Passport update: Get ready for new rules

www.msnbc.msn.com

Come June 1, you’ll need a government-approved document to enter U.S.

It’s been a long, tortuous path since the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative (WHTI) was unveiled back in 2004. As part of the proposal, a birth certificate and driver’s license would no longer be considered valid ID for travelers (including U.S. citizens) returning from Canada, Mexico, Bermuda or the Caribbean. Instead, a passport or other “WHTI-compliant” document would be required.

Both U.S. Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano and U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton have certified to Congress that we’re ready to go, says Brenda Sprague, deputy assistant secretary of passports. “We’re ready, our colleagues in Canada are ready and I believe the American people are ready.”

oh well no issue here

Sure during an economic crisis it would be great to have some spark in tourism instead of almost blockading it, if you will, but hey this is fine too.

No issue here!

Sounds like travelling to the US will be one day worse than going to Cuba.

This is insanity

oh well, Hilary is saying we are ready so all is well

I will go out on a limb and say that the Canadians will get exempt until further notice.

Keep your eye on Congress and its double standard.

Janet Napolitano is the most incompetent person alive!

Got that out of the way.

MA- yeah if Hilary says we're ready, we must be, undeniable Fact!

I'm so upset about all this politcal BS going on, I just simply find it funny. Like when you have that day were everything goes wrong, then on your way home from work and your car breaks down, but you just laugh, cause you really didn't think it could get worse!

I'm a dual citizen Canadian-American. Wonder how this effects me?

Im a dual citizen as well, only have a US passport, and my Canadian gov. ID... which should be fine I'd assume. Half the time coming to canada they dont even ask for ID.
"citizenship?" Canadian "bring anything with you?" No "ok go ahead"

So would someone explain why this is an issue? I am not being sarcastic but since a passport and/or a visa is required anyway for entry from most countries anyway I don't understand the issue... and I agree Canada will probably be exempt.

Dual citizens will only be able to have 1/2 of their total body mass in the USA at any given time.
