I have some co-ordinates of the Northern Territory in Australia where Google Earth has definately put another image over the top of what is supposed to be there. Why would they do this? Are they hiding something?

latitude: 23°50'8.70"S
longitude: 135°37'28.63"E

I would have pasted a picture but I'm only new to Google Earth, sorry guys.

Has anyone else seen things like this on Google Earth?

Yeh exactly, why?
Because its there Earth program, and they could put if they choose pictures of clowns in there.

Thanks for your thoughtful and very helpful contribution to this thread.

Does anyone have any less hostile suggestions?

It's just a layer that's been photographed at a different time to the rest.\

Normally they're in long strips but this one is quite short.

Nothing sus!

(A few interesting links on this article concerning the subject..)

en.wikipedia.org...

There seems to be several places on Google earth where the map data is more or less censored. It's debatable wheter the censorship is good or or bad/needed in some cases.. You could argue that for example in order to prevent terrorism and other criminal activity some imagery should be less detailed or not available at all. I think they censor some places without noticing in order to avoid unwanted attention to that spesific location. As 'map data unavailable' or 'very secret place here!' -sign always raises even more interest..

okay, it makes more sense now, but in the middle of NT near Alice?
It's so desolate out there I didn't think there would be much to cover up.

Thanks for the info guys.

There's nothing there to cover up, like I said the shot was taken at a different time to the others around it.

If you believe that there is something to hide there, why isn't Pine Gap censored? You know, the big secret spy base in the middle of the desert?

You kind of remind me of a desperate cop saying "move along nothing to see here"

Thanks for the info though, I hadn't heard of pine gap before you mentioned it. But if it was so secret would there really be a wikipedia entry about it? I guess it is possible for the photos to be taken at different times. I don't really understand how google earth works yet (as I am new to the program), but I am trying to get up to speed.

Perhaps there are places/things more worth hiding than pine gap though?

Same reason why Area 51 isn't blurred out either I guess...

Zoom out a bit from that area, you'll see more similar image effects all over the place.

Pine gap isnt a secret, very very very well known. It is a millitary installation that you cant go near....what goes on there is secretive, like most of the millitary really.
