A magnitude 7.9 earthquake has struck near Tonga.

The US Geological Survey said the quake struck at a depth of 10km.

Its epicentre was about 210 km south-south-east of the Tongan capital Nuku'alofa.

The quake comes after an undersea volcano has been erupting for days in the region.

A tsunami warning has been issued by the Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre.

The eruption is about 10km from the southwest coast of Tonga's main island of Tongatapu - an area where up to 36 undersea volcanoes are clustered, geologists said. Scientists sailed yesterday to inspect the volcano.
