Because the rocket used was designed as a nuclear capable missile. Depending on the warhead it has a range of up to 9000 miles. It's capable of putting a small satellite into a 250 mile orbit.

A satellite pic of the launch has just been released by the US.

You can see it here.

If it was launching a satellite, is the vector right for doing that? It seems a little like it's aimed towards Japan rather than space...

Oh look! The LOCAL NEWS here just showed a video released by North Korea of the missile launching. Along with the release of satellite pictures of the launch.

What did I say the other day? Hmm? Did I not say they would release them? Sure looked real to me.
