Maybe it's just me, but in reading this article, people seem more interested in the phenomena rather than the causalities it could bring. If this kind of geological activity was happening in the United States, it would be all over the news and people would be worried. We wouldn't have universities studying it for the sake of information gathering but rather trying to save the population from disaster. It's certainly interesting, but to me, it seems that because it's the Republic of Congo is one of the poorer countries in this world and not of much significance, such activity is merely regarded as "scientific" but maybe I'm interpreting things wrong...

Well, yeah. When the scientists say this volcano could create a new Yellowstone, then that's a big deal. That would mean it a super volcano is forming. Funk that!

If that happens though, it will have global effects, so it's sort of a big deal anyways no matter where you are. However, the when is an important part. It may not happen for a very long time.

I wonder if this has anything to do with the Magnetosphere storys appearing the past few days?

We have Coronal Holes on the sun affecting this...maybe this core plume has a effect as well???

Scientist are saying an eruption is imminent now

news.mobile.msn.com...

Scientists found evidence of intense volcanic activity - including tremors, pools of lava and plumes of smoke - at two volcanoes near a major city in eastern Congo, and said some residents had fled for fear of an eruption.

The volcanoes in the central African nation could be about to erupt, threatening Goma, which has a population of more than half a million people, scientists said Thursday. They made their observations on visits to the two volcanic peaks of Nyiragongo and Nyamulagira.

"The eruption could be tomorrow, or the day after - or at any other time," said Dieudonne Wafula, the head of Goma's Volcanological Observatory.

The Nyiragongo crater is only 11 miles (18 kilometers) north of Lake Kivu, where Goma is located. Wafula estimates that 1.3 million people are threatened by the two volcanoes, including the residents of Goma, the villages surrounding it and the inhabitants of Gisenyi, located across the Rwandan border.

"The villagers living near Nyiragongo have already left their villages after they saw the volcano shake today. They thought it was already erupting," Wafula said.

He said government agencies and Red Cross workers were making preparations, although the country's infrastructure has been destroyed by decades of civil war.

Nyiragongo is listed as one of the eight most dangerous volcanoes in the world and its lava can flow at up to 24 miles (40 kilometers) per hour, according to Wafula.

It would appear that the news, locally-what there is of it, is getting the people aware that devastation could occur, and people a doing what can be done...getting away from the possibility, or not. As in the case of many naturally occurring events, some people are stubborn enough to think that it will/ could not affect their lives.

The geoscientist viewpoint is that what is learned through ongoing investigations can produce viable information to create early warning systems, for one. History is filled with examples of the lack of these systems, and it is not because the events were not observable, but rather the means of information gathering were not adequate. Ignorance of the effects of the events, has evolved into study of similar events to raise the awareness of the less knowledgeable.

Examples abound, but the one that comes readily to mind is Pompeii. Knowing what is known today, there were warning signs of an eminent eruption, and I am sure these signs were noticed, but not interpreted to mean devastation. And when the volcano erupted, people died in their tracks.

The geoscientists hope to raise the awareness to diminish the loss of life.
