Kids.. no, people these days. It's so sad. When I was growing up and going to school, I was on wellfare, when I got my lunch card, noone cared that I got one, all they cared about was if I was going to play after I ate my lunch. Kids back then didn't care if you were on wellfare or not, it was a more innocent time, when they cared if you could kick the ball or run fast so they can have fun with you.

Now kids make fun of eachother for being poor? Now parents think its unjust to have their kids eating cheese sandwhiches unheated? What is the world coming to? I ate sandwhiches filled with rice because we couldn't even afford cheese.

No, I don't feel sorry for those kids.
I'm a diabetic and cheese, fruit and milk are a luxury for me.
They are being fed nutritious food.

What happened to handling your business in this country? Jesus, when I was a kid, I ate hot dog casserole and rice pudding 3 days out of the week. PB and J the rest. Was it glamorous? No. Was it good? Sometimes. Did it harm me? NOT IN THE LEAST. My mom was a single parent when I grew up in the 80's. Oklahoma was ROUGH back then...really bad economy. She worked two and three jobs to feed my brother and me. It's crap that she had to do that, but damn it she did.

She finally found and married a great man, who I am happy to call dad, and things were a lot better. I remember my first pair of Air Jordans, and my first Nintendo. Even though dad bought me all these things, I never got spoiled, because I knew what it was like to not have them.

I buy myself and my parents nice things now, because I like them, and I appreciate them. I buy a good pair of shoes, and keep them clean and wear them for years. I bought a 30,000 dollar z71, and that truck is in immaculate shape. I appreciate what it's like to drive a beater, so I take care of my nice vehicle.

I guess I kind of went off on a tangent here, but it bugs the hell out of me to hear people talking about "feelings", and "save the children" when what kids really need most is a good dose of reality. You wont protect them from it forever, and it's detrimental to their growth if you do.

If they are irritated that they have to eat cold cheese sandwiches, then I have a good solution.

Maybe it has been said, to many to go through.

Solution- Grill the damn things. There you go. It is hot and kids love grilled cheese sandwiches. I used to love grilled cheese sandwich day at school.

Yeah Im not sure what exactly the issue is here

1) The kids are getting fed no? Its not like they have been cut off eh?
2) Because some parents cannot pay for the lunches should all the kids suffer the same fate?

Shhesh. some of the rhetoric here makes it seem like the kids were denied an education or something.

Don't LET your kids eat the school lunches anyway

A: The lunch Lady is very likely to have Cooties which allow for the passing of Lunch Lady genetics via Viral Transfer

B: There is probably consumable RFID tags in the Cheese anyway

C:

(and this one is serious)

If you want to give your kids a nutritional EDGE, you pack their Lunch and shop Organic and spend big bucks, because i don't know about Rfid lol, but your supermarket stuff has either pesticides or genetic mods Or it's packaged in either Aluminum or Estrogen and other Chemical leaking Plastics that leech into the food

These parents cant afford school lunches and you want them to waste money on organic food?

How do you package foods in a female hormone (estrogen)?

You are better off telling them to buy seeds and growing their own vegetables and sending those with their kids for lunch.

I'm not really sure what the matter is here. I mean i had packed lunches and it usually included something along these lines and it never did me any harm. In fact this meal sounds pretty good, cheese sandwich, fruit and some milk. Not bad at all.

I wouldn't suggest the kids eat seeds...but maybe grow the plants out and give them the vegetables and fruit off of said plants

I don't know if this has been said, but I'm from Australia and we never get free lunch. You either bring it from home, buy it, or don't get fed. We don't have cafeterias or lunch halls, you eat out in the open.

I'd love to have the option to eat what they're getting for free no hassles

If people put nutrition before other desires there wouldn't be a depression right now and they would be able to afford the good food.

There are a great many choices that can be made that allow for food being a priority over other things in life and Eat LESS and eat Better evens out quite nicely.

School lunches Exist because many kids are in danger of poor nutrition, can't wont or whatever... a kid should be fed at school

and really there is no excuse but self for any one unless truely broke and unemployed entirely can't alter diet

I wont go into it... too much I'll say simply if Trans fat clogs the Large Arteries in your Heart, what do you suppose it does to the tiny capillaries in your brain?

How many different kinds of prions are floating around in processed meats?

Bad Nutrition = STUPID

A chance to force a half a vitamin into a kid is a good thing these kids need to be given Double lunches before they are as stupid as their parents

If you can THINK well

and your Healthy

Money will never be an issue

Just to state once again, I dont have a real problem with what they are being given to eat. In fact they are probably very lucky to get it considering how things are these days.

My point was the stigma that would be attached by bringing a kid to task in front of everyone for not having money to pay for a regular lunch, and as such being mandated to the "loser lunch" of government grade cheese sandwiches and public humiliation.

There were many times in my life when I would have fought somebody for a cheese sandwich and a piece of fruit. And yes kids these days are spoiled candy asses. I just dont like seeing poor kids get embarrassed or called out because their parents happen to be dirt bags.

If it's being made a point of, like the teacher picks up a loud speaker and announces it or frog marches the kids to a poor table then yes i'd agree. However i would state that kids are wrapped in cotton wool more than ever these days. Imagine what will happen when these kids grow up and start experiencing some knocks in life, will they end up massively depressed?

Whilst it's not nice they're having to eat the poor peoples food as some seem to consider this, it will hopefully just strength their character. Maybe it will even inspire them to not be like their parents and to make something more of their lives.

Although not all parents are dirt bags as you put it. Just because they're poor does not mean they're bad, it does not mean they didn't try and it does not mean they love their kids less.

