Chavez threatens to expropriate Venezuelan rice processors

www.cbc.ca

Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez ordered troops to take control of the country's rice processing businesses Saturday, saying some have balked at producing under regulated prices.

"This government is here to protect the people, not the bourgeoisie or the rich," Chavez said, ordering military authorities to "take control of and intervene in all of these businesses that process rice in Venezuela."

Chavez said some companies had threatened to paralyze production, but any rice processing plants that did so would be expropriated.

"I don't have any problem expropriating," he said. "And I'll pay them with paper, too. Don't think I'll pay them with hard cash."

He is using the military to take over and occupy Venezuela's largest food and rice producers.

He is also going to take over a plant in Portuguesa state. He says "It is violating the laws and rules of the nation."

He is going after these suppliers he has accused of hoarding food, to sell later at inflated prices.

Amazing, I will be watching for new developments, and see what he really does with his control over oil, elctricity, and food.

Funny, how long it takes for socialism to turn into communism.

I don't see there being election for them in 2012, by that time he will have already rolled out the death squads and declared himself dictator.

I feel sorry for those people down in Venezuela, I know two people that are from there, I don't talk to them anymore, but those people have no future.

The country will be bankrupt before too long, and everyone will be in misery.

Price Controls

Chavez, a former Army officer, has imposed controls on staples such as rice, pasta, cooking oil and milk in a bid to control inflation fueled by government spending on social programs for the poor. Consumer prices rose 32 percent last year, the most among 78 economies tracked by Bloomberg. Food prices jumped 47 percent.

Yep, very clear that is price control strategy is working.

Food prices have risen almost 50% in one year.

Chavez is a joke and only cares about himself. By catering to the poor he is trying to stay in power longer.

Control the food to control the people.

Chavez is setting himself up as dictator for life just like his friend Castro did.

Then you will see ship full of rice and other crops going to Russia and Russian weapons coming back in return.

If he does buy weapons from Russia, Russia will shake the hands of the U.S. policymakers for making Chavez feel as though he needed to arm his country.

It's Good cop Bad cop on a global scale.
