Israeli Prime Minister, Ariel Sharon plans to continue the hunt for any individuals described as a "leader of Hamas" while also continuing to withdraw from some Palestinian areas. Sharon thanked the Israeli army today for a "successful" operation to assassinate the most recent Hamas leader, Rantisi.

Mr. Sharon said the Israeli policy of trying to advance the political process while at the same time hitting out at terrorist leaders would continue. He is hoping to build up support for his plan to withdraw from the Gaza Strip and parts of the West Bank before a referendum of his ruling Likud Party next month. Mahmoud Zamar is the possible and suggested new leader of Hamas. He was the second in command to Rantisi. However Zamar has already been the target of an assassination attempt by Israel, he survived but was injured and his son and bodyguard was killed. Zamar could be either too much of an obvious target and fears for his life and is not the new leader, or the last attempt on his life strengthened his resolve against Israel? I don't know if Hamas has too many options, but these assassinations opens the doors for younger more radical leaders to step in.
