PRAGUE (AFP) – The United States, Japan and South Korea condemned a North Korean rocket launch, with US President Barack Obama calling it a
"provocative" act amounting to an illegal long-range missile test.
The launch Sunday defied weeks of pressure from the United States and its allies, who had warned it would be an illegal ballistic missile test,
although the North had said it would put a communications satellite into orbit.
"The launch today of a Taepodong-2 missile was a clear violation of United Nations Security Council Resolution 1718, which expressly prohibits North
Korea from conducting ballistic missile-related activities of any kind," Obama said in a statement.
