If you were an American living here in the U.S. between late 2001 and January 15, 2009; you were living in what could be technically described as a Fascist Dictatorship.

Is there proof? Now there is:

President Obama just declassified critical memos written by “President” Bush's lawyer, John Woo, which nullified the Bill of Rights and created a legal dictatorship.

What... you didn't know? Don't be so surprised, truth is the first casualty of war.

You didn't read about this in the news. No wonder. It was classified. Secret. That's right, the documents that gave President Bush dictatorial powers were too sensitive for American citizens to know about. We weren't supposed to know that Bush's legal team had declared him Commander-In-Chief, with the self-awarded right to do anything he wanted to, to anyone he wanted to, for whatever reason he chose. Of course, there was one requirement. Bush would have to call you a terrorist. But once the enemy combatant claim was made, he could do anything he wanted with anyone his military or “intelligence” forces could kidnap – including Americans. That sounds like dictatorial power to me.

noshootfoot.blogspot.com...

Did you really think they'd TELL YOU you were living in a dictatorship? Ha ha! Silly! They'll just classify it and do it anyway!

There's no escaping it, you will never have a real democracy in America. It's too easy to hide things.

I think everyone knows in their sub-concious, already.

What's sick is that it didn't end with the Bush administration, and OMG didn't start with it. It was only more obvious.

OK, I have to call BS here.

The President is the Commander-In-Chief under the US Constitution, not some memo written by a lawyer. Maybe you should read the document. It's available online so forgive me for not posting a link.

Whether you want to admit it or not, President Bush was the President of the United States. If you disagree, then please let me know who was the POTUS for the past 8 years.

The detainees were enemy combatants, there is no magic in that statement. That is how they are classified under the Geneva Conventions. You might want to read those documents as well.

So we are making the leap from a Fascist State to a Socialist State? How cool is that

That is about an opinion from the Attorney Generals Office which holds no weight until tested in court. The Blog is a major exaggeration of the facts. So was the article in Harper's it was taken from.

The number one fact missing is that this opinion only related to Counter-Terrorism activities and nothing else. To leave that fact out makes the author of the Blog and the author of the Harper's story both a little less than honest.

What was being said is that the Bill of Rights does not apply to Terrorists. Poor little guys
All they want to do is blow people up for fun and profit. Send them a sympathy card.

Yeah, he was the President- and he took more power than the constitution grants him.

Would be an improvement, there are countries that are democratic, modern, and socialist.

Wait until you are labeled a terrorist for dissenting with the government. Then you'll want those rights back.

Nothing groundbreaking in the blog, though.

OK. Two things.

Firstly- bluntly - get off the OP's back.

On ATS we debate the post and not the poster. Thats always been the way, and always will be the way.

Secondly, whatever happened to research, because if you follow the link the OP posted, read the article and follow the links off that, you come to a link to this

Memos Reveal Scope of Power Bush Sought in Fighting Terror

So this isn't some "angry blogger making it up" - it has links to a definite news article, in the main stream media.

So now we've sorted that out, how about we discuss the actual story, in the best traditions of ATS, eh?

Thanks, nefermore, for bringing a bit of sense to the debate.

However, an earlier poster is correct in saying that this isn't news, in the sense that the "signing orders" giving Bush dictatorial powers was known at the time, and that anyone he labelled a "terrorist" lost all rights. That Obama declassified the documents is interesting, however.

Is he going to give up those powers? I doubt it. More likely he'll ride the continuing wave of hope to try and retain them because people, bless 'em, think he can be trusted.

On the broader question about living in a fascist state, of course... it was obvious from 9/11 onwards. That was the new burning of the Reichstag, Bin Laden being the new Marinus Van Der Lubbe.

Remember that Mussolini said that "fascism should more properly be called corporatism, marking as it does the merger of state and corporate power."

And in Italy, at least the trains ran on time...

But of course if you want a bit of a shock, look on the back of any dime, and you'll see a representation of the fasces, the Roman symbol of authority - a bunch of sticks tied together. That is, quite literally, the word and concept from which fascism took its name.

Extraordinary, indeed religious reverence, for the leader, whether President or Fuhrer, is one of the giveaways of fascism, and that the US has in spades. How many times do you hear the phrase "he's our commander-in-chief"? Bush was regarded as an idiot until he took office, and then suddenly he became revered far more than an inarticulate fratboy has any right to be. Same for snake-oil salesman Obama. Sure, there's dissent... but there's also, in loyalist quarters, more reverence shown than to a mere average mortal.

I live in a constitutional monarchy, the UK. I used to think the monarchy was pointless, and now I realise it fulfils a psychological function so vital I couldn't see it until I lived in the US in the Bush years: our monarch is like a lightning rod that earths the weird irrational projections that swirl around any country's figurehead. By taking the monarch out of politics, we can look at our politicians and see them for the grubbing opportunists they truly are.

It is important to note that the article cited by the OP contained the following words, that he/she omitted:

He concluded that in wartime, the President was freed from the constraints of the Bill of Rights with respect to anything he chose to label as a counterterrorism operations inside the United States.

In wartime. Want to know what some other presidents have done in time of war? Look into what Lincoln and FDR did, for starters.

That was a war he chose. I think the more sensible analogy is to look at what Hitler did in time of war.

Of course there is no democracy -- the founding fathers saw it as a danger!

The US is a republic. Always has been, always will be, unless the socialists have their way.

You should actually click the links that are in the blog. They point to stories from the mainstream media.

Maybe you don't like the mainstream media, which would be fine, but you can't accuse the person who wrote the blog of just making it up.
