Ok you win. I'll definately have to give you that one. Most Americans are rude a**holes and the few Brits i've met have been polite and friendly.

I think it depends, What will it be used for?

Is it for self defense?
Hunting?
Long range practice?

This will help you make a better decision, not all guns are created equal

(I'm a fan of hand guns, so if your answer is: For self defense, I suggest a revolver - or a 9mil - and plenty of practice.)

Another thing you may want to consider (and apologies in advance if this has been mentioned already - I only just skimmed the thread) is adrenaline. A handgun, unless you've trained extensively with it and put a ton of rounds downrange, is likely to be difficult to fire accurately under stress. Short and sweet: adrenaline makes a lot of people shake.

I would definitely go for a shotgun not only for the above reasons dealing with over-penetration, but because it has a very wide spread so you're far less-likely to miss in close quarters. Swing it up, pull the trigger and you're almost sure to hit your target unless you're facing in entirely the wrong direction.

If however, you're planning to visit the range enough that your load, sight, and pull becomes integrated into muscle memory then by all means pick up a pistol. Consider the reality of the situation before making a decision though - a buddy of mine had a break-in a few years ago, held the man at gunpoint until the police arrived but he was shaking so badly and the adrenaline was so intense that while he was perfectly willing to pull the trigger he wasn't sure if he would have been physically able to. Just something to take into account.

Also, major props on convincing your girl to let a gun into the apartment. Not an easy feat by any stretch!
