Today a South African newspaper reports that "Aids is killing so many politicians in southern Africa that their deaths are threatening the ability of governments to function properly". See this thread: ATS Thread

How can he justify making such a statement? Did he think before he opened his mouth?

The old man is suffering from dementia. Nothing about that statement makes any sense. I agree with some of the other sentiments, in that he wants to overpopulate Africa and/or let the innocent kids starve to death.

I thought we were passed the time where we listened to the church. I mean wasnt that like back in the 1500's that they had a say. Why is it that the church thinks they are masters in science, medicine, and dictatorships.
I think the Catholic church needs to take a step back and really look at what is goin on the planet.

You people are all anti-Catholic *snip*.

Let's see, condoms are not 100% effective, abstinence is.
Condoms break and who thinks that millions of uneducated Africans are gonig to use condoms properly anyways?

It's simple, although unrealistic: If everyone waited to have sex until they were married and were completely faithful to their spouse, AIDS or any other STD WOULD NOT EXIST!

Now, I know all the porno addicts on this site couldn't fathom a life without constant sexual stimulation, but Africa is an entirely different place.

As for effectiveness of this method, look at Uganda. Their AIDS rate has plummeted, partially due to condom use, but MAINLY due to teens putting off sex until later in life, and the reduction of the # of sexual partners.

But you go on believing the UN contraception/condom bull#.

This is another argument that back up what many peoples think of the church in general : Disconected from reality.

Even more disconnected since this guy became pope.

LOL ... ok .. I am a Catholic so I'm allowed to joke about the Pope.

Imagine.. in their nice luxurious meeting room at the Vatican, 20 top Cardinals and the Pope sit around a table sipping their wine staring at a box of Trojans. One cardinal is making a balloon animal, another has one up to his elbow, another has a Magnum with a shocked look on his face... Unsure what they do, how to use it or simply grasp the concept behind it... they right it off as evil!

Point of the story.

Don't take condom advice from an 80 something year old man who's never used one.

Well if its say 1649 then Id say SPOT ON....

Really the Catholic Church should stick to what it knows best: Persecution and musical parishes for pedofile priests.

For me, I don't think it has anything to do with Anti-Catholic. It has to do with ignorance and control. People are going to have sex. Teens are going to have sex.
It's natural, no matter if you are 18 or 63. It is ignorant to suggest that the use of condoms will make contracting hiv worse. Condoms help stop the spread of hiv.

My kids can come to me for condoms and they know it. I'd much rather my kid be protected against hiv, than be ignorant thinking, "My kid won't have sex until......." because I know that's hogwash.

Does the Catholic church considered hiv a punishment for people who have unprotected sex? This is the year 2009, isn't it?

Edit to say: After thinking about it, it does have to do with the Catholic church. Who else in their right mind would suggest something like this? And what about the poor people who follow the pope's words?

Ask any one here who's known me, I stick up for the Church even though I disagree with a lot of what they do.. but some stuff honestly you can't bs around with.

Abstinence was a great idea, save sex till marriage yadda yadda yadda. At a Catholic school that's the extent of your sexual education "This is a penis, don't use it!" ..

Well that worked great until I was 15 and found out sex was much, much, much better than no sex! .. and having never had any real education involving "protection", I never bothered. 15 and stupid. It wasn't until my father threatened me with severe bodily harm if I got her knocked up did I smarten up.

The Church plays the card "just don't do it" .. and that worked great when back in the day at 16 you where getting married and having kids and planning your funeral by 30. In today's world, especially the sheltered children of the religious world are dangerously naive regarding sex, and quite often end up worse off, much worse off, than if they had an open and honest discussion. It's not advocating sex, it's simply saying hey, you're Human, you will make bad decisions, and if you do, here's your options and here is your consequence.

Putting a veil over a kids eyes regarding an issue that will dominate their life from 14-ever is ignorant to an extreme.. if only the Church saw the damage they do..

I can see why he would say that.

Giving them condoms to combat AIDS might give them a false sense of protection. While it might cut down on births and STDs, it could also encourage them to have more sex without the fear of the consequences.

Condoms can easily be compromised under the best of conditions and Africa, notably the under developed parts (problem areas), are far from the best of conditions.

You sound just as foolish as the senile old pope. How can you possibly expect everyone to only take one sexual partner in their lifetimes? ONE?

It's simply not natural. You are expecting to repress the sexual desires of every human being alive? Advocating safe sex, as opposed to abstinence, is the BEST compromise for people who are looking to have fulfilling lives, while remaining healthy.

What bull#? That condoms can help prevent the spread of AIDS? Or that contraception can help prevent unwanted and unplanned pregnancies?

Grow up.

only reason a person wouldn't use condoms is if they think it feels fake or they don't want to have a child.

Don't worry, no one really takes his opinions seriously.

If only that were true my friend.1.1 billion Catholics. Some of them actually believe the silly old bugger.

The pope should be tried for crime against humanity for saying things like that. Everybody should protest by sending a letter to their church and ask to be removed from it. I did that years ago and I am proud of it !

I didn't know it was NATURAL to wrap a latex sheath around your knob...

What IS natural is the urge to PROCREATE. Condoms eliminate that aspect of it. There is a reason why pleasure and procreation are combined in the act of sex. You want to have your cake and eat it too. Don't be surprised when there is a global backlash due to it.

No, that condoms and contraception are the solution to so many of the worlds problems.

Look at it this way:

Who are the people who typically use condoms and contraception in the world?

They are usually educated, white and Asian people (whether its Americans, Europeans, Russians or Japanese). Look at what's happening those people now. They are reproducing at rates FAR BELOW replacement, at levels NEVER SEEN BEFORE.

Now, who are the people who AREN'T using condoms and contraception?

They are the uneducated, the Muslims, and the Africans.

Don't believe me, check it out. These are stats from the WHO and CIA:

en.wikipedia.org...

Grow up.

I did. I got a wife and have natural sex with her. And its a million times more fulfilling than sleeping with a random girl, *SNIP*. See how fulfilling your life going about it your way.

Why?

The people that will actually listen to him won't be using condoms OR having risky sex.

The people that won't listen to him will probably use condoms anyways.

What harm has he caused?

Not me. I'm a Catholic and used to be an altar boy. When I want to listen to the Pope I do, and when I don't want to I don't.

Yeesh. Pope John Paul was a pretty cool guy he had some viewpoints I still don't agree with but he was in a lot of ways a good person.

The new guy is crapping on his grave. Pope Benedict... nice name.

Reminds me of something I heard a bit ago that stated that condoms would actually increase the chances of getting a STD.

I'm happy to be excluded from that club.. I was raised as a catholic by reasonably strict parents but as I got older and opened my eyes a bit more I became sickened by the hypocrisy that was prevalent throughout the church. Don't get me wrong the catholic faith does have it's beauty and there are are a LOT of very decent human beings who live a good hearted life based on their catholic upbringing. I myself consider myself to be a pretty decent human and would go out of my way to help a friend in need but that said I think that this pope is as sadly misguided as all the previous popes from now until the 1920's or whenever it was that they stuck there heads into a prelubed bucket..

en.wikipedia.org... (this may help a bit)

The pope would do well to take heed from the great Surgeon Sage

cheers
