Five children, ages 7 to 16, were found dead in a Graham-area home southeast of Tacoma after their father shot them with a rifle, then later killed himself, Pierce County sheriff’s investigators said Saturday.
Deputies found the children, four in their beds and one in the mobile home’s bathroom, after deputies went to check on their welfare. That welfare check was triggered by a call from a concerned neighbor, a sheriff’s spokesman said.
The home is in the 20400 block of 135th Avenue Court East, between Graham and Orting.
Penny Flansburg, aunt of the children’s mother, Angela Harrison, identified the father as James Harrison and the children as Maxine, Samantha, Heather, Jamie and James.
Auburn police found the father’s body in his still-running car near a mobile home park near the Muckleshoot tribal casino early Saturday morning. The man apparently killed himself with a rifle. But that separate incident didn’t immediately set off any alarm bells with law enforcement. No suicide note was found.
