...something I posted on another site...

HOURGLASS

Some see it as a countdown clock
Some see it as their fate
Some see it as an urge to live
And others a reason to wait

In spite of the view that each may have
Few can fault the fact
That the sands shall swirl and they shall fall
And none may turn them back

The winds and waters of external world
Can erode each mountain tall
But try as it might this glass respite
Serves as safe shelter for one and all

Sits safe within, each grain of sand
Yet safety is not its role
It logs the length of the life of Man
And for each it slowly tolls

We notice not the initial flow
Our reserve appears unmoved
We care not the pace the pile may grow
For there’s so much more to use

It’s not until the lower glass
Is more burdened than the top
That we finally find the flows too fast
And no power or payment may stop

Some cry some curse some promise all
In an effort to stem the tide
Yet this solid glass maiden refuses to stall
Unmoved is her moving inside

She is the mother of moments contained
Female form that filters time
Each grain can claim my instants retained
Every cherished memory of mine

Once deed is done or victory won
Or lost as the case may be
It separates from inverted cone
Adds itself to a pyramid of me

As the last grain falls
And my second hand calls
When it appears that life’s at an end
I have utmost faith that I'll draw new breath
...flip it over...

...and start again.

Do not star, cuz it don't count, eh?

Some musings on Time from the masters:

-----------------------

Deeper and deeper into Time's endless tunnel, does the night-hawk, wend her wild way; and finds eternities before and behind; and her last limit is her everlasting beginning.

Herman Melville

-----------------------

What if, some day or night a demon were to steal after you into your loneliest loneliness and say to you: "This life as you now live it and have lived it, you will have to live once more and innumerable times more; and there will be nothing new in it, but every pain and every joy and every thought and sigh and everything unutterably small or great in your life will have to return to you, all in the same succession and sequence-- even this spider and this moonlight between the trees, and even this moment and I myself. The eternal hourglass of existence is turned upside down again and again, and you with it, a speck of dust!"

Friedrich Nietzsche

-----------------------

We live in deeds, not years; in thoughts, not breaths;
In feelings, not in figures on a dial.
We should count time by heart-throbs.

Philip James Bailey

Simple living, simple fun
Eternal seemed the summer sun
Vacations with my mom and dad
Ever so much fun we had
No microwaves or tv cable
Toughskins, Garanimals were the labels
Innocence, and loves first kiss
Easier times, yes they did exist
Summer, Parents, Innocence ENDED

Love it. Really.

Star for you. (I think it must be my nerd talking. The memory metaphor was brilliant though).

For Jody

As I look in your eyes thoughts I can’t help
You know, In the old kitchen… where we first met

As he introduced us, we looked and gasped
Embarrassed to say, we just laughed.

Silence was golden, to bad you were with him
All I could say, was ‘hello’ and grin

Time stood still as our breaths did to
But just to stare and admire you

Years did pass as they always do
However far, you were always near

On your doorstep, a few years ago
A tear came to my eye as I saw you glow

Years wisped by in our chat
As we talked about nothing cept for your cat

Five years ago my dream came true
I’d marry again, with no one but you

My most precious memories through the years
Are those of you, together here.

"Mommy, carry me"
Arms stretched in the air
She looks down and lifts me up
I play with her blonde hair

"Watch me Mommy,
Look what I'm making!"
Feeding mud-pies to Daddy
His heart is breaking

"These are the best days,
of your Life," he said
Teddy-bears surround me
Tucked into bed

"Teach me to tell time, Daddy
I really want to know."
"Slavery to time will come little girl
The answer, is No."

Crammed around the Fire
'Sweet Home Alabama' in the air
Guitars playing sweetly
The whole family was there

"Have the car back by ten
and here's some cash to fill it too"
I put that Jetta in the ditch that night
I never thought they knew

"You know, you used to stick
raisins up your nose..."
She says to me in the dressing room
While we are trying on clothes

Clothes that we will wear
On my Graduation Day
It'll be the last time we're all together
Before Grandpa parted ways

And I'll let Mom tell my fellow grads
Her very favorite story
Of how she would take me everywhere
And I begged "Mommy, Carry Me."

For the Workers in the Field

As I stood there watching you turn blue
Before the words of our prayer barely left our lips
Your first inhale! at God’s first kiss!

Sirens Sirens all about~! With more than 4 engines that came about
Carry with them gadgets and stuff
Along with the paramedics who came in loads by the trucks!
Angles they were, upon a prayer, that whispered a word of ‘hang on! we’re here!”
How did they all get there, before I hung up?

Watching them go over very inch of your tiny body
One look at me and said ‘how’s Daddy?”
I broke down and wept and gave all 15 a really big hug
Knowing all the words of thankfulness would never be enuf

Watching you grow through the last 18 years
I keep coming back this that day that I wept rivers of tears

Of

Joy!

