Venezuela's Hugo Chavez tightens state control of food amid rocketing inflation and food shortages

www.telegraph.co.uk

President Hugo Chavez is tightening state control over Venezuela's food supply, setting quotas for food staples which are to be sold at government-imposed prices.

Chavez is seeking to ensure that his core support, the poor, can still fill their shopping baskets with food.

Production quotas and prices have now been set for cooking oil, white rice, sugar, coffee, flour, margarine, pasta, cheeses and tomato sauce.

Slowly but steadily, Chavez is grinding up private industry and creating state-run enterprises as he attempts to stop runaway inflation and ensure continued support from his glargest constituency.

Does this steady move to collectivism/socialism sound familiar? Aren't we seeing stirrings of the same mindset in the Obama administration?

Most recently, Chavez has seized control of rice mills to control prices of the country's largest food resource.

Do you think this isn't going to come here?

We have the US equivalent of Chavez as PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES.

Price controls are coming..along with inflation....

People don't think we can become a third world country....think again...it can happen and it most likely will.

Not to mention many of our rights are going to be stripped away.

One has to wonder what our veterans of WW1 and WW2 would think of the attitudes in this country. They fought against the very thing we are becoming.

Isn't it starting already? Dictating pay scales to business, owning 80% of an ins. co. and insuring 100% of its obligations, buying out banks and auto mfrs.?

Looks like it to me.

Govt. will account for over 40% of GDP this year. That is socialism, plain and simple.
