Barack Obama 'too tired' to give proper welcome to Gordon Brown

Telegraph.co.uk

Barack Obama's offhand approach to Gordon Brown's Washington visit last week came about because the president was facing exhaustion over America's economic crisis and is unable to focus on foreign affairs, the Sunday Telegraph has been told.

Sources close to the White House say Mr Obama and his staff have been "overwhelmed" by the economic meltdown and have voiced concerns that the new president is not getting enough rest.

British officials, meanwhile, admit that the White House and US State Department staff were utterly bemused by complaints that the Prime Minister should have been granted full-blown press conference and a formal dinner, as has been customary. They concede that Obama aides seemed unfamiliar with the expectations that surround a major visit by a British prime minister.

But Washington figures with access to Mr Obama's inner circle explained the slight by saying that those high up in the administration have had little time to deal with international matters, let alone the diplomatic niceties of the special relationship.

Allies of Mr Obama say his weary appearance in the Oval Office with Mr Brown illustrates the strain he is now under, and the president's surprise at the sheer volume of business that crosses his desk.

And this is how the world sees our new president. Not able to handle all the duties of his job. Yes, I know, you'll say he's only been in office 50 days (not sure of the real number), but seriously, the least he could do is fake it. It IS a major part of his J.O.B. And as far as the Wal-Mart DVD set gift, I do think we could do a little better than that.

I understand that he might not have had the time for this. But he could have atleast pretended to care. Giving DVDs to the Prime Minister is very distastefule. I can see why they would take it as a slap in the face.

Im utterly embarrassed that they gave DVD's as a gift. I'm surprised he didnt give them a 12 pack of beer, or maybe a weed wacker, it's just as redneck a gift!

The real views of many in Obama administration were laid bare by a State Department official involved in planning the Brown visit, who reacted with fury when questioned by The Sunday Telegraph about why the event was so low-key.

The official dismissed any notion of the special relationship, saying: "There's nothing special about Britain. You're just the same as the other 190 countries in the world. You shouldn't expect special treatment." The apparent lack of attention to detail by the Obama administration is indicative of what many believe to be Mr Obama's determination to do too much too quickly.

And I think they're being too generous in making excuses. This type of rudeness should NOT happen anywhere, especially in the State Department of all places.

I think you guys need to lighten up a bit.

I think it's great that Obama didn't give those stupid Brits a warm welcome. They're pestering him while he's trying to deal with his OWN COUNTRY'S problems. They should leave him alone to think and stop pestering him! The 'gift' was probably Obama's way of hinting that they should hit the road!

Obama's own word.

“I think it is going to be part of the president’s job to be able to deal with more than one thing at once.’’

totalbuzz.freedomblogging.com...

How true How true.

Sooner or later he will have to focus on foreign affairs. Will be interesting to see how well he handle domestic issues when he does. Personally, under the current situation, I think many Presidents would find it difficult to do both.

He has both domestic and FOREIGN responsibilities. I admit that he has alot on his plate but giving DVDs as a gift is slapping an ally in the face. I would think that no matter how much of an Obama fan you might be you would be able to see that this was very low class.

But hey atleast he got a very nice and extremely thoughtful gift. A pen holder made from a ship that help end slavery. That is a very comendable gift.

That would be all good and well if he was actually handling the US's problems. So far all he has done is forget that he is POTUS and continued to campaign, and has spent a whole bunch of money. He has declared war on the profitable sectors of our country, and he thinks Health Care is one of the reasons we are in this mess, and wants to push forward with a Universal Health Care system that is unsustainable.

He is POTUS, it is his job to deal with foreign dignitaries, to discuss foreign policy. He has appointed the worst of the worst when it comes to policy.

If he can't handle being professional and maintain a stable demeanor and show respect to our allies, then he should resign.

What little credibility the US had after Bush has just been completely demolished in 47 days by Obama and squad.

First, he sends the bust of Winston Churchill back to the UK even after they insisted that he continue to hold on to it, and gives Brown DVD's. Brilliant.

There is a certain level of professional that should be maintained at all times and he has failed at that so far.

I actually respect Obama more because of how he acted. Gordon Brown is a NWO windbag, so personally, if I was president, I'd let him sleep on the street in a tent if he came to visit.

Personally I'm glad. He's the president, not an entertainer and not a host. He's the leader of a nation and if he's too busy taking care of the country he leads to display 'proper etiquette' to a visiting head of state, that person should be completely nonplussed and understanding. As should the rest of the world. All that formality is garbage and an even bigger waste of money than is already occurring. I say let him do his job.

If Gordon Brown wants something nice, he can wait until Christmas.

I guess it really depends on which titles of films he gave to compile a list of true faux pas:

1776
The Patriot
Braveheart
Patriot Games
V for Vendetta
A Clockwork Orange
Dr. Strangelove
Biodome (well any Paulie Shore movie actually)

Of course had PM Brown gave a copy of Planet of the Apes (1968) WW3 would have broke out right then and there.

What exactly do you think the president's job is? The president above all is the FIGUREHEAD of the country. He's supposed to HIRE people can handle things for him. It's called Management 101. Yes, he makes the final decisions, but he should be educated enough in the issues that it shouldn't take that long for him to be able to understand the issues. He is totally inept at economics (he's admitted that he doesn't understand them, the inept comment is mine).

As far as people rushing him to make decisions, he should just tell them NO, I'm not making a decision until I feel ready. That's what he gets for hiring Rahm Emmanuel.

That's what WE get for hiring an inexperienced president.

I posted the DVD list in another thread. What a joke. As I said there, isn't Brown legally blind? The guy probably couldn't even be able to enjoy the DVDs if he wanted to get his movie on.

Stay classy, Obama!

I don't care that our President did not have time to schmooze with a foreign leader. Well, let's get the lynch mob ready folks. Our president was actually exhausted from performing his elected duties to his COUNTRY to meet with and schmooze with and waste time with some foreign leader. America comes first, good for Obama.

Lest we forget, during Bush's entire eight years, three+ were spent ON VACATION.

www.cbsnews.com...

Thats right, three YEARS plus of our former President's time was spent on vacation at David and Crawford. It is apparently a record, yeehaw, W!

There is nothing wrong with a work ethic. I would rather have a president who works than vacations to the ranch.

Ok, my $0.02 worth (wonder if that's going to be taxed? :lol

Obama is "exhausted" dealing with the Economic Situation. This means that he's workin his buttocks off. Something we should give him a break for. So should the PM.

The DVD gift, admittedly, was a bit tacky. His "people" should have been able to do much better than that. I'm sure that the visit was known about well in advance and that should have been enough time for SOMEONE to find something a bit nicer.

As far as a "full blown press conference and a formal dinner". .. Press conference, maybe ... something else one of his "people" could have arranged. Formal Dinner ... no way ... those things are EXPENSIVE and to expect a leader of a country who is facing economic disaster to spend thousands of dollars on a formal dinner (probably tens of thousands) is selfish and pompous.

And no matter how tired you are, at least feign interest. It doesn't have to be enthusastic interest but at least LOOK like you're interested. That doesn't take much energy.

Mr. Obama is the first black President. I sure hope people don't bring up the terrible stereotype of black people being lazy. That would be horrendously wrong. But could you imagine if John McCain would have been elected? People would be talking non stop about if he was too old. Another stereotype....But that wouldn't stop them.

I understand Mr. Obama is racing the clock, he understands he only has 2 years to inact all of his liberal socialist policies. Because in 2010 he will basically be a lame-duck President.

Mr. Obama is shrugging off foriegn policy duties because his real goal is destroying the US economy so he can inact his social policies.
