Following the attacks in southern Iraq which killed 68 people, Maj Gen Martin Dempsey stated that 10% of the Iraqi security force actively worked against the coalition forces and another 40% walked off the job.

news.bbc.co.uk...
Gen Dempsey, commander of the US army's 1st Armored Division, told media executives in an interview that he believed popular support for the coalition among Iraqis remained high, though it could not be taken for granted.

But he acknowledged that one in every 10 of the Iraqi security forces trained by the coalition ended up working against the US-led forces.

How high can popular support for the coalition be, if 50% of the men we have trained and armed, to protect against rebels and "insurgents", have abandoned their posts or worked to sabotage the US led military's missions from the inside? Half of the Iraqi police force is not an insignificant number!
I wonder if they were "intimidated" like the military is claiming, or if they just didn't want to fight against their own people, who have now joined the "insurgency".
I often think about how we might react if the shoe were on the other foot.

the truth is slowly coming out, there is no popular Iraqi support for the U.S coalition in Iraq. Our govt and media might try to make it seem so, but the proof is in the pudding as they say.

If these percentages carry over to the Iraqi people as a whole, it not only shows how short-sighted the US government would have been in believing the Iraqi people would stand united once Saddam was removed from power. In other words, this isn't particularly surprising.