EDIT

I agree though that i wish being poor wasn't an issue with people, however other kids are going to be cruel about it. It's not nice, it's not good but it is a part of life. Either the kids will grow a nice, healthy thick skin and get on with things or they will buckle. I hate to say that is part of life as it's so utterly callous, but it is the truth.

Hmm i would debate this thinking. There are many well educated , smart people who want to work that are currently unemployed. Unless you are thinking of criminal action, as there is always money to be made in crime. I doubt that is what you meant though.

Ya, don't get me wrong here. We had to pay or just
not eat. Simple. (BTW No one was fat, cept 1 kid, kinda)!
Or we could always brown bag it.(roadkill)
I was thinking like others, just heat it up and turn it
into grilled cheese and then everyones happy! Solved!
One of my favorites!

No wait, better not, the mom might sue if the kid gets burned!

The point I am making is we dont balk at giving the
(already rich) bankers a half a bjillion dollars but we
cut millions of funding for our schools? WTF?
THATS what gets me!

Cheese, fruit and milk sounds yummy to me.

I work all day in a meat processing plant, and all I eat every day is a banana, sandwiches and some juice. I mean.. this is all nutritious food, what do you expect to feed your children for lunches? Junk food? If so, it's little wonder so many Americans are obese and so accurately-portrayed in the film Wall.E. It's disturbing to see this posted as a thread, what's gonna happen when the meltdown truly arrives and ordinary folk will struggle to feed their families.. as Evelyn Rothschild warned us on CNBC .. www.youtube.com...

I really can understand both sides of this argument.

To the orginal poster, and your responses:

You are correct with how students act.. they can be ruthless about nearly anything. Rich kids, poor kids.. all the same, they can say some really mean things. We are all products of our environment, and in some ways.. we all have that in us. When we get older, we learn to tame it down, or even arrest it, but it's still there. I didn't grow up in a poor home, but my family isn't rich by any means. I not only remember others being picked on.. I'm man enough to remember at some points doing the picking.. I too hate it that these kids have to go through this.. and I feel bad for them reguardless of weather or not their parents are deadbeats or just down on their luck, either way it's not the kids fault.

Now, for my argument against your post.. along the same lines as everyone else..

They are still a lot better off than kids in a lot of other countries. I think we can all admit that. Arguments like this are based around our welfare and social systems.. they breed people that believe that others should foot the bill. Some would say.. 'Jesus was a socialist'.. I would say he was a Libertarian or complete anarchist if anything. Sure, he believed, and based his teachings on loving and helping others, but not on forcing others to. You can't force people to be kind..

If you feel bad about people in your community being down and out, give them some money.. buy them some food.. pay their light bill if you feel those actions are warrented.. hell, do it if you think that it isn't warrented, but just want to be kind.. but move from the mentality that it is our responsibility to be kind, it's not. I think I should help others at certain points.. when I can, but I don't expect everyone to feel the same way.

Freedom for everyone comes from hard work, not handouts.

Reguardless.. good thread for discussion. Flagged just for that.

Here in Holland it is very normal for kids to bring their own sandwiches from home to school for lunch. Sandwiches, fruit and milk does not sound like a unhealthy meal. I think its better then some of the school junkfood they serve.

Ditto in the Uk dude.
My boy eats cheese sarnies almost every day, he's like a bloody taffy mouse, and cheese sarnies are cold how the hell does an individual keep a sandwich hot till lunchtime I wonder?.

Interestingly enough, mys son came home from school 2 days ago say some eco typoe visitor to the school had been peeking at what the kids were having for lunch.

My son had 4 cheese sarnies some melon chunks a nutrigrain bar and some 50% fruit squash with sugar (aspartame is a no no) .

Now get this people,- Mr Dick Head Eco type guy, informed my child that although his lunch was ok, it seemed to lack protein.

So Mr Dick Head Eco type Guy, recommended to my 11 year old that perhaps he could have a pack of, wait for it

here it comes ---

"POTATO CHIPS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"

What in the name of christ is a dick head spotty hippy doing, telling my kid to eat crap that would probably kill him in years to come?

Needless to say my son has been given strict instructions that, should anyone stick their nose in his lunch he is to tell them to pay a visit to dad.

Back on topic, all children should have a decent meal once a day (imho) be it at home or at school.
The most vulnrable kids will probably not get a decent meal at home following school. At the very least we could make a meal available at school if they choose to have it, let's not deny the kids because of their parents situation whatever that is.

If the school is strapped for cash then this should be addressed with urgency, if kids can't rely on their own parents what harm would it do for them to at least be able to rely on someone elses ?

I would imagine that a few vegatables ,some fruit , bread and a slice of meat cost far less to buy than a stealth bomber, when the hell are we as a species going to get our priorities right ?

Kids are such whiners about food. We made grilled cheese sandwiches with exceptionally delicious aged cheddar once for some younger family members who wouldn't eat it because it wasn't electric orange plastic melted on gluey white bread.

To be honest, crappy quality of cheese not withstanding, those sandwhiches don't sound that bad. BUT I'd be the first person to argue that ALL school children deserve a free (i.e. taxpayer funded) *hot* lunch at school.

know a lot of teachers and lemme tell you, there is abject poverty in this country and a great many kids probably haven't been fed a single nutrient or vitamin in their life. Even indulged rich kids are probably not fed very nutritious food. And as old fashioned as it sounds - Proper nutrition is the cornerstone of a healthy body AND mind. Take our sugar-addiction for instance, if only people realized your child isn't learning disabled, her/his system is just overloaded with yeast from all the sugar you've been feeding her/him! Kids shouldn't be gulping down juice & pop. Just like they shouldn't be eating gluey slices of pizza every day.

Heck, even a bowl of gruel is probably more nutrient rich than half the stuff served in a school cafeteria. Utterly boring, yes, but better for you.
