Report Says 1 in 50 U.S. Kids Are Homeless

www.time.com

The National Center on Family Homelessness released a report today that estimates that one in every 50 American children was homeless between 2005 and 2006. That totals roughly 1.5 million kids.

Families with children comprise roughly one-third of the nation's homeless population.

"It's families that were living pretty independently, doing pretty well. And, through just one event, it was, like, a domino effect — if one part of the puzzle breaks off, then everything breaks off,"

This is a new article outlining a study that was conducted in 2005-2006. This means that there will probably be a spike in the 1/50 ratio covering 2008 and beyond.

This is a serious problem that will only be getting worse. As the economy continues to show no real signs of getting better with a growing segment of unemployed, matched with the increasingly high number of home foreclosures, the homeless population will only get larger and larger.

When children are homeless, the likelihood that they will fall behind or completely drop out of school is very high. This may also contribute to the growing number of homeless in future.

I wish that I had a solution to suggest, but I'm fresh out. Anyone?

one solution could be eugenics, another could be helping your neighbours.

The so called 'Socialism' that is in place in the majority of the rest of the western world stops most of these things from happening. Maybe more social policies would help.

But then Im just a big "Socialist" so what would I know

The other thing you need to consider with this report is that they only count "families" with homeless children. The numbers would be closer to 10 in 50 due to the kids that have run away from abuse or been thrown out.

With all the recent home foreclosures this really shouldn't surprise anyone. Time to move back in with mom/dad/grandpa/grandma/rich uncle/church etc.