What does it take to get me through
The long hard days I am without you
I think of your eyes and your beautiful smile
And know I will be with you in a little while

I’d write you a letter you will not see
And wonder if you are thinking of me
I start to drift into a day dream
Of you and I sitting by a cool stream

I look at the clock, It won’t be long now
I will be there soon and this is my vow
And we will be together
From now til forever

Thanks to masqua for the inspiration for my second entry.

Innocent child in sunlight bathed
Wind combed hair, skin unscathed
Walks discrete with steps of thunder
Eyes that drink of love and wonder

Plump, pink fingers reach to take
Dreams to eat, sweet like cake
And sticky hands hold butterflies
Excitement laughs but also dies

Cry not now, oh little one
For gentle life is gently gone
So this way we all must pass
And part for you like supple grass

This one's just for fun...my ode to all of the beloved dogs who have chosen to share life with me - and to one in particular who would definitely stand up to the Creative Force and demand a rearrangement of life spans, he loved his life so much!

Thanks for setting up the contest, the poems here are marvelous! Great minds, great thoughts!

JED AND THE PEARLY GATES

When I get to Heaven, gonna state my Case,
Some of these Humans got too much Grace.
Take it from the Sinners who wrecked the Place,
Give what we save to the Dog.

No Reason to think God don't know,
Just what it takes to make a Blue Ball glow.
When Astros talk about a new Black Hole,
I'm sure Man's at the Center of the Cog.

Now, Dog ain't Nothing but Furry Love,
God and Dog fit like a Glove.
Sirius' Jester from the Stars Above,
To guide us out of the Fog.

Well, Dog's been with us since Early Days,
Help us with our Surly Ways.
Faithful Partner in the Ancient Maze,
Shake the Tree of Life like a Log.

And, Dog don't profit from Global War.
Pretty much leaves Nature like it was before.
Knows Love's the only Thing worth fighting for...
Give Long Life to the Dog!

Took some text from a different thread and ran it though bot.robopoem.com... and produced:

In a mass'awakening buckeye
That we have been in nice ally
Along as a country a world glide
Individual slop beside
It a great thing to attitude
The truth outrage exactitude
Situation claiming that iced
Something new or scrap defaced

Nice eh?

Reminiscence

Don't make me remember
the benders
and Fenders
bead-eyed lenders
and liars
and hire
sick and mired
Richard Pryor
Let it go
look above, there's
a man
from a clan
in the stars
No more scars
on the auras
and souls ...

*

No more jury's
and fury
Missouri
Mercuri
Madame Curie,-
Don't romanticise
a century
of miser-penitentiarys
Let it go
Cos we don't longer owe
nothing to no one
It comes softly,
Got my memories
I have kissed in a blossom tree at night in Czech cities.
Who cares?
Look forward in time
To the:
Nano-tech
Bell-decked
Space-port Lower deck
Rid of
Rock dove
maglev-boats
floating, rotote,
sleep late
Soul-mate,
Kuwait > > >
This nostalgia is giving me
Herpes and neuralgia
.
Here comes the last great
world-awakening
synapses flare
Water-earth-fire-air
and you tell me,
I should care,
bout the past
I'm aghast

Damn the days used to roll by. The sun beating down. East coast breeze, sea salt scented air. Too many reasons to feel good. Before the graphs showed negative stretches, roads boundless in every direction. Make your way and i'll make mine. When times got tough, made ends meet, they flew right by. All in the past, you should know, nothing but a memory can pull that warm Feeling back to the center of your soul. Hoping these times won't last I pour a glass, sit back, relax. Reminisce about the times Where music never got old. Everything had meaning, so much to hold. Our jobs sucked but we still knew We'd come home to good family, good food, and good news. The intertubes were much too slow to sit at home and let time go. Unless it was a crappy day, we'd be outside with no delay

Everyday I peeled my mind trying to find a way to make it shine.
I searched every grimacing corner of my thoughts to find my inner self.
All along I was told what to believe and how to think.
Nevertheless I raced past those idiotic standings on how to grow.

My own reflection still showed traces of others influences
I refused to let someone bear fruit from the tree that I had planted.
Stepping through the other side of my mind, I realized what freedom is.
No longer caring what every soul thought of my own personality.
I created my own demons and I said to myself, I will erase them just as well.

Temptation overturned you again, what could you do but sin?
You were never in it to set yourself free, you just wanted to flee.
As I retrace the steps to your own end, I know your wanting time to bend.
Binding you like a child, could you even lift your own arm?
You prayed so long, but the devil was on your shoulder listening.
And all you could do was set around dissing everyone who tried to mend your wounds. Did you think it would be that easy?
When it's all just another page in the book, please write me again and let me know how it began.

In his old yellow pickup truck
held together by a little wire and a lot of luck
my grandfather used to ride
me proudly perched alongside
after fishing the Sinyati.
Jim Reeves
was playing
music, rattles, were somehow soothing
as the dusty single track
seemed to faithfully guide us back.
The old man's voice had a special way
And I can remember to this day
his eyes shining, the palest blue
telling stories I still believe to be true
ghosts, fish, all manner of strange sights
and once, just once, he spoke of the Lights.

the winds of new buffet so
the concept of love.
