I recently attended Amelia Island Concours in Florida.

The vehicle below is a custom car built in 1938 by Bohman & Schwartz Custom Coach Builders. It was commissioned for Rust Heinz, heir to Heinz 57 fortune. It was a prototype to be mass produced but Heinz died before it became a reality.

This is obviously a studio shot. The car was there and I have original pix, crowded by spectators. This car has been described as "Art Deco UFO" It also appeared in a movie and was affectionately called "Flying Wombat." I can provide further info if requested.

Notice the "UFO" styling cues. Circa 1938..........Amazing.

I'm obsessed with cars and UFO's. What a great forum.

So anyone have any cars suggesting "other world" styling to share or comments?

Regards.........KK

Sweeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeet! That is too gnarly to simply be a "grocery getter." Hope you get at least get to "Break it in" and take it for it's "Weekly Service." Wink, wink.

I got my spousal unit a ride way too fast for her needs. She complained,
" There's something wrong with my new car, If I lightly mash the gas pedal, it throws me back in the seat." Audi Turbo.

Gosh I adore her so..................

Thanks for sharing.

That thing is real cute. But where would ET put his golf clubs or abductees?

With a top speed of 38, it might take awhile to explore the universe.

0 to 60 in..............never.

It was commissioned for Rust Heinz, heir to Heinz 57 fortune.

The heir to a cannery fortune was named Rust?

They had a sense of humour, those Heinzes.

Not so amazing, really. Classic 'flying saucers' look the way they do because they are the artifacts (albeit mental artifacts) of Americans living during the period in which late Art Deco styles, in particular Streamline Moderne, became a design cliché used in American furniture, household appliances and automotive design. That car is a typical example of the style at its earlier aesthetic peak. The inevitable kitsch period followed at about the time of the flying saucer craze, and accounts for the look of flying saucers. Americans were projecting images of their toasters, kettles, hubcaps, etc. into the sky.

It seems to me--though I'm don't have enough knowledge or interest in the subject to be sure--that UFO sightings in any given period seem to reflect the fashions prevailing in military and consumer technological design during the period.

Wow. I am pleasantly surprised to find this old thread pop back up. Not sure if it is sychronicity, but I just returned from the 2010 Amelia Concours event which was the original inspiration for this thread a year ago. I submit a couple more wacky rides, hope you enjoy!

Soooooooo funny you mention that. Did you ever see the movie Starman? (My total fav ET flick) Jeff Bridges (ET) drives an old Mustang. (not sure of the year) And it has fat tires and a very loud big honking V-8.

He runs a few red lights in it. Awesome if you've never seen it. I promise it won't dissappoint.
