

Poor fool most likely figured if he pulled over and explained to the cops the situation given that the mother was in the car they would have helped him out.

Now he knows better.

this is the sort of thing that makes me happy to live in a small town where everyone knows each other. The police here would have done an escort and would have forgone the ticket in a situation like this.

In this situation, the only answer is clear. You cannot fight the cop cause your mother is dying, that is just a waste of time.

Instead, just get back in the car and keep driving, he can turn on his lights call in a chase, hopefully, if you're super lucky you'll have a news chopper catch up to you as you do slightly over the speed limit en route directly to the hospital. Arrive at the emergency room, grab your mom and run her inside.

The media would have made a joke of the cops. You would likely get away scott-free.

They get exactly what they want from their corporate policy enforcement officers. Trust me.

The Sheriff called this a "learning experience" for the officer, in explanation for the one day suspension.

I wonder if the Sheriff would have felt the same if it had been *his* mother the officer was practicing his judgment on.

Looks like Sheriff Mark Luttrell's position is an elected one. Let's hope the citizens of Shelby County, Tennessee, show Mr. Lutrell how the next election should be a learning experience for him.
