I've been laid off for some time now. 6 months. Reno unemployment is at 11 % and quickly rising. We're heavily dependent on small businesses for employment. The Gaming industry in Reno is not as concentrated as it is in Vegas. Charter Communications filed for bankruptcy, gaming, coffee-shops, boutiques, traveling, hunting, and camping stores are closing. Everyone has pretty much put in a hiring freeze. I don't have a car so the jobs in Stead, and Fernley are not an option. It's thirty miles away, and they too are starting to feel the pinch.

Nevada is getting hit pretty hard. At least my significant other still has her job. And business is up for her, though she's working a little harder than the 200% she already puts in. I don't know. It does look good right now. But I will find something. It's not that we're totally under water, we don't own a home so we don't have that hanging over our heads, but things are getting quite a bit more difficult. We both wanted to go back to school, and to buy a car, but survival for the time being is paramount. So we're saving what there may be.

None the less, life is good. I never lose sight of what I have, even if sometimes I may take it for granted.

I guess the age of the fat over weight generation just changed to the underfed majority. I am scared to death with all this change, I could go on and on why, but you are members of this site and know as well as I that it was engineered to knock us down. I always wondered how our world would fall apart, never imagined it to be a planned extended slow bleed out for all of our class, i say the people who made this happen are sitting somewhere drinking a hellishly expensive glass of booze just waiting to take the rest. I just don't know , trying to keep my head on the level, but its like the whole world is falling apart.

I read detroit is 21 percent unemployed and people are begging to stay in jail than live on the streets. Predictions are that the rate will double in the next month there, average price of a home in detroit now is 21k.

I guess some kind of rebirth will come out from all this loss, but how and when, what else do we have to experience.

O.K. suck it up. The market rebounded, you can go look for a job now. Things will be better................sometime. I've been outta work for 3yrs but I learned that this must be what is to be done now. Age and responsibilities make the difference, but if you land up broke and old you have all this time to plan on finally doing the things you never had timed to do, and I've decided not to ever go back. When they find out I've escaped into free-thinker's paradise what will they do? Will I be fined or imprisoned for free-thinking, at the "everyone must be suffered to death world"? I don't expect to live that long that some ignomatic society came to bear more, on everyone, but this is how I feel. I should be worried about housing, gas prices, financial lost, but I fooled them I planned to be broke at this time, not dead!

I feel for you, suffered, but if you don't get back in then you'll be out, but not dead!

Im from Alberta too. I was laid off in January. Nobody is hiring here. I know how to seek work, yet no one returns calls. Its not the same here at all.

On Radio 1 today I caught an interview about a company in Alberta that needs labourers really bad. They say they have too many jobs and not enough people willing to do it. I'd like to learn about these.

In the mean time, im trying to learn about alternative ways to just make petty cash. I just want enough to pay the utilities, fuel the car, pay the rent, etc. I want to save, but now I'm just striving for survival level.

I was a lucky one. I was a contract manager for Delphi in Ohio. I Deployed overseas for all of 2008, when I got back in country I found out that my entire contract had been cut due to downsizing and the position no longer exists. What a great homecoming. I have been unemployed since. I have 19 years of management under my belt and last week I had to apply at Kmart as a meatcutter. My future's so bright I have to wear shades.

I've got about a dozen years of I.T. experience. Back before the first bubble burst I was making 65k a year as an admin.
Currently I'm unloading trucks two days a week for a local retailer and bringing home about $125 a week, and it took me a few months to even find this little job.

I was self employed for a while, selling magnetic jewelry, but the web sales have dried up to less than $20 a month, and the flea market where we did most of our business turned into a ghost town. However you can still buy some of my remaining stock at:
MagneticBreeze.com... just in case you want to help a brother out.

I had two freakin' offices, No way they could live without me.

It turned out I wasn't near as important as I thought I was. At least they didn't have security escort me out of the building like every one else.

That was a month ago. For the first time in decades I didn't have a job. I filed for unemployment and it was more than I expected. Then the Obama stimulus package kicked in and I got a raise in my unemployment and I realized I was in pretty darn good shape for someone who's sitting on their bum all day.

I LOVE THE DEMOCRATIC PARTY!

Here I've been a Libertarian all my life and with the voting in of the Democrats I can sit on my booty and get paid damn near the same amount as I was getting working 40 hours a week.

Don't take that wrong, I meet my obligations. I make the three job contacts I'm required to make each week. I also stay up till midnight, sleep till ten in the morning and spend way too much time on ATS.

This economy should have tanked years ago. I'm having a great time.

I got pneumonia in January which thoroughly kicked my hiney. Darn near killed me. Work couldn't wait for me to recover and told me they wouldn't accept my Dr.'s note so they took me off the schedule. Haven't put me back on, either.

I tried to apply for unemployment but was denied. My work had said I was a no call, no show which is grounds for termination. I argued that there was no reason to call or show if I wasn't scheduled to work. Apparently I was supposed to crawl off my death bed, get dressed for work and drive in to see if they might need me there infecting everyone else that day.

I'm just disgusted enough with the whole situation that I've decided not to go back to work. Signed my paid for house over to my grown daughter. Am selling off anything I have that will fetch a price and am stocking up on things I will need as I roll down the open road shouting, "kiss my bugged out a**!"

No more taxes from me. No more being treated like a disposable commodity. I'll take my knowledge, skills, training and experience and use them to benefit me for a change. Now THAT'S change I can live with!

I work in an upscale private club, and have been laid off since the middle of March. I am lucky though. I go back next week, and am eligible for unemployment. I really hope Obama can create new jobs, because being laid off sucks.

My wife die in Jan. She had been misdiagnosed and by the time they figured out what was her problem it was to late. Would have been 23 years in two weeks.

I am retired military living here in SoCal with all the frigging "undocumented workers" as Madame Pelosi calls them. Rent is out of this world, jobs suck or require you to be bilingual and traffic is a bear.

My friend and I decided we're bailing out of here and going to Las Vegas. There is plentiful new housing for rent there cheap. We figured we can live in a nice place there for less than one here just on what we make in retirement from the military.

Plenty of security jobs there too.

Wish us luck.

Lately, I've been getting laid off in Oct of every election year (04/08). I am a corporate recuiter with 10 yrs of exp and I am still with the company that laid me off in Oct 08. My current salary is a mere fraction of what it used to be. I'm just lucky that my wife has a great job in healthcare and puts up with me. I'd also like to add that nothing ticks me off more than morons who have a decent paying job ($40K+) and do nothing but complain. Last time I've had a job that pays this little is when I was fresh out of college about 20 years ago. I'd also like that Madoff butthole to go to a real jail and get butt raped on a daily basis but that is a topic for some other thread.

I'm real sorry about your wife. My sympathies to you.

Our military retirement is the one thing I know we can depend on. If we didn't have that we'd be s.o.l. I'm glad my hubby went the 20 yrs to get it.

Good luck in your move and I hope you find a job and a home.
