Small earthquake in victoria!!!

Approximately 10 minutes ago i was sitting on the couch watching tv.

It is currently 9:09 PM GMT + 10 and there was just this small rattle and the whole house shook, now i live in australia which doesnt have earthquakes because it has its own tectonic plate. Soone after that little event i went outside and tried to call soemone and the phones werent working (landline and mobile)...

this is very strange for this area and everybody here is very freaked out..

What is your take on this??

EDIT1: there is now a news report on it found at www.news.com.au...

and there are theories already coming in of it being a big quake near New Zealand...

If people felt it over 50 km away what could that mean???

Yep, it was a 5.1.

Here's the map from the USGS. This happened well before what you felt.

the quake has now shown up on some sites as to being 4.7 and about 60 kilometers east of phillip island...

the sun also states that the epicentre was 7 kilometers west of Korumburra

That's around where the last small one I remember came from in 01-02.
That is all swamp land out there.
I wonder whats underneath it?
