For years Birmingham Alabama charged an Occupational Tax. Simply put if you work in Jefferson County you were taxed for it. This tax was found unconstitutional yet they still collect it weekly from anyone working in Jefferson county. They justify this by not spending it. It is just sitting in an account.

Jefferson County is appealing Monday's Circuit Court judge ruling that declared the county's occupational tax illegal. But appealing the judge's ruling isn't the most important thing that must happen. The Legislature can and must step in to save the tax. After all, this mess wasn't of the county's making, but of the Legislature's. And only the Legislature has the power to fix it. Lawmakers, a decade ago, passed a controversial bill repealing the occupational tax with the worst of motivation -- greed and spite. Their act now threatens the county's financial survival

Source

They are billing this as spite full and greedy lawmakers repealed an unconstitutional tax. Now I don't know how many counties if any other pay this but this is absolute proof that governments local not only federal government could care less about us.

We don't have a lotto or legalized gambling in Birmingham but for the last ten or so years people have been trying hard to get it passed. Now the income that comes to the county from gambling and lotteries greatly improve the counties they are in.

So why are they pushing to get an ILLEGAL tax instead of an income source that most people would be more than happy with. WTF :shk:

At least in local government they have a better chance of voting the people out if the citizens really want to make it an issue. We are given puppets who blatantly disregard public opinion in the national elections.

Voting is not the problem. It doesn't matter who you vote for you are voting for the same. Our Republic is doing what all Republics do. Once taken over by the greedy they fall.

This is not so in local elections. People have a great deal of power, if they stop being apathetic. Look at what happened with the trans-Texas corridor in my great state. People inundated their local reps. and it was defeated. It does take a great deal of vigilance though.
