Gamma-ray bursts are the most luminous electromagnetic events occurring in the universe since the Big Bang. They are flashes of gamma rays emanating from seemingly random places in deep space at random times. The duration of a gamma-ray burst is typically a few seconds, but can range from a few milliseconds to several minutes, and the initial burst is usually followed by a longer-lived "afterglow" emitting at longer wavelengths (X-ray, ultraviolet, optical, infrared, and radio). Gamma-ray bursts are detected by orbiting satellites about two to three times per week. According to scientists the gamma ray burst are too far away to reach us but what if possibly a wandering one ended up in our orbit and that is how we meet our end? hopefully science could detect this and do something about it.

I think the CERN blackhole machine will have a better chance. But, it is thought that a large enough burst could sterilize an entire galaxy.

Unfortunately, by the time detection takes place, the damage is as good as done. Even if it's very far away, if Earth is unlucky enough to be in the direct path of a gamma ray burst, we're done, lights out.
